Both sound awesome. I love Anthony’s videos, properly informative, played brilliantly, and not the usual irritating slap a thon that so many players do. All I’ve got to do now is move to the US so I can live near the shop! 😂
Anthony always makes them sound great. but my tastes like the tone of the '55 with the note articulation of the Pino which also has a more even volume across the strings and notes played. The important point is that these are solo'd demo's, so what you hear can be recorded but not reproduced (maintained tonally) within the live band setting which is the major requirement of all instruments sold. I'd have both. (Not pink though).
Your playing showcases the sounds so well! It’s amazing how many textures you can get out of a P Bass. Makes me think it’s more versatile than most basses. I had a Japanese 50’s P Bass and that single coil pickup was the most dynamic and powerful one I’ve heard (pick palm mute especially). Excellent comparison.
Loved Pino back in the day, but ever since he switched to his P, I can hardly make out what notes he's playing! He can play with his tone down, or with flats - whatever muddying thing he does; but you'd think the sound engineers could coax a bit more note definition out of his signal. I mean, Jamerson never changed his flats, but you could still hear his notes just fine.
This is true. He has adopted what I think of as an overly polite bass tone. Guys do their best work when they're young and want to be heard, and then get older and for some reason want to be so inoffensive you can't even hear what they're doing.
@@pCeLobster I don't know, I haven't noticed such a trend in other talented players, it's just Pino that has decided he now prefers a dull thud. There may be a connotation of 'Old School is More Authentic' (or something). But I'm someone who _adores_ a 1960s bass sound - and I never had trouble hearing bass pitch in playing from that era (their tone usually just had less lows & sub frequencies back then).
Hi. Love your reviews. Swap the necks - and the split coil bass with the maple neck will be just perfect. Gosh, Fender, access to truss rod! Hello, its 2024! What the ....? Light tuners ? Regardless of the stupidity in the Fender company, your videos are beautiful!
Wow! As a mainly Precision player, I’d always snubbed my nose at the older single coil “slab” models. But that really sounds great! Almost fatter and nasal at the same time. I may need to add one to my arsenal for that great vintage tone! I also like that it has a tummy cutaway
I have two (albeit much cheaper) P basses of both styles - Sire D5 (single coil) and P5 (split coil). For some reason, I can't get to like the D5 sound, it's too harsh for my taste, even after replacing the pickup twice to different brands, still couldn't get it to sound right to me. The P5 on the other hand, just seems to work perfectly with almost anything. I know there are people who think the opposite, and that's okay. The split coil just resonates with me a lot more that the single coil. It came into effect in this video too. Loved the Pino bass, although it did sound unusually brighter that a P bass pickup would (to my ears), and the 55 P bass, although beautiful, just doesn't click with me. The sound is too nasally, airy and aggressive to be "sitting" in a mix the way a split coil pickup would. Thanks for the video, Anthony! Loved the playing and the basses!
The pickup location on the 55 is a little closer to the neck than the split P and even the jazz just a tiny bit so another difference between the two I don’t think you mentioned unless I missed it.
I have a 55 precision , it's such another world against the split P , agressive high-mid and even with labella strings ! Love it !

Terrific video. I always love your playing. You bring basses down to earth without all of the acrobatics that so many videos have.

Absolutely loved this relaxed for kicks type review.... More of these pls. Pino slab is the grail... Heck yeah
always look forward to Anthony’s bass vids! 🎸
That 55 p-bass is probably one of the nicest basses I've ever seen.
Excellent thanks for Sharing Anthony

Great comparison video! Thank you!
Man I luv the 55 bass !!
Love these comparison videos. Would be cool to see a shootout of all the different mustang models

With the same strings, the 50s output would have been much higher.
Great video. They look like Fender flats on the 55 from the green silks

55 P sounds like a Jazz Bass with the neck pickup soloed. In a good way.

Ive noticed gibson nitro is really thin, fender nitro is really thick...and smells different
