    Sorry to correct your Blueberry Video but the most important aspect of growing Blueberries is the PH of your soil. The Kellogg product that you used for your soil has a PH of 6.0-7.5. Blueberries have to have a PH of 4.5-5.5 in order to grow well and to produce fruit. You should have added some Sulphur to your soil mix and mixed 50% Spagnum Peat Moss to the Kellogg potting mix. The soil Acidifier that you added is a fertilizer and it takes too long to break down. Lastly, you need to do a PH test of the water that you use to water your plants. You might have to correct the PH of your water by adding white vinegar to it.

      The best blueberry soil mix for containers for me is roughly, 30% ericaceous compost - 30% pine bark mulch - 40% peat moss, all mixed together, it makes a good airy organic compost with a PH of around 5 PH, then I water with rain water which is also around 5 PH. And I add (Elixir Gardens Bumper Crop Blueberry Special Fertiliser) 3-4 times a year, very good blueberry fert and very cheap for the amount you get... it has EVERYTHING blueberries need.

      I have 8 Blueberry bushes so I make a 5 gallon bucket of water. I add 8-10 ounces of white vinegar per 5 gallons of city water. Our city water has a ph of 7. I always measure the ph before I pour onto the plants. My blueberries really jumped this year. Looking forward to 2023 crop.

    I have been putting pine bark mulch at the bottom of my blueberry containers rather than stones for 20+ years, as it's slightly acidic, I also mix it in with my ericaceous soil and peat moss mix for the blueberries, my plants love it, never had any issues, pine bark makes good drainage and a good airy acidic soil mix.

      Yes, I ordered & received the pine bark mulch & will be mixing it in with the soil. So, after watching Charles' video I will be getting large wide containers & do what you do - put some pine bark at the bottom along with mixing it in & topping the soil. This will be a much better way to plant our Blueberries besides with the coming war we could actually grab up those planters & bring them inside so they won't get fall-out on them. So glad I saw this video before I planted the Blueberries in the garden. Win - Win. Thank you. Judi

    Charles, I really appreciate your videos and have learned a lot. I'd like to suggest that you reconsider your recommendation of adding gravel to the bottom of the pot to improve drainage. This is a long perpetuated myth and it actually makes drainage much worse causing the soil to retain water. Water doesn't transfer well from one medium to another. Check it out, there are lots of convincing articles on the internet about this. A better solution is to stick with adding the perlite to the potting mix (as you recommend).

    • @newcat8132
      @newcat8132 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Not true whatsoever. When they say transferring from one medium to another they are talking about two different growing mediums. Gravel is not considered a growing medium by most horticulturalist.

    • @ArtistCreek
      @ArtistCreek 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That makes no sense. Gravel is not the same as a growing medium. The gravel helps it drain. You don't want waterlogged roots.

    For those beginners who want to grow blueberries in buckets:
    01. Bucket 55l (15 gallon)
    02. Soil from a pine forest
    03. Mix the soil with pieces of sticks and pine bark
    04. Pine bark mulch
    Purchased soil is dead soil. No doubt.
    Purchased fertilizer is not as good as slowly decaying sticks with pine bark. They gradually give the blueberries nutrients. If you really want to take care of the blueberry, it is a good idea to let pieces of pine bark stand in water for several weeks. As soon as the water "rusts", it also has a low ph, then water them. If you have blueberries in black buckets, they will heat up a lot in the sun and the roots will suffer. Either use white buckets or simply paint the black ones white or wrap them in paper or aluminum foil. One last piece of advice: the more varieties of blueberries, the more fruit you will have.
    Failure is not possible with this procedure

      Hello Patti,
      I agree with you, that you should have better control of soil moisture in Las Vegas, than we do here in Los Angeles. When it rains here (especially during the cooler, winter months) the soil stays very damp weeks on end (due to the high clay content).... creating the continuous "wet feet (root)" issues that blueberries do not like. Keep me posted on your food forest expansion!!! Charles :-)

I have ten gallon pots already. I am so excited to plant my own blueberries. What was the name of the spray you put on the leaves? Also what is your favorite blueberry? I watched the video but don’t remember. I have three pots so I will get three different types unless you recommend one type. Thank you

    Charles, I am on my 3rd year of growing blueberries and did not know that growing them in pots is better. If I planted in the ground in April can in mid June dig them up and transplant them in pots without killing them.

      Hello Greg,
      I hear it over and over again, from so many professionals I work with... That of all fruits, blueberries do the best in pots.... primarily because the roots do not like being continuously wet, as would happen during the colder wet winter months. There is very little, to no risk of harm to your in-ground blueberries during the summer... but the highest risk of transplant shock than any other time of the year. Therefore, I would recommend that you do this (or any other transplanting that can wait) until early fall... around late September/ early October. Let me know if you have any other questions. Charles :-)

      Charles, Thank you for your kind reply. The only reason I am asking is because I am on my 3rd year of trying to grow blueberries but I understand the shock issue. After watching your video on well drained blueberries I believe my first 2 attempts I have probably watered them too much. The soil is good soil not clay that they are planted in. So what is your recommendation being that they are already in the ground since April just water them really good 1 time a week.

      Charles, Thank you for your kind reply. If I were to dig up my blueberries now in late June and put them in pots do I trim them back severely after potting them up. Just don't want to lose them for the 3rd year in a row.

    Hello mate do you have full sun in your garden for the berries because it looks very shady as you have some trees and high walls which makes it look just like my garden? I have pear and plum trees which only get 2 to 3 hours of direct sun below the tree branches so do you think I can grow sunshine blues in mostly shade sections if the soil pH and drainage is taken care of? i read that some low bush blueberries could be ideal for such locations also I researched on the web and found out that fabric pots are far more beneficial than all the others due to various reasons please check it out if you haven't already. Can you suggest any varieties I live in London and I can easily get sunshine blueberry plants in the UK and it's perfect in size for planting below the branches. I must say your video is really helpful it covers everything in great detail being a virgo myself and the way I am I sometimes think that I am too much on the detail, maybe because of being an engineer I don't know, it just made me happy seeing you going in detail with this highly educating video about blueberries, also made me think that some people just have the skills when it comes to detailing part and analysing of their work and most people think they do but they don't. I watched loads of blueberry videos recently yours is by far the best, I am trying to learn more as I am new to gardening and I really enjoy it so now I am on the mission to surprise my sons with their favourite fruit "Blueberries" :) The most challenging as I found out due to lack of direct sun because of the trees and being in the UK it's very rainy and green with so many birds, squirrels and other animals that keep on eating my seedlings and destroying my garden. Thank you ever so much for the help.

    Very helpful. I live in Oregon and have heavy clay. I'm on a hill and the water coming down totally saturates the clay all winter into squishy mud. This container idea may be the answer. I am planting 50 to 60 blueberries and I think it will be so much easier to prep the soil for containers than it will be in the ground. With the heavy mud we get is a bad idea to bury the container in ground?

      I would put the container on bricks or something like that, that way the water can drain.

    I have a sunshine blue in a sleeve from Dave Wilson nursery do you know if it’s okay to just plant it in a five gallon container . I also use Kellogg raisedbed soil do you think it work with my bare root strawberries ??

      @IVOrganic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello Tony,
      Sounds good! I would plant the strawberries near the perimeter with the hope that some of the strawberries would ripen off the edge of the container (as the free hanging strawberries typically ripen best, and remain naturally pest free better). Keep me posted on your blueberry & strawberry successes by later this spring/ early summer!!!
      Charles :-)

    I have one question. When you speak about self pollinating varieties, does this mean they set fruit without pollinators like insects and so on?

    • @MrCheche153
      @MrCheche153 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It means you don’t have to have another blueberry plant to pollinate it in order to get blueberries. However, you will get a better harvest if you have more than one plant.

    Hi- I live in Phoenix, AZ where the temperatures have been about 112º during the day and 90º at night. About a month ago I purchased two O'Neal blueberry bushes and read that they needed another variety to cross pollinate. So I purchased a Sunshine Blue and placed the pot between the O'Neals. I potted them all as you have suggested including the IV Organic spray. I have been grinding dried banana peels for fertilizer. I water every morning at 5ish. My husband has suggested that I water at night also, since it is soo hot here. I don't want to over water, but that does make sense. Now a couple of leafs have brown areas. Is that from too much water or too much sun? The plants are on the east side of our house and have full sun until about 1PM and then bright shade. Thank you very much for the video and hopefully for your answer about growing blueberries in Phoenix!

    Shoot! I've been over-watering my blueberries! I bought them and transplanted them in the ground this spring. They blossomed but did not fruit. Other than stop watering them, is there anything I should do to help their root systems? I am in zone 5.

    My blueberries grow fine in the ground. Better than in pots. The key is soil acidification and mulch.
    If you have blueberries and live in an area where black walnuts are harvested get those hulls and mulch your bushes generously. Walnut hulls are acidic and the bushes love them. You can tell when your berries are happy by the color of the leaves.

    Great videos, I need to review your video on air cutting. Have had moss and rooting hormone/cloning gel for 6 months now, but have been procrastinating going forward with hacking up my beautiful fig. It's dormant, no leaves, and green buds, is it ok to air cut/clone at this life cycle?

    • @IVOrganic
      @IVOrganic 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for the compliment Joe! :-) I am about 1-2 weeks away from cloning my fig by way of cuttings, and hope to share that demo (again) before the end of this month. I like propagating figs (among other plants that propagate well by cutting) once the last chance of frost has past your area, and the weather, night time lows begin to warm. The goal is to accomplish the cuttings within a week or two of the fig breaking its dormancy! Keep me posted on your cloning successes! Charles :-)
