Police are calling for speculation to end after online groups named “a man who has no connection to the attack," says Times northern correspondent Constance Kampfner.

They are bound by law, if they release his details too soon (prior to a judge or magistrate giving the OK), his legal team can use this against the police and crown prosecution, he may end up getting a lesser sentence as a result.

If we started to pick and choose when laws apply, such as those that prevent the identity of u18s from being named by officials, then that means we are all not equal in the eyes of the law.

This was a targeted attack because the location is a low traffic population area it was clearly known to have children most likely advertised and the killer took the taxi directly to the location he had intent to do what he was going to do.

Here's an idea; to prevent online speculation, come forward with the details. Be a bit more transparent.
The answer is to stop frimping around, get down to basics, charge him with that reality and you can go deeper from there. Right now, keeping the UK in ignorance just stokes fears, as what happened there could, as far as we know, happen anywhere. That is what's damaging.

The police need to be truthful in their response to genuine journalistic questions, instead of trying to obfuscate the ethnicity and or religion or nationality of the assailant. This immediately makes the public suspicious, when the perpetrator is white British there is no hesitation in naming the attacker and all their details. One way to stop the speculation would be to actually release more information. We know it was a male, aged 17 and he lived in a nearby town. Thats all the information released, so the public gets to "fill in the blanks" with whatever angle they want to push, such as his religion, race, ethnicity, motives and so on. The police need to either quit complaining or release more information to stop the speculation.
One other point: In the past, the police in the UK (and to an extent, here in the US), quickly releases information if the criminal is White but doesn't if the person is something else. This isn't fooling anyone and by not releasing the information, people automatically fill in the blanks with assumptions, which is what the police are now complaining about.
Apparently the public is supposed to just quiet down, stop talking about it and not be angry. We Americans are furious for you. We stand with you. Don't forget this event or the many that have led up to it. And don't forget the government and media response.

Social Media will always attract speculation it’s unfortunately our brave new techno world. While I agree that this is not helpful it’s also unhelpful when police instructed by their masters are ordered to keep quiet about the identity of perpetrators. Indiscriminate immigration will have consequences but politicians who have allowed this will desperately try to cover up their complicity.
