  • An auspicious visit on an auspicious day! Please join me for my closing video of 2019 as we visit the prehistoric moments of Stonehenge and Avebury! Avebury may not be as well known as Stonehenge, but it’s the largest megalithic stone circle in the world!!! Both sites are incredible, mysterious, and very different experiences though they are part of the same historic complex of stone circles and monuments. This was an unforgettable experience and the most amazing way to close out 2019 and welcome 2020 with open arms, an open mind and an open heart! Sending blessings and gratitude to you all for your support and I wish you all a happy New Year and New Decade! Thanks for watching, see you next year!! 🎉

    They must have stopped allowing visitors to drive up to Stonehenge after the Griswold's visit.

    'Hart' is an old word for a red deer stag. 'White Hart' pubs are often ancient, and they indicate support for King Richard II of England, who was deposed in 1399.
    'Creme brulee' is the French name for a dish that is actually English, I believe invented at Cambridge University.

    Jackie, when you first saw Stonehenge, did it seem real? My experience was, because I only seen photos, when I first saw it, it still was the photos in my mind. When I went in 1999 the Visitor Center was literally across the road. Happy New Year to you and Sam.

    I hate to be a nudge, but I am a stickler for details. So regarding the tenon at Stonehenge ... that's not the name of the stone. It is part of an ancient form of joinery called mortise and tenon. A mortise is a hole or dent and the tenon is a bump or peg that fits into the mortise. At Stonehenge, the tenon is the bump on top of the vertical standing stones and the mortise is a depression carved into the bottom of the top stones. The tenon fits into the mortise and holds the two stones together.

    • @SuperEnthused
      @SuperEnthused  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aaah ok thank you for that information, I appreciate it! I did read that they used some woodworking techniques to hold the stones together so I should have figured that out. Always appreciate learning so thank you!!

    Everyone knows you can't get near Stonehenge since the Griswalds visited. th-cam.com/video/Kzig43Dr2y0/w-d-xo.html. Jackie you're so bundled up an Sam hasn't even zipped up his jacket. If you like pasties visit northern Wisconsin or the U.P Lots of GB immigrants brought them here and they're very popular here.

    It's not all that it appears to be. Yes there was once a stone circle there but An entire trilithon fell down in 1797, and in 1900 one of the upright sarsens of the outer circle fell down, along with its lintel.A series of major restorations and excavations took place from 1919 to 1929, and another major programme between 1958 - 1964.
    There has been extensive work over recent years so that now Stonehenge sits within a restored landscape, which gives a sense of its original setting.

    We usually just zoom past Stonehenge while on the A303 heading from Surrey towards Devon & Cornwall. I went there a lot as a kid, when you could still walk right up to the stones, but not since they built the visitor centre. I was always a bit disappointed that the Egyptians built pyramids and we just hauled some rocks into circles. I love your enthusiasm about sheep, I think they’re cute too.

    THE most amazing thing to me apart from the obvious , the construction, how they transported the Stones especially the blue stones from Wales 4.5 thousand years ago ,is the Archology done abit away ,they found thousands of cattle bones ,modern science found they were from as far away as the Isle of Sky ,how did they drove the cattle so far ,no roads in them days .that's mind blowing.

    There is a saying that comparing stonehenge to avebury is like comparing a village church to a cathedral. The henge is actually the bank and ditch encircling the stones. A henge is not a defensive structure as the bank is on the outside of the ditch. The henge at avebury was constructed using only deer antler picks and wicker baskets and is mind boggling in its size. Also at avebury is the avenue (probably the stones you saw in the distance from the top of the bank), silbury hill (a massive man made hill at the other end of the avenue), west kennet longbarrow (the longest burial mound in europe, and you can go inside it!), windmill hill, the sanctuary and loads more. I once stayed nearby and spent 3 days exploring this one small area, so cool.

    Great vlog. I have spent a few nights sleeping in my car in a field almost next to the The Red Lion whilst helping with charitable events. As Sam lives in Wiltshire you need to go and see 'White Horse' hill. It is a carving some 2500-3000 years old. There is also a hilltop Iron Age fort. If you really like hiking then you need to walk 'The Ridgeway' from near Oxford to Avebury (where you were). It is considered Britain's oldest road, dating from prehistoric times when the track was used by traders and herders. Sam will know all about it as it runs across Wiltshire. There are many sites to see along the way. It is lovely to see a tourist who appreciates history and tries to picture in their mind what the sites once looked like! Well done.

    Some years ago we rented Church Cottage in Avebury. An amazing and humbling week exploring the village, the stones, circle and henges round about, including That Huge Stone One when you could still walk up to and over it. Sad that you now can't but vital as the sheer numbers of human visitors will destroy it just by being there. (See Monty Python animation of what happens in Constable's Haywain painting) Glad you enjoyed your visit to both despite the weather.

      Yes I was actually surprised how close you could get to the stones, I can definitely understand that they need to be protected! I would love to rent a cottage in Avebury and enjoy the area one day!

      @@SuperEnthused Not sure if church cottage is still hired out but the National Trust also had a house in the village then. That may still be available. Search online for cottages to let and NT properties to let. Not in Avebury, there are thousands of holiday properties to let all over Britain and if you fancy something unusual, try the Landmark Trust, though they are rescued old follies, etc, so very expensive, to generate income to rescue more. Happy hunting, Roj.

    Awesome. I live in the UK and didn't know Avebury existed! Wow. My first visit to Stonehenge, dad stopped the car at the side of the road, we strolled over, climbed all over the stones for photos and were the only ones there! Mind you, it was many years ago! Glad you are having fun x
