- Dentils are one of the most misused and abused moldings on a house. Most times they are placed in the wrong place and are so large they look like a modillion. Come get this molding explained and work through getting good moldings on your next job.

Brent very nice presentation. Don't forget the importance of laying out the dentil to achieve a full tooth or full gap at your inside and outside corners!
Great point. Thanks.
About 35 years ago I made my own dentil molding out of walnut similar to the "i" dentil but without the dot on a table saw. Just like how you described, but flipping every other notch. It was for some built-in walnut bookcases. I probably didn't have it placed right, but at least I didn't buy it. I always love your videos. Thanks again for sharing.
Good job! Thanks.
Thanks so much for your videos. they are so well done and informative. 👍👍
Glad you like them!
I have had to make dentals twice in the last 6 months, prior I’ve never dealt with them. One was to match an existing and the second was to achieve clients vision. Unfortunately, not one of them had a bed molding underneath them but I did do the 1-3 ratio. I used 5/4 stock, made a jig and used a router. Thank you for sharing, I’ll keep this in mind if I ever get to do them again.
Ok, nice. Thanks for sharing.
proportions are very important! it is key to something looking pleasant or not!
Agreed!!
Some people talk about a hierarchy of scale. Start with the scale of the building, then a wall , then a portion of a wall, then a window, then a portion of a window, etc. That's why looking at a "minimal' building messes with your head, it crushes a person's psyche..
Interesting. Thanks.
Kramer: "You're a rabid anti-dentite! Oh, it starts with a few jokes and some slurs: "Hey, denty!"
I was thinking more of the line of what's worse? The dentil office or the doctor office?
Hahaha. So funny. one of my favorites scenes.
haha
It really helped that you showed where the dentil goes! First look at the cheap one didn’t look bad or wrong to me. But after you pointed to where it’s supposed to be my mind re oriented and immediately I could identify that the “off the shelf” moulding is visually off.
Nice. Good to hear. Thx.
Now that I have learned what is wrong with the typical store-bought dentil trim, I can't "un-see" it, LOL! I have recently discovered your videos, and have been "geeking" out them-- thanks for sharing all this great information. The videos are so well done- you are a great teacher! I have a suggestion for another topic: Could you please do a video on how to use dentils and dentil blocks/modillions, in EXTERIOR trimwork, please? I personally would appreciate suggestions for adapting them for a modern day "colonials"? (I have heard them once referred to as "phony col-o-nees", LOL!) Where I live in Maryland, these modern -day brick "colonials" are everywhere (about as common as ranch homes are in Texas I think!) Could you make some suggestions for those of us with smaller colonials (and cooresponding smaller budgets) as well as for those who have larger homes and larger budgets to spend on trim? Thank you so much!
Great suggestions. Yes. I'll work on it.
Would love to see a video where you make dentil moldings.
Ok, thanks.
Do the other parts of the cornice become smaller with the addition of dentils or does the height of the cornice increase?
Height increases typically. Thanks
Brent, when you say 1/3 or 1/4, what proportion do you actually mean?
Gap between the teeth is three or four times wider than the tooth width?
Or what?
Thanks, the face of the tooth compared to the gap. So if the face of the tooth is 3/4 of an inch, the gap is 1/4 of an inch.
Which home style the dentil molding is appropriate . How about Eclectic house?
You have a lot of variety. You'll want to match it up with the crown and other moldings in the home. Good luck.
where are good places to get any quality molding?
Windsor One or Kuiken Lumber.
I wonder what percentage of the classical prescriptions appear correct to Brent because of the actual proportions and what is from studying rules and being annoyed when they vary. I often do the latter with food. I understand respecting the originals but I don’t see anything unbalanced about dentils with roughly equal positive and negative space. I respect the desire to preserve previous styles exactly as they were, but the styles the several styles that we are studying are bastardization of previous styles that then caught on.
Interesting question and idea. Thanks for the challenge. I'll try to find some good examples.
I work for a Moulding company out of Chicago it’s called Star Moulding and Trim Company hopefully we can provide your Moulding needs..
Thx.
Any of the "finger joint" or "box joint" jigs could be adapted to make dentils!
Interesting. Thanks.
golden ratio is 1:1.618
Thanks.
They’re beautiful...but never do I want to paint them! So no.
Ok. Thanks.
Put more images of the examples and less of you talking to the camera.
ok
