    All my life I wanted to make that dress with my mother. She passed away and I finally made the dress in her honor as she was paralyzed and could no longer sew in the last years. So when she died, I mourned her so much my sweet husband took me to Atlanta and I saw the original gown by Walter Plunket. After 2 hours of sketching, I finally made the gown. I showed it at the Washington State Fair and there was a glass case to display the gown, hat & purse in protection on a mannequin. I put a gold curtain rod in the case just for fun. I wondered if anyone would notice and know the skit after all these years. People would stop, laugh uncontrollably and go grab someone else and pull them over to see it. I won over 10,000 votes for People's Choice, Judge's choice, Sweepstakes Grand Prize and a Special Award for History. I was floored! I guess they still remembered.

    This is a comedy masterpiece. Harvey Korman's impersonation of Rhett Butler was remarkable, how he transformed his face and his speech, you almost believe it's really Clark Gable saying those lines. I love you Carol Burnett, and I thank you for all joy and laughter you brought to my life.

    I was blessed with a busy studio singing career for 60 years and took part in several musical variety shows in the 60’s, one of which was the Carol Burnett Show. Exactly how she appears on her shows is how she was to work with and be around….kind, loving, and hilarious. I have so many fond memories of those years and am grateful to have had the chance to work with such a legend. And her show was the best thing to ever happen to Harvey Korman, RIP

    One of the documentaries made on the "Making of..." this skit pointed out something, which obviously was edited out of this. Bob Mackie said that in the hustle to get this parody ready--they had a week--none of the other actors saw the famous drapery dress before Carol stepped out on to the upstairs landing. Nearly all of the actors lost it. The audience laughed so long that the producers were worried about getting the commercials in before the thirty minute show time limit. The audience laughter set a record for the longest sustained laughter/applause in TV history up to that time, and it stood for decades.
    And you gotta love how Cissy/Prissy steals Rat/Rhett's famous last line of the real movie. "Frankly, my dear, I don't a damn." Pure comedy gold.

      it's genius, and a bit of relief in two ways. I know it's a dicey thing to judge a book or movie by modern day standards, but both Rhett's "hey, you destroyed my love for you" when he was just as cutting and dismissive as Scarlet, and how the slaves were depicted, is a bit creepy.
      So, watching him get a face slammed into his face, and Sissy shutting up the spoiled southern Belle, is just pure bliss.

    • @pocodfe

      So very true...especially back in those times, when saying the word "damn" was considered very shocking, and if it could be said, it had to be cleared by CBS executives, and they could only say it a certain number of times. (The Family sketches pushed that envelope the most...lol) So, when Carol cuts of Harvey from saying the word "damn," back in those times we all just assumed it wasn't allowed, because it really was rare. So when Vicki says it, it just blows that theory out of the water and makes it that much more hilarious!!

      “Stick your face in the punch bowl”! Dying laughing! My husband brought me most of The Carol Burnett Show on DVD-as he knew how much I missed my family (my WWII Hero Uncle married my mom’s oldest sister, one of her 10 siblings, and though they married for the first time later in life, my Uncle had a house built for my aunt & 7 female family members of aunts, mom, me & my sister-all the rest moved away, and we all moved in with them, and I am so grateful for those memories-especially after my most beloved Gramma died on my 11th birthday & mom died 12 years later on Christmas my Junior year of college) , and we just watched the same day of self-quarantine & Went with The Wind was on the first Disc. And believe me, unless there is an Eagles game on, my husband & I rarely watch TV together. He’ll watch my DVD of the Gilmore Girls entire 7 years of the series, plus the revival, so the few things we watch together other than our Eagles, Gilmore Girls, and all the DVD’s of the Dream Martin Variety Shows & the Roast, which my sister & I bought for my aunt & I luckily was the one to inherit them.

    These 4 together were hilarious. I remember watching with my mom an dad when I was a kid. This particular skit had me in tears. The reactions between them all, but especially Tim and Harvey throughout the show were classic. I miss the good old days of nice clean humor. They were so far ahead of their time with their comedy and their writers were phenomenal as well.

    The Carol Burnett Show, as she said herself, (Los Angeles Times) had backup similar to a Broadway Show every week with on site writers, orchestra and regular professional performers of the best quality. Incredible. She had injured her neck I think with the curtain rod dress, she had said at another time.
    At the time they called it a "Variety Show." There were many of those. However this one was a GREAT show. Even the costumes were by renowned designer Bob Makie. His designs were individually valuable. Awesome.

      How many people realize the economics behind the crinoline hoop skirt fashion craze? It was to create a market for cotton cloth and whalebone! After the Civil War kerosene replaced sperm whale oil and the whaling industry collapsed, and without slave labor cheap cotton rose in price. But from a romantic point of view, the hoop skirt was prettier than the bustle that followed. In any case women must have spent all their time getting dressed and then going to the privy!

    • @GlennaVan
      @GlennaVan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rogerpropes7129 - there are still hoop skirts around for really beautiful dresses. Years ago, I rented one to wear to the Marine Corps Ball. I also learned why they went out of style! They fit very poorly into cars and even more poorly into bathroom stalls!!!

    • @marlenelockhart959
      @marlenelockhart959 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sekan star they are gorgeous but because the middle hoop is around the buttocks, you have to lift the skirt up before sitting. I was one of six bridesmaids in a wedding party years ago and we wore gowns with hoops. They were absolutely gorgeous but we had to learn how to sit down. If you didn’t lift the hoop above your hip line, the entire front of the gown went straight up. Watching the six of us practice was hysterical. But learn we did. And we laughed ourselves silly. Watching this skit brought it back🙂
