  • Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, almost 50 years in the making and financed by the director himself, is out. It's certainly an ambitious film, but does its artistic, symbolic, and eccentric nature hit the mark, or fall absolutely flat?

The first time Dustin Hoffman and Jon Voight appeared in the same movie was 1969 Midnight Cowboy. It's a cultural icon. You wouldn't like it.

According to a report in The Guardian, the “Megalopolis” shoot was a clash between Coppola’s” old-school approach,” and “finding magic in the moment”, and newer digital film-making methods. Here’s one of the sources, via The Guardian: "I think Coppola still lives in this world where, as an auteur, you’re the only one who knows what’s happening, and everybody else is there just to do what he asks them to do."

It was a good movie. Everything in the story fits together linearly. For some reason, most reviewers don't seem to understand the story, the structure, or its meaning. It's ok not to like it but most of it is clear and coherent.

I respect your opinion! But yeah, coherent is the last word I would use for it lol. I got what it was doing, but there were plenty of weird/bizarre things going on and I think it’s one of those movies where I’m not quite sure how much was fully thought out versus just kinda things happening. I’d be interested to hear Coppola’s perspective to see if I should give it more credit

@Guywithnonamereviews I thought the movie was a long exploration of love on every level and from every side, and it is played on top of a retelling and twisting of an actual historical event. It showed the ugliness and beauty of love. There was grief, jealousy, sex as a weapon on the negative side. Catalina was in the middle of psychosis in the first half of the movie, but he was also an indifferent and uncaring; the visuals in the first half can be seen through the lens of his psychosis. We don’t see how Platinum falls in love with Catalina but we know how that drives her anger and jealousy; which is how Pulcher responds to rejection. It was love that redeemed him and the second half of the movie was how that happened. Beyond the personal love, the movie explores love through the lens of family and civics to the love of humanity and all beings. As love refines Catalina, he starts to care more about other people. The movie as a whole can be seen through the lens of a fable with magical realism. As a fable, it has a clear moral message. The structure was coherent and clear. For the historical events, the scandal with the Vestal virgin happened with the real Catalina being accused of trying to sleep with one, which was a potential death sentence. The Coliseum scene with the virgin also speaks to love misused, her virginity was being put up for sale. I also think the historical Catalina is split into two characters - the cousins portrayed by Driver, who is the superego, and Labeouf, who is the id. But Driver starts off with his id and superego fighting from the grief of the loss of his wife. Coppola subverted both fables and the ending of the real conspiracy. Rome became a dictatorship. And part of the point of the movie is we can't make it on our own. Love is what brought him out of the madness.

@@lymphomasurvive that was a great interpretation of it! And to be honest, that’s what I was hoping to get out of it. For me, however, there were WAY too many instances of characters acting bizarrely and it was muddied too much by the said artistic “noise.” I also found somewhere along the halfway point, it got less and less focused. Maybe I needed to ignore some of the stuff, such as why Platinum is standing still in Catalina’s apartment, muttering weird noises, why every character was extremely over-the-top eccentric, why Labeouf was dressed like a girl for a scene lol (just for fun I guess?), why the three panels randomly appeared, why when Catalina got shot, his face looked the way it did and then it randomly didn’t (don’t forget all the random moaning throughout), etc. To sum it up, the imagery and weirdness was so much, and yeah, I wish it could’ve been more focused and coherent. I think you and I demonstrate the two extremes: either it’s for you and you quite like it, or it’s not and you hate it

@@Guywithnonamereviews There is no way anyone would survive that head shot even with a pouring of megalon, that’s definitely the weakest point from any logical perspective. I didn’t like how Crassius was given a minor redemptive arc at the end given what he did. I’ve only seen it once and I didn’t go in with any expectations given the reviews I saw. I didn’t like the story line of the cadet gone awry. I can see why someone would hate it in parts but I thought it had good moments. I can completely understand why someone would hate it but I also saw what Coppola was doing and why. I’ll see how I feel after it releases digitally.
