This song oddly enough brings back old memories after someone I'll probably never see again. Last I heard she was in Fort worth... And I do still have her picture in my wallet
This was the first Todd Snider song I learned to play/perform cuz it just hit so close to home to a particular life situation i'd been through. The man's a legendary story teller. This generation's John Prine or otherwise, maybe better, idk, just me.
The perfection of this song is that you can do both. From the narrator’s perspective, it is kind of funny; they fool the cop, he’s got a cavalier but genuinely affectionate attitude toward her and the situation they’re in, in that he clearly loves her but he’s self aware enough to know that the lives that they’re living/have lived don’t leave much room for cheap sentimentality i.e. “In that old mainstream.” But looking from the outside, yeah, it’s a crazy sad song, in that had they made different decisions, there’s a chance they could have been happy together. and doing blow and getting tanked in a flea bag motel is a lifestyle that is fleeting at best. These two almost certainly don’t have long in this world and it’s both a blast and curse for us an audience to fall into this particular slice of their very difficult lives.
LOL, ok smart ass's i was just wandering..it took me a little while to realize... i always thought of the friends i had that were females in the past and we partied but it was never any thing serious.. an then one day i the light bulb went offf, my mistake.

Just discovered this wonderful artist thanks to a cover of this tune by the brilliant folkenbluzer!
Long ago in San Diego, he begrudgingly played my fave: you think you know somebody
Exceptional songwriting and major charisma even though it’s just one man & a guitar. Todd’s firing on all cylinders here
Love this song
Awesome
yes, sir, i'm sure she is, but that ain't all she is... she is also an old friend of mine.
Dude this hits home
@@alexbrown4820 For sure, it’s such a sweet recollection of the past that some people wouldn’t be proud of but I wouldn’t trade them for anything.
Cop had a heart
Love Me Some Todd
Looking forward to the movie based on this song
Pure awesomeness
Thanks for sharing. Todd Snider rules!
Kind of beautiful in its acceptance of debauchery.
To our selves
I hear people laughing in this recording. I cry each time I hear this song. Is it just me?
Agreed. There isn't much humor in this song.
No, man. Not just you.
I laugh because it's so real that I have to laugh to keep from crying
There are parts that make me laugh, but with tears in my eyes 🥲
