Hai Junoon, The band in which I was a drummer, played this song, somewhere 1992, at Dubai in a renowned company's annual party, mostly consists of Indian and Pakistan, British, Sri Lankans and Philippines. Lead guitarist a sri Lankan, key board, rythem, base guitarists from Philippines and singers, tabalist were from Kerala, on dholak a Bihari, all were Indians. Frankly speaking none of our band mates knew the meaning of this song. (Me even today) we choose this because of guitar solo part. Great piece of work. Apart from this song we played, mainly "Sultan of swing ( alchemy version) Hotel California, Smoke on the water, black magic woman"etc... In 2023 march, at 11:44 pm , still I am enjoying this song in my leisure time. Lots of love from India....Bro, keep on rocking....

I was 18 in 90s and could relate to it. Heard it first time on my first week to college in a bus. Asked the guy who the singers are. He was a Haryanavi and said, "manne na pata par sunn ke achha lage hai". My grand father came from Pakistan and I was made to learn Urdu so could understand it and translated it for him. The music from both India and Pakistan is divine.

There was something missing in the Coke Studio version of this song with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and that thing was tension. Ali Azmat was able to bring that layer of subtext to life with his vocal performance. The reason I want another album like Azadi is because even though the band admitted themselves they were working within many technical limitations, it forced them to be creative with what they had. We ended up with a very natural sounding album, not overly produced or computerized as many releases are today. If Salman Ahmed is reading this, join up Rohail Hyatt for those natural sounds, bring us an album with a theme, a common thread of meaning that runs through out and make videos just like Sayonee where we can see the story of the song. Azadi got me interested in Sufi poetry, now we live in a time where songs don't have any poetry of their own. Also do not be shy to release more instrumentals, songs these days are just as bankrupt when it comes to melody. I hope whatever you do release remains rich in something meaningful. For me Sayonee reflects the frustration and anxiety one feels once faced with a dead end. Khudi, another song on the album is how we can fly over these obstacles as long as we develop ourselves, I am starting with the man in the mirror as MJ might say.

Junoon has been my all time favourite band. Mr Salman Ahmed's guitar solos are truly artistic expressions and they breathe life into Junoons music. I have been listening to Junoon since my school days back in the 90s. This used to be my go to song and I enjoyed all the other songs like doasti, yaar bina, mukh gaye, heer, garaz baras and so on. What a memorable music ! Junoons music will never get old as they were way ahead of their times. Keep rocking Salman, Azmat and Brian.

My introduction to Sufi Rock Music, My aunt had the original audio cassette of "Azadi" by Junoon. I grew up hearing this rare genre of music like groovy bass lines, Indian percussions, Western Electric guitar solos were and still is very unique sound 3:15. Much respect and blessings for a long and healthy life to Ali Azmat, Salman Ahmad, and Brian O'Connell. They are no longer together in a band but my wishes are to cherish those times and situations that lead them to come together and create this art piece.

I was 18 in 90s and could relate to it. Heard it first time on my first week to college in a bus. Asked the guy who the singers are. He was a Haryanavi and said, "manne na pata par sunn ke achha lage hai". My grand father came from Pakistan and I was made to learn Urdu so could understand it and translated it for him. There was something missing in the Coke Studio version of this song with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and that thing was tension. Ali Azmat was able to bring that layer of subtext to life with his vocal performance. The reason I want another album like Azadi is because even though the band admitted themselves they were working within many technical limitations, it forced them to be creative with what they had. We ended up with a very natural sounding album, not overly produced or computerized as many releases are today. If Salman Ahmed is reading this, join up Rohail Hyatt for those natural sounds, bring us an album with a theme, a common thread of meaning that runs through out and make videos just like Sayonee where we can see the story of the song. Azadi got me interested in Sufi poetry, now we live in a time where songs don't have any poetry of their own. Also do not be shy to release more instrumentals, songs these days are just as bankrupt when it comes to melody. I hope whatever you do release remains rich in something meaningful. For me Sayonee reflects the frustration and anxiety one feels once faced with a dead end. Khudi, another song on the album is how we can fly over these obstacles as long as we develop ourselves, I am starting with the man in the mirror as MJ might say.
SAYONEE IS THE MOST COVERED SONG IN PAK MODERN MUSIC HISTORY.

Junoon has been my all time favourite band. Mr Salman Ahmed's guitar solos are truly artistic expressions and they breathe life into Junoons music. I have been listening to Junoon since my school days back in the 90s. This used to be my go to song and I enjoyed all the other songs like doasti, yaar bina, mukh gaye, heer, garaz baras and so on. What a memorable music ! Junoons music will never get old as they were way ahead of their times. Keep rocking Salman, Azmat and Brian.

My introduction to Sufi Rock Music, My aunt had the original audio cassette of "Azadi" by Junoon. I grew up hearing this rare genre of music like groovy bass lines, Indian percussions, Western Electric guitar solos were and still is very unique sound 3:15. Much respect and blessings for a long and healthy life to Ali Azmat, Salman Ahmad, and Brian O'Connell. They are no longer together in a band but my wishes are to cherish those times and situations that lead them to come together and create this art piece.
