i think how mr robinson shows appreciation/love is being mean, his entire life at this point was having a back and forth with his wife (whos worst than him). he even tried to get gumball and darwin happy with him in one episode after being too mean to them. he likes gumball and darwin but he can only express it through being rude (only a little theory, take it with a grain of salt). (also not to mention his heart literally kills him if he tries to show any emotion other than rudeness)
