I just got the books 😁 I've seen the entire Game of Thrones series three times (showing it to my friends haha) and the first season of House of the Dragon.
The opening scene of this series did such a great job of planting the idea that there was more to this world than what the rest of the season would show. Everything else is so grounded in realism that you forgot what is beyond the Wall. But whenever mentions of the days of magic, magical creatures, and White Walkers no longer existing or even being questioned to have existed at all, you always end up being reminded of that opening scene.
Fun fact for the Targaryens, their actually supposed to have literally pure white hair and piercing purple eyes, they’d stand out to an extreme anywhere. Also, Dany is 12 in the books, about 15/16 in the show. Oh and also also, there are supplemental videos people have made on TH-cam detailing the lore and knowledge not adapted from the books for each season, they can help give a greater understanding of the setting overall.
You guys should absolutely make a game of thrones poster board. The number of families grows and some of the names sound similar plus there’s other city’s and kingdoms it gets wonky

Should be a long fun ride. We binged it during the early pandemic. There’s a lot of great storylines and scenes. I think you’ll dig it. You’ll get the characters as it goes. As long as it is, it doesn’t really drag-on. A chart might still be a good idea. Yes, the theme gets stuck in your head.
I strongly recommend watching this with the subtitles on. And not just because there are scenes where they're not speaking English. It will help with understanding their accents, learning their names, and catching small details of the dialogue that you might miss. I found it super useful to do that when I was watching it for the first time.
This is one hell of a journey. I can’t wait for you to get into it. It’ll take a while to deal with the names and the places but keeping a note of it all will help you out! The poster board is a great idea
I've watched this whole TV show about a dozen times ... and I never get bored. I enjoy it when a friend of mine who hasn't seen it (and isn't keen initially) watches it for the first time ... and gets OBSESSED with it. The problem I have, is having conversations about it without giving spoilers away ... especially with stuff that will occur several seasons away.
You both were on another level during this episode. You had me cracking up. You will definitely catch on to the names and countries. Using subtitles helped me.

Because the GOT theme is 🔥🔥 and 2. It shows you the layout of the map of the kingdom and adds a new area if we are seeing a new setting in the episode!

Many of the actors, though incredibly talented, had their breakthrough into the great mainstream with this series, or rather, this series made them become recognizable. So them telling you "this person was in Game of Thrones" is kind of expected.
