I’m a bit sad you didn’t even give a mention of Dark Raichu from the Team Rocket expansion. It had the distinction of being the first secret rare with a collection number higher than the set. It was just your regular holo card (but there wasn’t a non-foil version of it). Of course you could always cover that in a video about secret rare cards, which are common now, but weren’t a regular thing in Pokémon for quite a while.
Started playing casually with friends again after a few years. Cuz my collection isn't huge, we didn't worry about set and we decided that, as house rules, all GX, EX and Level X are played with the rules of Level X cards that give 2 prizes (3 for tag teams) for balances sake.
My favorite was the Star's. My favorite card in my collection is the Gold Star Mew. I love the art, I love that it's shiny, and I love that it's water type. I've never been much of an active player, but I've been collecting the cards since base set. With breaks in between.
Yeah I don't think anything will come close to being as cool as gold Star Pokemon. I like that they attempted to reintroduce them with prisms but it just wasn't the same
I remember when my local pharmacy had Pokémon cards during the Firered/Leafgreen era. First pack I picked there at 10 years old had that FRLG Charizard ex, wish it was still in good condition though... 😅
Grea video but there's a couple holes I noticed: 1. Secret Rare Dark Raichu 2. The multitude of random secret rares in the ex series 3. The secret rare Meowth from B&W NV 4. Secret rare shiny reprints that were introduced in I believe B&W ND
Why not make a video that includes all shiny pokemon in the tcg? You know, the history of shiny pokemon in the tcg? I now know how big of a nerd of pokemon I am when I saw this video. I literally knew every single rarity/chase card that you mention. Haha
With the shining cards, some of them did match their shiny forms from the games, like Noctowl and Steelix, whereas others like Mewtwo and Charizard were kinda loose with how they depicted the Gen 2 sbiny forms for those pokémon. Then once they were reintroduced in Shining Legends they gave those pokémon their correct shiny colours.
I wonder if in expanded if you used pikachu gx if you could evolve it into raichu prime then raichu prime when you at about to get knocked out so you don't have to loose 2 prizes
I thought this was gonna be about cards in the pokemon tcg that did high damage at the time on a basic or stage 1 pokemon for relatively low energy and then comboed it with gust effect cards in order to chase pokemon on the bench
GX’S may have had the greatest power creep but introducing the mechanics for stage 1 and 2 sort of limited it. TAG TEAMS killed that but basics always get the focus.
Does anyone know if it's legal to put a break onto a lvlX? Edit: I'm asking this because i think that technically the "lvlX" part is not part of the name
I didn't have much experience playing the tcg before it, but I did get to experience the way the first Mewtwo EX dominated with double colourless. I took a break and got back into the game around team up and was just shocked at the power difference. I wanted to make my old pyroar/mewtwo ex/charizard ex deck in expanded but I just don't think it has the power behind it anymore.
Little disappointed that FA Trainers, and SR Items, Stadiums, and the SR shinies in the BW and SR alternate art cards in the XY era. Good video besides.
You miss the mark on describing the term 'chase card' Chase cards are cards worth money, no more no less. With that context, any card has potential to be chase cards for multiple reasons Some common reasons are: -if collectors want them -if the card is playable -if the card is short printed -if the card is rarity (all the cards in this video fall under this category) Still a nice educational video though
Super unsure if this has been mentioned and im super sure you already know this and nothing can be done, but of course Charizard EX belongs to Fire Red Leaf Green, not Ruby Sapphire haha, but that was probably just a mishap on your end
god yes ex pokemon. My absolute favorite pokemon card type. The foil border and the circle speckles look so nice. After that would probably be gx pokemon, nice big art, and maybe prime pokemon in 3rd place.
Anyone else tired of Charizard getting a card all of the freaking time? Because I am lol. It's nice to see Pokemon like Shuckle and Regirock who don't get much attention get cards.
The thing that I'm happy about is that it has three fantastic cards in competitive play. Well two in the US with the third coming out. I can't keep up with all the Charizards coming out. I also look forward to the new Blastoise and Venusaur Tag Teams.
Arceus knows how much I hate Charizard -_- the only reason I'm always happy if I pull one is because I know some fanboy/-girl pays a price that's way too high 😂
I’ve been playing since x and y the format was amazing and competitive was actually interesting for me but ever since sun and moon the power creep has discouraged me
Call of Legends, terrible set full of reprints and unusable legendaries. But I'd rather have terrible legendaries than basics that rule the format on their own
Interesting thing with EX cards was that up until the final B&W expansion only legendaries got EX's, so during that time there weren't any EX's that would've otherwise been basics.
Charizard ex was from fire red and leaf green not ruby and sapphire. I traded a binder of holo foil cards for 1 of those cards then sold it on eBay for 300 dollars lol
Oh I know, I did mention it was the set before EX Rocket Returns. I just used Charizard as examples a lot. EX Emerald was just the first set where exs were featured :)
How did you just gloss over all the extra rarities? Full arts, rainbows, gold cards. That's what chase is. No one is chasing normal EX or GX or V cards. They aren't even worth $5. lol
Could you cover the most expensive from each set too? That'd be a really cool compilation
That'd be like a 30 minute video lol. I'd watch it but it'd be a pain for him to make I'll bet
I’m a bit sad you didn’t even give a mention of Dark Raichu from the Team Rocket expansion. It had the distinction of being the first secret rare with a collection number higher than the set. It was just your regular holo card (but there wasn’t a non-foil version of it).

I just found out about that this morning so I hopped on eBay n got me a dark raichu by noon

Level X Is still my favourite.
Can I just marvel at the absolute fluke that the URL for this video has "mew" in it
Seems quite fitting tbh
Gold Star Mew
My favorite was the Star's. My favorite card in my collection is the Gold Star Mew. I love the art, I love that it's shiny, and I love that it's water type.

I love this type of history videos
thank you for you amazing work
Thank for you for kind words :D
Ross, your vids are fantastic! This has to be one of my favorites. I appreciate your content.
I'm currently chasing the shiny Charizard GX. Opened tons of awesome hidden fates pack on but still missing that one. Wish me luck!
Good luck!
Baby Pokemon? like Cleffa from Neo Genesis that both counted as it's own stage and as a basic

It seems to me that the Platinum/Diamond and HGSS overlap was the best era of Pokemon.
I'm a big fan. Please do a ghost pokemon themed video for Halloween!
Do you think Mega gardy is any good in expanded with gardevoir/sylveon GX?
Two years later and several of those actually saw reprints in Celebrations... but of course no Crystal Types which is criminal
Why not make a video that includes all shiny pokemon in the tcg? You know, the history of shiny pokemon in the tcg?
I now know how big of a nerd of pokemon I am when I saw this video. I literally knew every single rarity/chase card that you mention. Haha
any advice for someone wanting to start a pokemon opening channel or someone collecting, ?

My kid pulled a charizard vmax - 012/189 yesterday and I believe its the only card worth a dam in the entire sword and shield set.
This is great so glad you did this video thank you Ross
Really well made video mate!
I wonder if in expanded if you used pikachu gx if you could evolve it into raichu prime then raichu prime when you at about to get knocked out so you don't have to loose 2 prizes
You cannot since prime cards only works on normal basics a pikachu gx isnt a pikachu
I thought this was gonna be about cards in the pokemon tcg that did high damage at the time on a basic or stage 1 pokemon for relatively low energy and then comboed it with gust effect cards in order to chase pokemon on the bench
Missed the BW shinys and secret rares. Besides that great vid!
what about Legendary Collection reverse holos or is it just now that people go crazy for them?
james ford Why?
GX’S may have had the greatest power creep but introducing the mechanics for stage 1 and 2 sort of limited it. TAG TEAMS killed that but basics always get the focus.
One step forward, two steps back
rip to the gold star charizard i pulled as a kid. no clue where it went, but damn do i miss it
What about the other shiny secret rare pokemon from Next Destines to Plasma Blast, such as the exeggcute?
They're Secret Rare cards. They're just reprints. They're not like EX, GX, Primes etc :)
You forgot the various SR reprints in DP
I'd love to know how much these cards all cost upon release.
What about the cards that say, stop double barrier and max, what are all of them and what do they do. Please
Anyone else tired of hearing and seeing Charizards? Not even halfway through the video... We get people like Charizard
Does anyone know if it's legal to put a break onto a lvlX?
Edit: I'm asking this because i think that technically the "lvlX" part is not part of the name
Level X is NOT part of the name. So you can have 4 in any combination of Luxray GL and Luxray GL Lv.x. You CANNOT have 4 of each. So...
I didn't have much experience playing the tcg before it, but I did get to experience the way the first Mewtwo EX dominated with double colourless. You arent talking about the chase cards, you are just mentioning the new types for each set.
When was the lost zone implemented/created? Was it in the base set or was it later?
as far back as EX i think

So many water type Lugia, weird.
First! Theese cards are all awesome!

Shaymin EX and Jirachi EX.

Secret rares?
