It seemed like there were a lot of ice skating specials back in the 90’s. I don’t even know what exactly made skating so hip and trendy back then, maybe it was the fact that so many young people like Oksana Baiul and Michelle Kwan did it that made it cool
Because back then I think in the early days even in the mid-90s women's figure skating was still all about grace and beauty and not the the jumping Bonanza contest that is the day it's all about the jumps these days not the artistry I feel.😢
I remembered going to so many “On Ice” specials back in the 90’s from the Disney films to Anastasia on Ice. This is a beautiful rendition of this classic movie.
I saw this live at Arco Arena (RIP) in Sacramento with my parents. It always pops into my head from time to time (I really enjoyed it!) but never thought to check the web for a record of it. To be a little kid again...
My parents took me to see this here in Ohio when I was young as The Wizard of Oz is my favorite movie. My favorite character is the Tin Man, so my dad made me a poster that read I ❤TIN MAN that I held up during If I Only Had a Heart. The skater/actor skated over to me and held my hand (may have kissed it; don't remember lol) and my mom has a photo of him standing in front of us. Thanks for the wonderful memories ❤
I would have been 4 when this aired, and it's lived in the back of my head ever since. This special had me CONVINCED that Dorothy and the Scarecrow were madly in love and I was sad that she left Oz. 😅
I think most Oz kids of the 90s hold a special place for this special in their hearts. I was lucky enough to see it on tour when I was 5 and then the TV special came along to allow at least part of the memory to be preserved for all time. Fun fact: Early versions of the screenplay depicted Dorothy and Hunk, the Scarecrow's Kansas counterpart, as young sweethearts. The "miss you most of all" line was actually a remnant of this early subplot.
Unfortunately, TV specials often fall into complex copyright situations due to multiple parties being involved. In order for Oz on Ice to be offered in an official format (DVD, BluRay, or streaming), an agreement would need to be reached by Turner Entertainment, Ringling Brothers/Feld Entertainment, and CBS. Individual performer contracts may also muddy the waters a bit. For example, Oksana Baiul's contract may have specifically stipulated a VHS-only release for either a limited time or a limited quantity.
@@KyleMUC All the touring Dorothy's wore wigs to emulate Judy's hair in the film, whereas the TV special allowed Oksana to keep her natural blonde. This was likely an attempt to keep her recognizable - or perhaps she just didn't like the idea of skating with a wig on!
Wow it’s a superb show, Dorothy is blonde but it’s better that some girl in a detectable wig as theatre would do even if the actor is brunette their hair teams can’t braid actual hair when most teenagers have done it for decades
The original touring production did have Dorothy in a wig. For the TV special they opted not to wig Oksana Baiul, likely to retain recognizability. At any rate, wigs are often used in theatre not for lack of ability on the part of the hair team but for consistency, to limit time in the makeup chair, and ease in transitions between styles - not to mention applying excessive amounts of heat and styling product for weeks, months, or years on end can really take its toll on an actor's hair!
@@thespiritofozThis guy is a pervert who is notorious for commenting on women’s hair. He stalks princess party groups and comments how much he hates wigs. I highly suggest blocking him.
It’s incredible the corners of the internet you manage to get to with your wig wearing antics. How your family have not banned you from the internet given the amount of complaints they’ve received about your behaviour is beyond me.
@@thespiritofoz honestly I’ve seen it done where a actress has brown hair and she braids her hair, I wouldn’t make excuses as I doubt anyone enjoys wearing those low budget detectable party wigs that theatres will mass use and it makes a very fake looking character, if you have to spend 2 hours being transformed then that’s the magic of acting, to age hair damage why cast straight haired people as characters with curls and vice versa

It's looks like new DVD releases review history books documentary about biography book club fun more information on this on ice
Punctuation dude
Ice specials go back even further than that; I remember a plethora of them in the 70's.
1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympics. Including the Miracle on Ice.

Omg I love you forever who posted this with the commercials my parents taped this on TV .we lost the tape a long time ago thank you so much
This is a real treat to watch Thanks for uploading this
OMG, I'm not even mad that this has commercials cuz my old VHS also had these commercials!! Wow! Love it!!
It's a full nostalgia experience! We plan to eventually upload it without commercials for those who prefer the uninterrupted experience.
I almost think the commercials give it the sense of a time capsule because you can look back and see what was going on back then
It's rather impressive how Miss Gulch was able to ride her bike on the ice.
The entire cast of this production was truly talented!
STEPHEN STANDRING
Thank you so much!!!
ORIGINAL AIRDATE: TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27th, 1996.
The special ranked 70th in the ratings that week, and fourth in its time slot. It had a 7.1/11 rating/share and 11.4 million viewers.
Loved how Bobby McFerrin served as the host and narrator for this special, but also appeared as the Wizard himself.
I remember seeing this on ice when it came to Perth Western Australia when i was a 6 year old in 1997!
Awww the way the Scarecrow carried Dorothy to his arms in the end. Knowing she will miss him most of all

Absolutely amazing!
This was my childhood memories, I have seen this on TV but I have never seen it in person, still this is awesome.
I remember my mom taking me to see this when it was touring when I was little.

This brings back such great chilhood memories of when I saw "The Wizard of Oz On Ice" in Vancouver, Canada at the age of five back in 1997!

the director of the pest starring john leguizamo directed this special
I wonder why this isn't on DVD? I would be watching it for hours.

Maybe this is a mandela effect but wasnt there a dorothy voice named renee before? I bought the behind the scenes video ! I cant find her anywhere
Dorothy’s voice actor for this show was Laurneá Wilkerson
Fun Fact: Before voicing Dorothy in Oz on Ice, Wilkerson understudied Dorothy in the Broadway production of The Wiz.
I remember being mad she was blonde.
Haha same - although the Dorothy in the production I saw in Cleveland had a bad wig - indeed brunette, but bad 😆

Why can't Dorothy do anything without Toto?
So, the other young lady who played Dorothy, Jerry Campbell was better than this Dorothy. Jerry gave me CHILLS.

Dorothy is blonde in the Oz books.
I can't skate.
sad
Same I’m like Bambi when it comes to being on ice
Disliked this Bobby guy.....we can see what's going on in the action! The singer is not to my liking either! Can she sing without screaming????
"This Bobby guy" was one of the nation's chart-toppers, and much sought after in those days.
53:20 - Puccini's Messa di Gloria makes an appearance in the score.
