That's why you have to do the goofy powers of 2 math to isolate if specific bits in that byte are 0 or 1. It's really efficient for computers because they can often just shift the bits left or right for calculations. For comparison, the screenshot you posted in game chat might be 3MB or 3,000KB, or 3,000,000 bytes. An equivalent amount of space could hold 24,000,000 bit masked values for the game if the devs wanted to define them all. There's online calculators to do the math for you if you need them. Generally modern games would keep bit masks behind the scenes or store one value in 4-8 bytes which is where you get the common overflow bugs for stuff like money in games when you go over 2.14 billion. My guess is one of the reasons for the bit masking was to allow the save files to be sent over email.
