NATS Virtual Conf. Breakout EXCERPT #2 - Project 2020: 21st C. Women Composers & Lauren Spavelko

This is a BRIEF EXCERPT of a 1-hr presentation/preview which offers the first “public” performances of pieces from Program One of this two recital series of works by 21st Century Women composers, along with a discussion of the project, programming, the PROJECT 2020 Commission Initiative. All performances will have been recorded at a distance. The artists will also discuss their process for continuing to rehearse and perform “together” while living in two different cities during the COVID-19 pandemic and their view of the importance and great artistic value of the solo art song during these unusual times.
PROJECT 2020 represents contemporary viewpoints on modern life, music, creativity, justice, relationships and spirituality over two seasons through two unique art song programs. This program aims to offer a modern and diverse, truthful view of life from a woman’s perspective.

This excerpt shares a brief excerpt of composer Lauren Spavelko's song "Looking Out" from the cycle Baby Book. Lauren was a 2019 NATS Composition Award Finalist. Two of her pieces from the cycle are discussed in this presentation in detail.

The complete presentation, featuring complete recordings and discussions of 7 new songs was prepared for the National Association of Singing Virtual Conference to take place June 24-30th.
