Today I drove to Ross on Wye, - not far from my home, to see how the Wye was looking after the recent rain, and to do the 'John Kyrle Circular Walk'.
The river was very swollen and I could see it had gone well over the banks in many places - resulting in the riverside path being very muddy - something which I perhaps mention a few times during the filming...
The 3-mile walk took me alongside the Wye and then doubled back towards the town, past the landmark-spire of St Mary's Church and finally back down to the river where there are some fabulous metal sculptures of swans and mallards, made by Walenty Pytel. I also tell you a little about John Kyrle too - known as 'The man of Ross'.
Hope you'll enjoy this brief visit to Ross on Wye!
    Cheers,
    Jeff

That 40mph sign was a touch optimistic on that mud path at 11mins in

Hah hah! Yes, I wondered if anyone would mention that! The road is right next to it of course, but it makes a funny photo all the same 👍

Very impressed that you attempted a riverside walk with all the rain we’ve had. I will attempt it in the summer when the weather is better. Was it muddy by any chance? 😂

Thanks Gerald - though I ought to confess that I hadn't anticipated the degree of muddiness which faced me! Yes, be a lovely walk in the summer... mind you, I thought it polite not to mention the sewage works, just at the far end of the field. Best say no more about that... ☹️

Only seconds into presentation and my need to voice opinion has overtaken good manners. I do like the birds on the pole. But oh my, such a graceful sculpture on a… could they really not find a more fitting support? So, shall we give the statue of grace and form a support that suits the mood. Or shall we just bolt it onto that old signless post?
That was quite a neatly clipped hedge. And well maintained fence. But oh for the mud. I’ve not walked that way but if I do, I’ll certainly do so after a dry spell.
I looked up John Kyrle and it right that he’s known as ‘The Man of Ross’. He came from old money but spent it not on himself; but on the people of Ross, be they needy & poor or else. He laid out and paid for The Prospect, where all could enjoy the walks and views, plus the siting of a public fountain, where the town’s people could get clean water. He studied law and would happily mediate between parties, to avoid the employ of costly attorneys. He planted trees and walked a lot, spending most of his post studies life in the outdoors. He does read, as being a genuinely agreeable fellow. And is buried in the local churchyard.
And last going off, an equally uninspired support for the second sculpture.
Thank you for another interesting and enjoyable if muddy presentation.

Thanks DC for your thoughtful-as-ever comment! I do agree with you about the sculptures. In fact I think there is another, similar sized sculpture on a roundabout outside Ledbury, which is also of birds, and must have been done by the same person. It too is perched on the same uninspiring metal pole. But who knows - maybe that's what the artist wanted?
      Yes, mud, mud, mud.
Well done on the research about John Kyrle. He sounds like an all-round good egg! Next time I'm in Ross I may pop up to the graveyard and look for his grave.
      Cheers 👍

Hi Jeff, Looks like you had an enjoyable walk, regardless of the mud, Getting slightly lost always adds to the adventure, when in doubt, go left, 8:15 minutes into the video. I loved that brickwork on those tunnels going under the road and the stonework at the cemetery gates. I was impressed by your power to avoid the pub and go straight to the chippy, but you were driving so a sensible choice made. Swans in flight made me think of a silly song by John Shuttleworth called "Pigeons in flight". He also recorded as Jilted John back in the punk era with the "Gordon Is a Moron" song. I'm showing my age. Great vlog Jeff, looking forward to the next.👍

      Thanks Dave,
yeah, it was a nice walk and I felt I'd earned the chippy by the end of it.
Ross isn't too big a place so I always had an idea of where I was. But oh, that mud!
I can remember Jilted John very well too, and especially the Gordon song!
This week I went up as far as Wolverhampton, walking there from Tipton station. Catch the video from Monday (only a little mud on this one!) 😊

Thanks Iain - not the most exciting of subjects I'm afraid. Then again, its not every day you see a pair of ducks stuck on top of a lamppost! 👍
