Great video, when I first got into HA it provided me a great intro into buying, mounting a tablet and baisc Kiosk browser via Fully Kiosk. I didn't hard wire the USB but ran a USB extension into the wall cavity and then into a pre-existing GPO. Since my intitial install of tablet and Fully Kiosk I've increased in confidence with HA. I've been able to implement the rest, python script, call/create sensors/entities and have a better understanding of MQTT payloads. Really valuable video as you go on your automation journey. Thanks!
Awesome video and write-up. Found a Perth local also using Home Assistant as well! Great to know there is a local sparky with home automation knowledge.
Just found your channel through youtube browsing/algorithm, great content mate! Hope to see you grow in the future, it is definitely a bit more technical and in-depth than most home assistant/smart home youtubers. Which is great for me and surely a lot of other people, maybe you found a great niche to creep into. (Plus the aussie accent is oddly soothing) Keep it up, wish you the best
Very good video. I was actually considering something like this for the system I am planning to integrate into my home as I implement an off-grid solar and wind power installation. Thanks for the explanation of how to do this.
James!! I have been learning using TH-cam for over a year and this is by far the best vid I have seen . And the fact you're in Australia is really cool . Its a small world ....This is probably a bit creepy for you, but you actually buy from the company I work for, Voltex. Did you work out with your customer what the problem was regarding the Barcelona downlights being too bright ? Love your work brother!! (I wonder if the little transformer mech fits into a Voltex switch....)
Thanks that is awesome. Okay going to start playing now, could be nice with the new mushroom cards. Are you still using this, did you eventually update the Samsung. Smile so many questions.
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I do have one concern about using a tablet like this plugged in and constantly "charging". I have seen a Samsung Galaxy TAB that was plugged in 24/7 and used as an always on security camera display, and after about 18 months the battery swelled so much that the case was bowed out in the front and back and it actually started to pop the screen off the case. Should this be a concern with a tablet that is always powered and charging? Since it is wired directly to the wall, could/should the battery be removed for safety issues?
I had the idea of using a picture frame (cutting it down to size) for this - and using a rather low cost tablet for it with an external proximity trigger to wake the device but it's quite some time since I looked into it.
Hi James, i followed you instructions and set the same settings in Fully. Motion detection works as expexted (display switch on and after 30 second goes off), but when I try again (5-10 Minutes) the screen switch on, but is frozen, also manually reload (swipe) is not possible. First when I activate fully config (fast tap 5 times) the password promt for fully apears and the the page (home assistan) reload again. Do you know, waht the problem can be?
Hi Jimmy, newb looking at setting up a smartphone for the first time. Is gone assistant actually running on the tablet or is it running somewhere else and the tablet is just an interface?
Hi James, Great video. Question regarding the physical install of the USB charger into the wall, what is the little white connector you use to bridge the power? trying to source the same component. Look forward to more videos 👍
It's a 240v to USB mech that would normal fit into a standard au switch plate . Part number is in the description. There are various brands, the one I used is one of the smallest physically.
I’ve tried, unfortunately the MyAir tablet is not very fast/powerful and it’s modifications make the dashboard not work properly, I couldn’t get it to work very well/consistently. You can add the myair sensor readings and the power on off, heating/cool etc into home assistant quite easily.
Hello Jimmy thanks for the video. I do have a question, you shared the files for python_scripts, tried to execute them after installing and reboot, but no luck! Nothing happens. Is there something on my end I do completly wrong? I do miss just those tiny steps in the video that helps me understand the whole process you created. Also you mention later on the automations you created, are you willing to share those? Might be handy for a noob like me ;)
What does that Unifi tab do? Open your UniFi controller in an I frame or something else? I haven’t seen a UniFi plugin that isn’t crap so i am interested if its a plugin.
i Recently installed Home assistant on a old Netbook {intel atom n270} but i cannot see the Addon's button? How can i get this to Appear. since i rather not buy a new device just to use Home assistant. and Yes i am aware that the "Linux/docker" version is no longer supported.
Excellent vid, well explained and shown ; planning on doing just this but I had the requirement for no wifi so my cable connection has to be data and power. I just got a 3d printed holder. Keen to try the new dashboard in HA. WIll check out the Kiosk Browser; hoping its not required to be connected to their server. You have answer allot of my concerns. Cheers from Goulburn in Oz
Great video, Been looking into trying to get into Home Automation and great to know that there is a decent way to get a nice control panel via a tablet. Thanks for the info. I may have to have a look at this whenever I actually get around to trying Home Automation. p.s. Just subbed for more videos :D haha
For me I like that fully koisk turns on the screen as you approach, which is very handy if you have an old/cheap tablet, makes the whole process faster. Also you have load in different URLs from home assistant, so it doesn't even need to be Home Assistant GUI. You can also use HAdashboard too which is very customisable.

Awesome stuff! One thing I really want to get going as I have all my house door contacts listed as entities in hassio I simply want some mp3 files I have saved to say things like "front door open" if front door opens. I see the command here " Play Sound from file on HASSIO 192.168.1.233:2323/?cmd=playSound&url=http%3A%2F%2F192.168.1.236%3A8123%2Flocal%2Fsounds%2FClassic-doorbell-sound.mp3&loop=true&password=password&stream=1&type=json " Im still kind of new to hassio and the language layout. What I want to know is where do I copy my audio files to in my pi4 running hassio and when running that command in a "action" statement what is the correct format?
Sound like a good idea, I might try that a warning if the gate is stuck open longer than 90 secs, so the kids don't escape. Place the sound files you want to play (mp3) in config/www/sounds which you can get to pretty easy using the HA file editor or many other ways, if sounds is not there just create it. Then in then to play it in an automation call the service - rest_command.kiosk_command With the service data cmd: "playSound" and url: "http%3A%2F%2F192.168.1.236%3A8123%2Flocal%2Fsounds%2FClassic-doorbell-sound.mp3" you need to change the name of the mp3 file to use file name and change the IP address to your tablets IP address, but it will look for it in config/www/sounds and remember the file paths and names are case sensitive. And of course make sure you actural have the rest_command.kiosk_command setup as per the blog post here: www.egglec.com.au/post/fully-kiosk-browser-and-home-assistant which I assume you've probably already done.
@@JamesEggleston Thank you for the reply. Yes the rest command is setup. Could you by chance give me a exact example of the structure for the Service call? As in the code for a simple random file? Hi David, I have linux ubuntu with HA in a docker, running on a NUC, I sometimes use the linux system to do other things, it's not my preffered setup I'm about to change back to HA directly installed on a NUC without linux, as the performance seemed better, it is the cheapest intel Nuc you can get, it's a celeron.
