That's what I do also. Used to take pictures of junky cars me and my buddy had a game where we would send pictures all the time of stuff that was just junk now I take pictures anytime I see something odd out in the wild

Good content Doug. It’s remarkable how GM is responsible for many of these abandoned and therefore rare models.
It's because GM is such an enormous company
GM had much more success with these other nameplates than people understand. many of these nameplates were definitely on their way out of business. if it wasn't for GM, including Saturn. and GM breathed new life into them.
Ford did the same thing with nameplates. such as Jaguar, Range Rover, Mazda, Volvo, and others.

Lmao Also Mazda and Volvo are doing great and both produce better vehicles than GM could ever dream of making. The other two are at the very least staying afloat. Ford is nowhere near bankruptcy, but you can keep dreaming. Hahaha
I saw a 9-4X a couple of days ago and I didn't realize they only made 814 of them. Crazy to think that I had one parked just behind me.

So here's a cool story that Doug just reminded me of. I was watching a murder documentary not too long ago where a guy picked up a college girl in his car and later killed her. Unfortunately for him he was picked up on the campus security cameras. His car was a blue Saturn Astra and because it was such a uncommon car law enforcement was able to find him fairly easily and he was soon convicted of the crime.

Similar to the Suzuki Equator was the Mitsubishi Raider, a rebadged Dodge Dakota sold from 2006 to 2009. They made like 20k of them in their lifespan and they’re also super under-the-radar.
Seen tons of Mitsu Raiders through every corner of the US but never seen a Equator. Assuming there were way more Raiders made
Yeah. I was reminded of this as well when Doug mentioned the Suzuki Equator. A friend of my dad's owns a Mitsubishi Raider.

Love this kind of info that so many other enthusiasts seem not to care about so much or know of. This is why Doug made it big I think, cause the angle he approaches car reviews and the details he chooses to speak about are rather unique, interesting , and funny.

The Vauxhall Astra was incredibly successful here in Northern Ireland
And the opel Astra was successful in the rest of west Europe

Cool thing about the Tribeca was that it had the same 3.0 H6 that was in the Legacy and Outback of the time. Surprisingly stout engine that was super reliable and had a timing chain instead of a belt, and it didn't have head gasket issues like the 4 cylinders did. Really cool to see an H6 engine outside of a Porsche.
Had an '04 Outback with that 3.0 H6, best car I ever drove by a long way! Replaced it not long ago with a 2017 Outback with the 3.6, and while there's a lot to love about that car too, it doesn't drive like the '04. Something a little too refined about the newer engine, even though it's bigger and technically puts more power down, the older one was more fun somehow.
My point is - anything with that 3.0 from that era is a winner in my book!

Kia Borrego was an amazing SUV, one of my parents had one while I was in high school. Horrible timing of its US release, but truly was a great vehicle
I worked for a Kia dealership ( later was laid off by them due to the financial crisis) at the time, they were really sweet. They had the right car at the wrong time. I think they’ve fixed that with the telluride though

@@chriskonte1909 yeah the Saturn Astra XR is the Astra H GTC but the only engine option in the US is the 1.8 and no body kit. Some of the looks with no power.

The body shop I used to do parts for did a quick bumper job on a borrego! I had no idea it was rare until now
As someone from the middle east, I see them everyday. The police here in Dubai uses a fleet of Borrego/Mohave. This vehicle also received a big facelift recently.

Another one you hardly ever see a whole lot (at least from personal experience) is the Oldsmobile Silhouette, which Doug also reviewed. Around the time I got my license, I used to drive my grandmother's before it broke down and I had only seen one other Silhouette around town. Granted I live in a smaller town so it's hard to tell compared to some of the other picks
That Kia Borrego actually looks pretty nice. Like, it would probably sell well today, especially seeing as how Kia has really gotten MUCH better over the years. Plus, the recession didn’t help much at all. But even so, selling 23,000 vehicles in that category for Kia and for a brand new model that not many people know about during a recession is not that bad at all to be honest. Now that they have the Telluride and it’s doing well, they should definitely try coming back with the Borrego

You say that, but that’s been GM’s business strategy for decades. Funnily though, most of the entries on this list are products of GM.

@@bradydevergilio7478 well at least Chrysler changes up their styling between charger and 300. GM literally makes the same exact car. Take a look at the Escalade and the Suburban. Or the Silverado and Tahoe.
@@Anthony-en5ov My favorite of these is the Dodge Dakota and Mitsubishi Raider. Same damn truck, might be some minor differences, mainly just the badge. Mitsu dealer near me had a (as in ONE) Raider, and I was truck-shopping at the time, but it was so loaded down with every option that it was crazy expensive, thousands more than the Dakotas you could get across town. Just have to wonder what the thought process was there, we have this already-struggling model that's perceived as an inferior knockoff at best, with Mitsu's bad rep, and it's absurdly overpriced too? Some sort of tax write-off maybe.
I wound up with a Nissan Frontier myself, it was way cheaper than the Dakota even AND more reliable.

The other day me and a friend were exploring at night and we came across two first-gen, two-door Toyota RAV-4s with big EV decals on them parked behind what I think was a fenced mechanic shop. At first my buddy didn't think much of them because he has a better taste in cars than me, but after I googled how many of them were made for the U.S., which was around 2,500, he quickly changed his mind. I didn't even know the electric first-gen RAV-4 existed until I saw those 2 out of 2,500 parked right next to each other.

I used to drive one when I read meters for the electric company. Not bad until you got to 35 miles and hour and then the acceleration was terrible. Not bad to zip around town though.

I hope you make another one of these type of videos! Now I’m constantly on a scavenger hunt whenever I’m driving! I’ve seen a B9 Tribeca, Buick Terraza, and Saturn Astra on the road since I saw this video.
I dont know if im the only one who thinks like this, but i really appriciate that doug, after all these years, keeping the same kind of videos with the same great quality. he didnt over complicate things or switch up how he does reveiws after his cheannel blew up. its always great content for both car people and non car people. thank you doug!!
Huh. I have an ‘05 Terraza, didn’t know it was so rare. I wouldn’t exactly call it unreliable though. It has 192k miles and still runs and drives fine.
If you've made it 192K miles in that car and you haven't done a head gasket (or six) and/or a transmission, you are the only one.

I've seen more DeLorean's on the road than Terraza's. In fact, I've never seen one.
@@Josh-179 I think I’ve seen one maybe two DeLoreans on the road. I did however see a Nissan Maxima with a vanity plate that reads “Gluteus”.
Nobody ever mentions the Saturn Astra in these lists. I have a 2008 Astra 2DR XR with a manual and I love it, great little economical car that's fun to drive! Thanks for mentioning it, Doug!
How is it fun to drive? In Europe those Astras are as boring to drive as cars can get, even the OPC version is underwhelming next to the competition
@@turbosydney Compared to everything else I've driven (VW Jetta, Hyundai Sonata, Honda Civic, etc), it's up there on the list. You have to remember that here in North America, there are very few options for people who want an inexpensive, "sporty" coupe, let alone anything in the subcompact range these days. I bought my Astra used and for the price I got it for, it blows all the other options I was considering out of the water in terms of what I got for the money. It definitely won't set records on a track, but I stand by my claim that it's a fun-to-drive (MANUAL!!) daily-driver.
I’ve always found these really interesting as they were unlike any other GM product in North America at the time.

@@MTL911EmergencyPhotography Opel is known for their refinement, at least among people who can look past their boring image. I remember a few comparisons of things like traction in the snow, handling characteristics, long-term reliability, etc. in German car magazines and usually, Opel is at the very top, often beating brands that are considerably more expensive. Not that they haven't sold any duds over the years (the '90s were particularly harsh to them), but overall, they make excellent cars.

It was a natural compliment to the Mazda B series pick-up, which was a re-badged Ranger.
Buddy of mine owned one from ‘16-‘19, it was his first car. Eventually the motor mounts gave out and so it rests in his parents yard as spare parts.
The Saturn Astra’s rarity was the reason the police caught a guy who killed a college student in Illinois.
The Astra in manual transmission form had a hardcore very difficult clutch too! I like sticks & was like damn they didnt americanize the manual like they do on the rest of the cars.

I saw the Subaru Tribeca yesterday.
I remember seeing the Borrego in the showroom wanting one really badly but not at $45k. I also really wanted an Equator when they came out but, Suzuki was gone before I even had a chance to buy one and generally speaking, I really liked the Esteem and Sidekick.

I’m surprised that the Mitsubishi Raider, which is a badge-engineered Dodge Dakota, didn’t make this list. Parallels can be drawn between it and the Suzuki Equator. I’ve seen a handful of them since the mid-2000s, but I would venture a guess that the Raider is even more elusive to find in the wild than the Equator is today.

I saw one parked outside a house in my city recently, had to loop the block because I thought I was hallucinating the Mitsubishi badge on the Dodge. That was the first time I've ever seen one. Also, this is in Canada.
In my previous job, I drove 50,000 miles a year. This meant I saw a lot of strange vehicles. In a single week, I saw both a Suzuki Equator and a Mitsubishi Raider pickup.

That Subaru B9 is pure nostalgic to me. Back in middle school a parent parked their B9 in the same spot daily waiting to pick up their kid. It was blue, I remember looking at it 5 days a week.

Someone has a B9 close to where I live. The front end isn't all that bad nowadays. I don't think it stands out any more than some of the newer crossovers/SUV's from today.

The Astra is pretty common in the UK, has some pretty decent performance versions too and they are still being made here.
I can honestly say I see _all of these_ with the exception of the Navajo in my town every day.
Fun fact: Exclusive to the Terraza was rear independent suspension, borrowed from the Chinese market Buick GL8. It actually did have better ride and handling than all of the others badge engineered GM minivans listed which used solid axle rears.

Great video! I have a 2019 Buick Regal TourX and they made roughly 10,000 of them between '18-'20. Just like the Saturn in the video it's just a rebadged Opel with some plastic cladding. I absolutely love the thing and don't get why more people didn't buy them new.
Another rare normal car is the Mitsubishi Diamante. My family had one from 2006 to 2013, and it was rare then and even rarer now. It was basically Mitsubishi's attempt to make a full size luxury sedan (similar to the Toyota Avalon), but it sold not too well at best. Nowadays I usually see about two to three a year.
I see a Suzuki Equator every once in a while, while delivering on my route, I’ve also seen one in rural Tennessee. B9 Tribeca lives down the road from me and an owner of one works at my gym. I drive a Baja. I like odd cars
the Baja is my number 1 vehicle I want to own. A 2005 Baja Turbo MT is my dream car. it's such a fun looking car I can't help but love its fugliness.
I have an equator and I think I’ve seen about 7 or 8 in the time I’ve owned it. I actually see another one regularly on the Highway going to work and I saw two in one neighborhood in Pittsburgh.
If I’m driving the truck regularly I will literally get someone talking to me at the gas station about it every week or two.
@@fuzzywumble well the lowest production Baja is an 05 Turbo with a Manual, so if you could land one it’d be ideal. Mines an 05 Turbo with an Automatic, 175k miles and all original engine components, however, I’d be lying if I said it ran perfectly.
i think the mitsubishi raider (rebranded dodge dakota) is more rare than the equator. what's also cool about the raider compared to the equator is that it was possible to option it with a v8.

Theres an even rarer HHR SS panel version known amongst HHR people as the "half panel", where only the rear 3/4 window was removed and both rear doors retained windows and functioned normally.

I actually think I see more tribecas with the old grille than the post refresh. That refreshed version is super rare
You probably notice them more because they stick out, however you aren’t entirely wrong, Subaru sold about 77k total units of the Tribeca altogether between both the B9 and the refresh, which means that only about 10k more total refreshed models were sold over 7 additional model years.
Just saw a refreshed Tribeca last night after watching this video. See a lot of them here in MN.
The TriBeCa was a seriously hideous vehicle. When it launched one was on display at a conference center where I was attending a (non-automotive) meeting and I had to look at it daily. Ugh!

Great video Doug but really I’d notice all these in traffic aside from the Astra as none of these were sold here in Australia. The Astra was sold here as the Holden Astra. Would love the Chevy HHR SS panel van it could sit alongside my VZ Holden Commodore Ute.
I've actually seen quite a few Tribecas on the road. Didn't have any idea about that backstory though.
As a Canadian, I had no idea the gas B-Class was never sold in the US since it is a very popular car here

Tha a and b class are horrible to work on since most repairs is engine out basically. Especially w168 for starter motor engine out

I've seen dozens of astra's and f150s here in Florida. I actually love cheap Saturn's hope to get one
Off the top of my head I can remember four people who owned one, including a dude who had the OPC version. They're pretty unreliable.

I used to want a Navajo so bad when I saw them. Always been a car guy, especially FoMoCo. So I wanted one with a lift and mud grips and some yello Hella lights... my aunt had a zr2 blazer and I thought a beefed up Navajo would've been the perfect competition 🤣

Ironically, the Kia Borrego would probably sell quite well these days.
It is body on frame. This is the main difference between it and Telluride. So it may or may not be as successful.
They’re surprisingly over built also. I used to work at a Kia dealer and we had a handful of customers with them, 1 of which was a V8 model. They’re full, boxed frame and stout automatic transmissions.
They do still sell quite well! In Russia and parts of Asia the Borrego is still being sold as the Mohave, like Doug said. It’s been updated with newer tech, air suspension and turbo Diesel engines.

That said even for two years ago I'm kinda surprised you didn't include the 2009 Pontiac Solstice Coupe? Targa tops in 2009 with a production run of only 1266 units, but unless you *really* know what you're looking at, you'd have no idea it was any different than a standard Solstice GXP with a hardtop.
The KIA Mohave is actually quite common where I live, and so is the B9 Tribeca, and each one I saw was smoking like crazy, and the idle was rough, odd car.

I would've imagined that the Mercury Marauder would be on here. Basically a beefed up Mercury Grand Marquis.
All black and chrome wheels give it a much more sinister look easily distinguishable from the average grand marquis
I think most car guys would recognize a Marauder but I would have missed most of these except maybe the Equator. Doug put together a great list of stuff that's obscure even to his audience.

Wow, I saw a Suzuki Equator come through the parking lot at my work here in rural eastern PA. I was super confused because that was the first time I had ever seen a Suzuki pickup. I knew they probably weren't common but didn't know it was one of 8200 in the whole country, pretty interesting! Only saw it once, they might not have been from the area.
A friend of mine here in central PA has an Equator, with the license plate "0 DEG LAT". There was a dealership briefly in Harrisburg, kind of surprising when Suzuki folded...
I really wish Doug would make a follow up video to this, highly interesting stuff in this video.
I've owned 2 Equators in my lifetime solely because they were rare.

Saturn Astra: call them Opels, and you find one in every other bush all over Europe (Vauxhall for the UK, Holden for Australia)
We got it in Mexico as a Chevrolet and there are many still here with 2 liter engine if I'm not wrong
I can confirm. In the UK they are everywhere. That version (the mark H) used to be the default starter company car and is now a for to for many a boy-racer. Easy to mod but rarely done well.

In the EU yes, however the Saturn's did soo poorly in the USA that after only 8 years, parts became unicorn like to replace.
Friend of mine in high school had a Mazda Navajo...he did everything from changing out the rims to pulling every name plate off of his rig, replacing em with Ford badges....he hated that it was a Mazda....lol
waited patiently for Doug to introduce the Suzuki Kizashi. in vain, my heart skipped a beat when he mentioned the last car in this list. shoutout to the Kizashi, a normal, yet rare sedan you'd never notice in traffic from 2010-2013!

Here in Europe everybody knew the Kizashi was destined to failure: it was the first sedan ever sold by Suzuki, a traditional brand for small urban and 4x4 cars, with a single petrol engine that appeared in the middle of the "diesel fever" and recession. Was unfair because car was beatiful and something different.

I've seen a Borrego or two. Don't know why, but they've always stood out a little to me. I've seen several Navajos weirdly. I had a next door neighbor at an apartment complex I lived in about 10 years ago that had an Astra. I've actually seen quite a few Equators as well. That also reminds me of the Mitsubishi Raider which is another rare rebadged version of another truck (the Dodge Durango), which I use to see once every few months.
The original Tribeca though. My dad and I will always recognize those. My dad said when he first saw one "geez, that thing makes the Pontiac Aztec look good".

I also had read that the B9 reminded consumers too much of the word "benign" so that was the reason they scrapped that part of the name.
My friend’s grandparents owned a B9 tribeca with the signature old Subie grille, and I saw a facelift version yesterday. Also seen a Saab 9-4 at an intersection near my house and I was so surprised.
Those Saabs still look great! Was happy to see the 9-5 in Tenet last year. The Subaru flying vag still looks terrible!

The B9 Tribeca almost had a Saab variant! Would’ve been so strange if this went through. I believe it was to be called the 9-6x. There’s a pre-production model on display in Sweden!
I remember that. The Saab version was gonna have the updated front end. I had a friend with a B9. The struts were absolutely shot. He traded it for an Elantra😅
When I was a gas station operator one of the regulars who ran a local videography business used an HHR SS Panel thing as his work truck with his logo and information printed on the large empty areas. I miss working at that gas station I was able to see so many beautiful under appreciated cars
So glad you mentioned the 9-4X. It could have been the vehicle that saved Saab but GM did not have a reason to save it so killing the model essentially killed the brand as well.
That Saturn minivan has to be more rare than the Buick. I don't think I've ever seen the Saturn version.
It is. He got his facts backwards since the Saturn version only sold for 2 model years and the Buick version sold until the end of all the GM minivans (2009).

Normal "rare" car: the 2006-07 Honda Accord Sedan with the 6 speed manual transmision, you can tell it from the regular AT only because the V6 logo is painted red and the wheels are unique to that model ;)
I have one of these! GREAT car. So far, I have only seen one other on the road.
The Accord Hybrid from 05-07 were even rarer

I currently own a Borrego Limited with the V8 and will not part with it until it dies. It has 340hp and is a body on frame, 3 row, 7 passenger tank. We were told by the dealer at the time that they pulled it from the market in the U.S. because the new plant in Alabama that produces the Sorento had been completed and Kia wanted to focus on selling the new Sorento at the same price as the Borrego. I can believe that because the Borrego was sold in Canada until 2011 and is still sold in many countries as the Mojave. If Kia started to import the Borrego again it would sell because people are still buying body on frame SUV's as fast as automakers can build them.
I can just imagine Doug stopping his wife on the way into Costco to snap pics of a Buick Terrazzo, 😂😂

I had a neighbor who had a tribeca suv back in 2008 or so. Even back then, it was fun seeing a big suv from a company that didn't really do suvs back then.

I'm in Virginia and I've seen a few Tribecas. Only a couple had the infamous grille design though, the majority I see seem to be the newer one with the less ugly (but also less eye catching) front end. I believe I remember seeing one of the Buick minivans, when I was younger, just one.
We had the Borrego here in Brazil as the Mohave and it also sold for just one year. Unfortunately, we only had a 3.8 V6 engine instead of the V8.
The Borrego is actually quite common here in Korea as the Mohave. We dont have the Telluride (prbly cuz Hyundai/Kia didnt want competition for the Palisade) tho, which is a shame tbh.
Tons of B9 Tribeca's in New England to a point where I didn't even know it was rare.

For me as an European it’s kinda funny
in Brazil we have that Opel Astra as Chev Vectra, we had Chev Astras with the Opel 2002 G facelift until 2011, the 99 Opel Vectra was sold until 2005, that year we got the Opel Astra with a Vectra badge
Fun fact about the B Class electric, it has Tesla technology with AFAIK an entirely Tesla made drivetrain. Daimler was a Tesla investor and you can see that in the Mercedes switchgear in the early Tesla interiors.
It’s a fairly common car on Norwegian roads, maybe the most common B Class variant of that age, and had decent specs when new with the big downside being no DC fast charging.
Fun fact on top of this, i forget how much, but the Toyota RAV4 EV also had Tesla stuff in it
