I think when Blondie performed this song back in the day. It surprised a lot of people. Blondie was rapping before rapping was really a thing.

Real? You mean before it became a mainstream thing. Rap music was around before Blondie even became a band in 1974. "Rapture" was released in January 1981. Before "Rapture," the Sugarhill Gang had the first notable Top 40 rap hit with "Rappers Delight"- released in September 1979 using Chic's "Good Times" bassline. Rap music had been around since since 1973 & introduced by DJ Kool Herc. Blondie capitalized on the Rap scene that had artist such as Kurtis Blow, Spoonie Gee & King Tim III to name a few who rapping before Blondie. Chris Stein & Deborah Harry were friends with Fab 5 Freddy who introduced Rap to Blondie in 1978 at a live show.

    CALL ME
    THE TIDE IS HIGH
    and ONE WAY OR ANOTHER,
are 3 great songs by Blondie. Two of them really rock, and the other is a leisurely day in the Caribbean, just lying in the sun with the waves washing your feet and sipping your favorite drink. Enjoy

The first rap crossover song of any kind in the United States was "Rappers Delight" by The Sugarhill Gang released in September 1979. The song reached #36 in the Billboard Top 40. Rapture, by Blondie, was released in January 1979 & it was the first song to include rap that reached #1 in the Billboard Top 40.

🇨🇦 Rapture was released in 1980, before any of these so called 'Rap' artists were born !
I am telling you, Boomers did it all, nothing today is really new !

The album Autoamerican that Rapture is on was released in November 1980, but the song/single Rapture was released in January 1981. And Chris Stein & Deborah Harry were introduced to Rap music, which had been around since 1973, by their friend Fab 5 Freddy in 1978 at a live show. Of course, the band wrote Rapture sometime soon afterwards.

..."Class of 76"...This was the 1st rap song to ever reach the top of the charts...the black guy in the White tux was a tribute to a 1920's performer...In NY Blondie hung with street rappers, punkers, the disco crowd and all types of music and of course and this song has a little of all...notice the Rap Lyrics make no sense...pure punk during a disco rap song...

Blondie is the name of the band. Debbie Harry is the name of the lead singer.
One of the hip hop pioneers Fab Five Freddy is spray painting graffiti in the music video. And that is the famous street artist Jean Michel Basquiat in the music video djing on the turntable. He was Madonna's boyfriend in late 82 after her debut single Everybody was released. They broke up because of his drug addiction. He died of a drug overdose in 88 when he was only 25 years old. Keith Haring the famous pop artist was Madonna's roommate and friend in 82. He died of AIDS in 90. Both of them were very talented and were gone too soon.
React to their songs Atomic, One Way Or Another, Touched By Your Presence Dear, Hanging On The Telephone, The Tide Is High and Call Me please. And react to Debbie Harry's solo song French Kissing In The USA please.

Schnell, Blondie was a HUGE group in the late 70’s and early 80’s and beyond. They have a wide array of music and try Heart of Glass for a more typical Blondie song. They have a big catalog. This song was the first Rap based song to go to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart. It opened a lot of doors as Blondie was huge at the time.
I’m going to recommend a duo that I don’t see in your catalog, and a specific song to get you started. I think you mentioned liking oldies, well the 1970’s qualifies, though for me it was just my music. The duo was the brother and sister act, Carpenters (Karen & Richard). The song is Rainy Days and Mondays. It’s a showcase of what they did and and an excellent example IMHO. I hope you enjoy it and want to hear more, there’s a lot more.
I noticed late that you’re a singer. Then I have to add, I don’t know if you know, Karen is one of the if not the best female vocalists of all time. Not hyperbole.

Isn't schnell German for quickl? Hurry up? or fast? Maybe, quicky? wOw, I like that name. Wicked cool. I LOVE Blondie. Loved them then. Still lovin em today. Debbie Harry was my first teenage crush, along with Agnetha (the blonde in the 1970's Swedish Supergroup: ABBA). I have always been a sucker for blondes. Shoutout from this old, longhaired, Southern Rebel in Gatlinburg Tennessee. Peace and love. See ya on the next. Later

Rap was part of the American culture since 1973, but it was not introduced to the mainstream Top 40 listening audience until 1979. In 1979, The Sugarhill Gang used the bassline to Chic's #1 Top 40 hit, "Good Times" to write & release "Rapper's Delight" in September 1979. The song reached #36 in the Billboard Top 40. It was also a club hit in the dance clubs & #1 in Canada. Even with Blondie's "Rapture" single being a #1 hit in 1981, Rap music did not completely submerge itself into mainstream America until Run DMC & Aerosmith collaborated on "Walk This Way" in 1986.

i liked your initial reaction, nothing special not to catchy. but your reaction changed. to rap was cool. her band was tearing up the charts and the clubs with what was called new wave punk rock. she broke alot of barriers and this song was a couple of years before the Compton scene went mainstream with NWA and EZ and the really hard rappers.she was the first white and the first female rapper and the rest was history! Debra Harry and Blondie were elected to the rock n roll hall of fame in 2006. now you can see why!

    • @billw715
      @billw715 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@SubwaySweden I'd say Debbie Harry is not from a time, at least where she is from (the United States) & more than likely in most of parts of the world, that "a woman could get famous by being a bit edgy and showing skin." To say this is to limit & discount her as a musician, singer & songwriter.
In addition, Blondie is the name of the band & not the name of the singer. This is not a solo project or a singer with a backing band. Plus, in the 1970s & early 1980s, there was no internet available in households. Music television started in August 1981 & was subscription based & not available either through out most of the United States for years & years.
So, people who bought music back in the day, bought music primarily by hearing what was on the radio without knowing what the artists looked like to know that that one was even "a bit edgy and showing skin.
