What a find! By chance I found this video, and lo and behold, I found that these items are made by my grandniece's husband! He started making them for his wife (my grandniece) who is an artist. She makes tiny watercolors (size of a penny and slightly larger). The minute I saw this video I was just sure of the maker, so I did check the Etsy site to confirm. I'm just delighted that Shawn sent them to you! Now I must let them know I found this! While we have yet to meet, (they are in Kansas, I'm in Pennsylvania), I am very excited for my relatives.
I’ve ordered from this shop and everything was packaged just as nicely for me too. I use my mini altoids tin pallet all the time 😍 I love that it’s so compact but can still fit lots of colors ❤️ and the expander mixing area is genius!
Those are super cute! Thanks for sharing these. I have enough palettes but there's something about those little mint palettes getting repurposed for watercolor that makes me want more and more. I really love those flat palette inserts, however. Genius!
The last altoid tin I had was bumpy on the lid, and if he's selling a lot of these, he's probably not repurposing them, but buying the tins in bulk. Another channel made some inserts 3D printed for their own use, and did pour painting on the lids. But people wanted them so she started to make a bunch of them, offered plain black tin box as well as the pretty pour painted lids. I got one of each back in 2020. came with the 15 wells and a mixing pallette. Studio of MM I think was the channel. If he sells the inserts alone, and you have an empty tin, maybe you could avoid buying the tin that way.
I think this is an awesome idea. His prices also seem real reasonable for the convenience of not having the small pans move around etc. Thanks Lindsay and hats off to Shawn for sending you those.
Great to see you Lyndsey bless you , * Wonderful educational and creative invention Congrats to Shaun on new business venture and very appreciated to know these compact paint tins an inserts are able to help alot of artists who like traveling to paint :) * I love the added touch of dollar tree magnetic clip you added very helpful !
I am absolutely OBSESSED with tiny palettes! I've amassed quite a collection and I'm glad to know I'm not alone in my obsession. I ordered several from Shawn and he also did a custom tray for me to fit inside one of his larger tins. He's very nice and very professional and I will definitely be ordering again!
Cover it with a few layers of the cheap polyester felt sheets. I did that with one of the foam pieces I got with a kit - the wool tries to felt to the poly stuff, but doesn't stick as much as a wool felt cover (like... woolbuddies I think is the brand name?).
I used altoids tins with plastic 1/4 pans and in one I have watercolors and the other I put Derwent Inktense by cutting a small chunk off of the block and putting it in the 1/4 pans. I used some of the adhesive magnet sheets you can get at Dollarama on the bottom of the pans to keep them in place in the tin, but this allows you to change out the pans if you want to change the colors. Each tin holds up to 15 1/4 pans and by using the magnets on the bottom I can switch out colors easily, depending on what I am doing!! It is so compact that the tin, one or two waterbrushes and a small sketchbook fit easily in the inside pocket of my jean jacket, or a side pocket of my purse so is easy to take with you. I find it nice when at my granddaughters hockey games etc!!! Also I glued some white plastic from other packaging into the lid to give a mixing area and that works quite well too!!
I found a Bob Ross, Happy Little Tree Mints box the size of an Altoid box. The public library, where I worked, used their 3D printer to make me a 10 well palette which I use for traveling. The wells are not quite as large as full pans but large enough to put an inch sized flat brush in them. I love it.
I really like the little Altroids and the 3D paint pans. I need to talk to my son, he has a 3D printer. Those are are really great for on the go too! Great video Lindsay, Thanks!❤
Magic eraser is great for getting the stain off the resin, and as I have found, watercolor beads up on unfinished PLA (what Shawn uses). I picked up the the Large Watercolor to Go set he sells, which came with a nice collection of DaVinci paints. I love the set, and have been having fun with it.... but... Now, this is not a Shawn's 3D prints problem, it's a Mitz and her ADHD problem. For me, the more I have to do before I can start "doing the thing"... the less I am to actually to whatever thing. And for the set, the problem comes in getting the trays out of the tin, something that for me has been a bit of a fiddly thing. Today, as I saw the link for this video, I had an idea for an easy pull "handle"... packing tape. So while I was watching, I was also adding folded tape handles to all three of the shallow trays... and as I type, I realize I only really needed to add it to the one on the bottom (which has four DaVinci colors I bought elsewhere), since I tend to pull all of them out to work. Still, it's a quick fix to the only thing that I didn't like about the kit, and as I said... it's a "me" problem, not the set itself. There are a number of fun 3D print art supply shops on Etsy if you have a few hours to spare for browsing. FabricationFactoryCo has a few items that keep drawing me, but I haven't purchased from them (yet), but their nested style inserts are intriguing. Then there is my favorite shop: ArtstoEmbers. I think I have... five palettes from them, plus a few extra inserts. And this doesn't include, for those (like me) who have 3D printers, all the files wandering about the internet. I've even created a few myself for the "mini/sample" pans that are even smaller than the quarter pans, but it's still in the "tweaking" stages... no, don't look at the multiple prints I've made and have tucked into kits, those are still in the testing phase... honest. They are cute and tiny... but so is the mixing space, damnit. =grin=
Very cool little travel sets! Makes me want to start painting again. Just watched one of your oil pastel videos, I will definitely give it a try when I have a little more time in the next week or two.
You can add little ribbon tabs to the mixing trays and pallettes. Just cut some ribbon long enough to stick up the side from under the tray, fold in half and either glue on the back, or use double sided tape. Drop into the tin and it's easy to pull the trays out as needed. You can add an elastic loop to the outside of the tin yo hold your water brush, too.
Oh wow, those look super nice and handy. Really like all the customizations that could be done, especially for the mixing trays. Yup, very nice. Makes me want to take up plein air painting just so I could use them (and that magnet clip - great idea!).
OH!!!! Michaels (and probably lots of other places) sell metal tins with a plastic insert to hold a gift card. You could totally get one of those, and some of these inserts, and give the gift of the gift card AND a travel paint pallet. Maybe put some of the paints you have and really like in it, throw in a brush, to get them started.
This was so great!! It also reminded me that I had some thin Altoid type tins and some silicone mini ice cube trays that I’d been meaning to cut apart and fill with watercolors for sets to travel with (40 colors each). So I’ve spent several days doing just that and having a blast!! They work so well with a water brush. I now have Shin Han PWC, White Knights and am prepping my Van Gogh to do next. Surprisingly in such small amounts the White Knights set up quite well, even tho I live in a humid climate. Yay! When I have used my supplies up, I’ll check out Shawn’s! Will try to attach a pic, they are so cute. Thanks for providing me several hours entertainment! I love making palettes...😂
WoW Ive already checked out the site I’ll be sure to get some. Thank you for reviewing them or I never would have known about these items, Shirl from Australia
I’ve ordered from this store before and the products are great!!!! Love that he makes inserts you can purchase separately so I can use my own tins and add layers!
Not surprised... though I think they might use resin printers rather than the FDM style Shawn uses. I believe that full denture sets can be printed that way, though of course they use a very specific type of resin.

Nice! Thanks for showing these, Lindsay. This guy's prints are very ingenious.
They are really cool! Thanks for stopping by, Steve!
You sure got a mini watercolor pallet fix today. They are adorable. Also like the mixing pallets. Thanks for sharing.
That foam packaging is also good for a base for needle felting. I’ve been wanting to find a large and thick piece for this purpose.
