    Stumbled across this video and glad I did. You did such a fantastic job with this. Looks absolutely amazing. Really loved the movie too. Interesting techniques of welding the resin pieces together as well as the tip with baking soda and superglue. Very cool. Gonna search for an orinthopter stl file now. Thanks for sharing.

      Thanks! The place where I got my model, Loot Studios, is linked in the description. They do monthly subscriptions, and you can buy previous months, but I don't know the cost. I believe the Ornithopter model was in the "Sandy Dunes of Lutba (Sci-fi) (Mar/22)" collection.
      If you find another source for an ornithopter please let me know!

    That's a very nice build of a unique model aircraft! It really is amazing what 3D Printing is doing for the hobby!
    True story: I was nine years old in 1969, and I was at the local Target store looking for a model kit to build. An older gentleman (and by "older," I mean like my age, now) commented to me that in "his day," if you wanted a model plane, you carved it out of solid bass or balsa wood using templates, and what I was doing wasn't "really" model building. Flash forward to a few years ago, and I was in a hobby shop where a demonstration of 3D Printing was being done. A couple of ten year olds were watching it, and I couldn't resist telling them that in "my day," if you wanted to build a model plane, you got yourself an injection molded kit from the shelf . . . .
    As for me, I'm too young to try carving a traditional solid model, and too old to learn how to write code to make a 3D Printed one. So for now, I'll stick with injection molded kits.
    Again, good job on your ornithopter! Thanks for posting this.

    • @StudioDave
      @StudioDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      yeah, I'd be lost if I had to carve anything :)
      As for 3D printing tho, it is pretty easy. No coding required. Just download an existing 3D file, and its almost drag/drop to make a printer specific file, then hit the print button.
      It does get a whole lot more complex if you are going to design your own objects to print, but for existing models its dead easy. Even I can do it!

      @@StudioDave Ah. Shows what I know. But then again, I have yet to buy a Dremel Tool, and I've been building plastic models since I was six. (Though I do have an airbrush.) That said, I may just have to do a bit more research into getting a 3D Printer. Maybe this old dog can learn a new trick or two, after all . . . .

    Amazing work, Dave. I know what you mean about the glass canopy options... I've had a few kit cars where I've had to add front door windows by using clear plastic (the sort you would get in some packaging) as the kits don't come with them. I also have a Millennium Falcon with a full clear piece for the front of the cockpit or an option for the frame but no glass. It's frustrating because I hate painting those fiddly bits, but as you say... Photoshop is your friend :)

    • @StudioDave
      @StudioDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Ben!
      I have not built a lot of models, but what experience I have says glass is a major hassle. I also note that watching BTS videos on how Hollywood VFX are done, they almost always start with "remove the windows", and end with 'add back the reflections in post". If it's good enough for Hollywood, it's good enough for me :)

      Crazing on clear plastic parts is a beast to deal with and avoid, if you're not thinking about it. That said, PVA works a treat for avoiding the issues that CA glues will, pretty consistently, cause, due to their inherent chemistry.

    I don't know if anyone else has mentioned this but Leonardi Da Vinci designed an ornithopter so it well predates Dune or any 20th century designs.
    It's doubtful he built and tested one. He was more of a concept guy; he began tons of projects but didn't finish them. Also, any time anyone's tried to copy Nature exactly it sort of blows up in their faces.
    Every plane I've seen that's tried to beat its wings like an insect has never worked out! There's famous footage of ones of these concept planes (circa 1912-1914?) literally shaking itself to pieces! It's a good thing the inventor didn't try to catapult the thing or fly off a cliff! Some knuckleheads did that with their bikes (driving off cliff) while trying to beat wings strapped to their arms quickly enough to fly!

    • @StudioDave
      @StudioDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspected DaVinci may have tried this but wasn't sure. I know he came up with some wacky theories about how to achieve flight like this. Thanks for the history lesson.

  • @yalborap

    Really solid build video. I'd love to hear more about your experiences with 3D printed assets from the toy photography perspective. Been considering getting into the whole 3D printer scene, but I've got a lot of concerns about the visual quality when as a photographer I'm inherently going to be right up on the figure.

    • @StudioDave
      @StudioDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Heya!
      When it comes to 3D printing and accessories I feel it comes down to two aspects, how you finish and paint up the model, and how you light it.
      I have both a filament printer, and a resin printer. By far the best quality from a detail perspective is the resin... the models simply have a lot more detail. However regardless of which method you choose, the models can end up having layer lines. Not all prints have them (and I am not 100% sure why some do and some don't - not experienced enough yet). Most figures also come with a bunch of supports that are required to support the model while it is being printed. There are a variety of ways to clean those up, but how well its done has a huge effect on the quality of the final image. Also depending on how you light the figure can hide any lingering layer lines (also how you orientate the model when you print can mask the lines by making them part of the figures textures... layer lines are a lot more problematic with filament printers)
      Of course how well you paint them has an effect on the final outcome. I do a fair amount of cleanup in Photoshop on all my images, both 3D printed or store bought toys, and for the 3D ones, most of the photoshop is fixing my poor painting skills.
      Also, the bigger the print, the better the quality is going to be. Also the higher resolution print the better the quality. If you get all those right the look in front of the camera can be as good as many action figures available on the market - certainly as good as Marvel Legends or the Black Series.
      I have a couple videos early on in my channels history that cover how I made a couple images with 3D printed models, this is one with Darkwing Duck: th-cam.com/video/jVyFGXVHcxk/w-d-xo.html, the other is the Blade diorama: th-cam.com/video/QMMdLsTDaZk/w-d-xo.html
      So, get a high resolution (4K or so these days) resin printer, and be diligent with painting and cleanup, and one can have a great deal of success mixing 3D models into ones toy photography.
      Hope this helps!

    What would make a tonne of difference would be if you used different colours for different materials. There also seems to be little or no attempt at bringing out depth or shadow in the model, I'd try using a variety of washes to highlight the different textures. You could also cut down some plexiglass and add windows to that canopy. Still, it's a fair effort. I look forward to seeing more of your work.

    • @StudioDave
      @StudioDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I debated that. However I build my models to eventually be put in front of a camera with lights etc. that would bring out the depth. And I wasn;t sure if I wanted to make everything different colours or not. Since its easier to add colours in Photoshop than remove them, I decided to go with a simpler paint job and make any adjustments in post.

Put your camera on fast shutter mode and keep taking shots throughout the blow process. May take a couple tries to get it right.
      Then take the wires out in Photoshop.

    Great results, Dave! By chance, are you based in Ontario (Canada)?
    Also, I was wondering about the semantics at play with a helicopter design inspired by a Dragonfly. Instead of "Ornithopter" (rooted in "Ornithology" - the study of birds), shouldn't this vehicle be called an "ENTOMOPTER" (rooted in "Entomology" - the study of insects)? 🤔

    • @StudioDave
      @StudioDave  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Heya. I was born and raised in Ontario, but moved to North Carolina for work.
      I didn't come up with the name Ornithopter. That came from Frank Herbert (well, he wrote Dune, so I presume he also came up with the name - I just know it from the book). You do make a valid point tho. As a fellow pendant I applaud your questioning the name :)

    • @td1559

      IIRC the book ornithopters were a bit more bird like, I think Villeneuve chose the dragonfly design for the recent movie because it was one of the designs the production team came up with where he could easily see how to make scenes with it in feel real.
