From Leo: Tip for you buddy. I put my end nippers in a one gallon zipper plastic bag and use them inside it.
Push it so that the fret pokes a hole. and then trim the end. Keep reusing the same hole as much as possible. All the trimmings stay in the bag instead of flying in your face and all over the shop. Hope that helps, cheers.
This, all day long. I have never done any guitar work, but I use this same trick whenever I have to cut screws, pins, or other small metal parts!

Great video. One of the best on guitar maintenence that I have watched. Previously I watched some on fret levelling and fret dressing that inspired me to do my own repairs. This has had similar effect and showed me that I don't need too many expensive tools like fret press and Sansauri saws to do the job required. After watching this I definitely will try and replace that duff fret that I ruined when I got over enthusiastic with my fret dressing. Thanks

Very good. I have a 1971 Gibson SB 400 bass guitar that is going to get the full treatment using this video as a guide. Got it in 1972 when I was 11 yrs old. 🙂
A most enjoyable tutorial, even with headphones.
Two things I do; I use archery bowstring wax on the fretboard along the new frets to keep the glue off the fretboard & put painters tape on my Radius block to keep its face clean.

I have a 1996 Squier Stratocaster which has never had a refret. It hasn't presented with major ssues but the frets are very flat on top and very low. The nut is also the original nut and I'm considering replacing it with bone, but I know that once I refret it I'll need to do it again or shim the nut. Not sure what I'll do yet but this vid has been helpful.

Dave thank you so much for the tutorial. I have managed 3 refret jobs on my own partly because you say I can do it.. If you happen to do another of these could you explain fret tang width and how to thin down the tangs OR widen the slots slightly to prevent back bow? It seems that .023 is the standard width on what Philadelphia sells and some necks have slots that are a bit tight. May be a good cautionary approach for dumb asses like me that create back bow and have to redo the fret job :-) You are doing a good thing online!!!

Hey Dave! great video, I have a question, was wondering if you could help me, I have a fender american strat guitar with a maple neck, I guess the maple is finished beacuse it has a shine on it and it is probably lacquered or something, I have no clue what is the finish although I would love to find out anyways I was wondering on how to go about cleaning it without damaging the wood or the finish on it, is a damp rag ok? Also the frets have some corrosion on them so if you can tell me what sand paper grit to use for removing it without removing too much material off the metal I'll be glad, thanks!
You could try the fret rocker on all the brand new frets once they've been seated in the slots and you might not need to take any material off your new frets.Not likely but you never know.

Hi Dave, Thanks for advice about wetting the fret board, it worked a treat 👌 What made getting some of the lower end frets in, even worse, was the last 4 frets of the finger board has an unsupported section, i.e. a gap between that, and the sound box, so had to be a bit careful packing it up to stop it springing about. Removing the neck was not option in this case, as I'm in the process of restoring what I think is, 1931/32 Epiphone Archtop.

i have no clue about guitars, but my geometry knowledge tells me its the same radius (not concetric)
Thank you Dave! What would you do with a Gibson that has the binding along the neck? I presume one would have to dig into it, but then replace it somehow... but the process is all a mystery to me. Someday my LPS will need someone like you.
There's a special tool called a tang nipper that undercuts the fret ends. Stew Mac at one point, took a Klein nibbler and made slight modifications to it, and sold it for like $1900 or something.
How wet would you get the fret board to prevent chipping?
What are “those things” that you polish frets with?Are they different Grit? Get them at the hardware store?
These necks are actually really nice. I bought a $80 squier with this neck on it to scallop, but I couldn't bring myself to do it because it feels so good. Dave, what radius is this fret board? I have the same neck and I dont have a radius gauge so im just curious. I just put a wilkinson trem and new pickups in my bullet and it sounds/plays better than my MIM strat.

hey, if the frets are pre-radiused do I need to level-radius them again? I bought a fender new ones that said that are already pre-radiused to 9.5.
I enjoy the sound of the fret end filing, but not with the block, with the hand file. The sound is fairly musical.
You can clean the sandpaper with a wire brush a couple of times when it’s clogged.
Do you do anything with the truss rod before starting?
If I change my fret guage from 2.2mm to jumbo size (2.9mm) will it badly affect my tone???

What if you put one edge of the fret flush on one side and then you don't have to trim one side

Would you re-fret my Warwick? It’s a 98 thumb neck through. The brass wire has totally deteriorated and I want to go with whatever you recommend for it. I’m a heavy handed player.

Forgive me if I'm mistaken, but it looked like you used a 7.25 inch radius block on a 9.5 inch fingerboard. Just wondering why if you actually did do that. Again just what I thought I saw.

As much as I enjoy and appreciate every video that Dave shares with us, I cannot get it why anybody would bother with spending pile of money refretting cheap, crappy Squire. If one lives in Canada (which is what I assume), go to the closest L&McQ store, put that money down and order new, decent quality guitar with proper fretwork already done at the factory. Here is the hint: There is this guy named *Robert Godin*. Guitars he makes are not bad to say the least. They are all 100% Made in Canada, out of Canadian grown native woods, with the exception of Rosewood and Richlite fretboards (Richlite, composite of wood and some man made "goo" can be found on top end Godin's guitars) BTW... Swedes invented that thing some 40+ years ago and make their super stable *H* necks + fretboards out of it ever since. There are a few models assembled in New Hampshire, USA out of parts made in Godin's factories located in Quebec. That's as far as I know (I own 4 Godins so far, and it doesn't look like this is the end of my *Godin* guitars acquisition). I would have to be declared "mentally unstable", to put it mildly, If I ever spend my money on something that name starts with letter "S" and is made who knows where, out of who knows what. Check this one out: This is my Canadian/Quebec made, US/New Hampshire assembled equivalent of that overpriced and overrated MIM or some other unmentionable country Strat:

Curious as to why when you “clamp and then glue” those fret ends that pop up why you don’t “glue them clamp” ? I assume for me I might put to much glue in and when clamping it’d squirt onto the fretboard or on the neck , but even a dumbass like myself would be able to figure a way to get dried glue off of a neck or fret board …and I imagine since your the one giving the tutorial how to (meaning have a lot of trial and error /expertise) you’d be more precise with the amount of glue you’d drip into the fret ends so it wouldnt make much if any mess… is there another reason to clamp first then Drip the glue in that I don’t know about cause I’m a dumbass?

Oh, man... Really wish I lived in the US, because the shipping and import fees to Scandinavia (I'm in Sweden) are just ridiculous from the likes of StewMac. They do have European distribution, but they don't keep a complete stock, so I can never find the stuff I'm looking for (in this case I'm looking for a leveling beam and a fretkisser - none of which are available here).

Dave's World of Fun Stuff $300 would get a great used/new Squier Classic Vibe. I love old Fender guitars. Classic Vibes are a bang for the buck. Still, great job on the neck Dave! You have the passion we all love.
Nick DeVriese Can't buy a new Classic Vibe for 300 bucks. At least not here in Canada. I think they go for around 450 up here.
@Nick DeVriese Classic Vibes have their own problems. The biggest one is the useless pickups that ruin what could be a great guitar. However I agree that Squier do have great fretboards even on their Affinity Range. However I have bought cheaper guitars and fallen for them so much that I have done things like pickup replacement and fret levelling to make them even better. Cheap guitars can be awesome with some investment and tweaking.

You should always use glue. The tone is better and that is not a joke. It fills all the gaps under the frets and therefore resonating transfer is greater.
