Jacob is probably one of the most versatile bass fisherman today. Ffs or old school, he gets it done every time. You can't deny that.
Best of all time!
Xyz
Everyone does a “Top 5 baits for month X” but not everyone breaks down the why and where. Awesome video
Preciate the tips bro. I was the guy at the boat ramp on the final day of the lake conroe tournament that didnt have a sharpie... like i said, thanks for all the tips!
Fifty years ago it was red rattle traps the last week in February at Toledo Bend. Some great memories.😎❤️🎣👍
Really enjoy the videos Jacob. The longer and more in depth/ talking videos really help me get a better visual on what to throw this time of year
Thanks Jacob for your time you give us to teach you are appreciated! 👍
Nice breakdown dude!! I think when guys go over there baits of the month. Line size always gets skipped over. I appreciate you talking about line size for your baits. Very important and helpful. Thanks JW!
Hey J-dub! I'm an avid fan of yours whether on the Tour or your channel. Im totally amazed by the detail (juice) that you share with us based on your actual on water performances. Theres a lot of great online experts out there but no one like you. I belive a large component of being a successful angler, is your casting ability, which you excel at. Thanks a lot!
Thank you for the tips. I always appreciate the in-depth look at your rod reel in line size when fishing them as well.
I definitely give you props for making that statement. 👍 about not having to use the ffs. Wow, not to many anglers say that.
I love these videos, if could you do a tva lake like pickwick or Kentucky for march that would be awesome
Free rig comment; ... I experimented with free rigging a wacky worm last season ... from shallow, to docks to 6 to 10 foot water. I was pleasantly surprised with the response I got from the fish compared to my buddy fishing a weighted wacky worm. Like you, ... I will be experimenting more with it in 2025.
I’m glad you said something about slowing down. I’ve caught more fish on moving baits in the winter after using my Abu Revo 5:4:1 baitcaster. Cranks, paddle tails and spinnerbaits.
Thanks Jake awesome tips for February will do for sure 👍🏻
I've been Biwa rigging/midstrolling for over 10 years. I fished Biwa back in the day and learned about it there, the Fish Arrow Flash J was the bait back then. You're absolutely right that you don't have to have ffs for it. It was my cleanup bait for specific offshore spots like ledges, brushpiles, humps, points, etc and for going back through timber, stumps and grass. I was bummed when you crushed them on G-Ville with it and showed the world that technique. On the free rig, you can use a bobber stop to control the distance of separation between the weight and bait. Specifically for free rigging with casting gear, I prefer the DoLive Beaver over the Bronco only because of the salt content used for weighting specific parts of the bait. It makes it so that once the weight stops pulling it falls perfectly horizontal with a little quiver kinda like a senko and like a real crawdad after they dart off. So after the initial drop, I can give it a couple quick pops to get separation and let it settle back down to the bottom like a real craw. Outside of that specific use, I prefer the Bronco Bug because of size, durability, and colors. If the Bronco would fall horizontal like that with no weight pulling it down, it would be the deal. Especially with those forward facing side legs. I also like pegging punch skirts with poly hubs to the hook when free rigging. Gives it a bigger profile and is kind of like free rigging a jig. Outside of punching through cover, the free rig has pretty much replaced my t-rigs. Even for punching, outside of the power shot, if I do t-rig I almost exclusively use the JungleGym Black Bean sinker or the Spro version of it, instead of a bullet sinker. It gets through grass/cover better due to most of the position of where the most of the weight is located. I've even switched to using them or dropshot weights for c-rigs too.
Appreciate you shinning a light on lake Hartwell. It’s a beautiful place, but I’m new to lake/reservoir fishing and it’s tough. I caught a 4 last week and had my PB hooked up but it threw my lipless crank. I was throwing the Duke from 6th Sense but since have tied on the new Berkley Jack.
We catch huge blue cats in that area of Big Beaver this time of year.
Jdub! My 9 yr olds name is JW, goes by Dub. Me and my boy learning a lot on forward, and these type longer format videos are great, really appreciate the time and effort you put into it. Glidewise, a Clutch eco is tuff to beat. God Bless and thanks for all the info and go seine'm this weekend.
Can’t wait to take all this solid advice to the lake!… still frozen here in PA but like you said always learning :) looking forward to Harris Chain, go crush them brother!
One of your best Jacob. Appreciate it.
Thank you again
I'm going to try at least 3 of them this weekend down here in Florida
Would love a video on reels, why the gear ratios matter, what makes one better than the other, which reels for which techniques and why etc
I'd love to see you come back up north next year and do a blade bait video
Thanks for the info Jacob. My free rig choice is the Janitor on a Roboworm ReBarb hook 12lb flourcarbon 3/16 or 1/4 or 3/8 round eye tungsten free rig weight..
Biggs makes a great glide!! Deadly
Hartwell is my home body of water and it’s Feb I will be trying this this weekend thanks Wheeler!!
Thanks , great video. see ya out on the lake
I want to love the free rig everywhere but I have to say it works best on docks for me. With the right bait I feel it's just as effective as a wacky but you can cover water faster.
I toss the same crawfish ok pattern on a free rig on the outskirts of grass lines, as yoh said I think the fluttering action really pulls them out of the cover, by log jams is great to. At least up here in Michigan
Good luck at the next tournament!!
Hey Jacob, I'm here in Austria also going for Duckett rods !!!
Not sure it's sneaky, but Gan Craft jointed claw 178 has been a favorite of mine for years, and the Raid osakana slide 170
They are killing it right now at Sharon Harris i know that was one your favorite lakes on mlf
Couldn’t even wait till the end of February
Clutch is the only glide bait company you need. Shout out Josh over at clutch.
First gen jaw dropper jig head with a BLT Ned or Baby z too..Jerkbait. Draggin a worm. Draggin a silent lipess and bouncing it off the bottom on chunk rocks
I feel like an old-school tube would be a great bait to throw on that free rig. That gliding action is very prevalent with a tube.
Free rig with a mini lizard style bait, it’s a killer on pressured fisheries
Big Game Custom Glide is my favorite glide.
River2Sea makes a great glide
Free rig is awesome. I find if you use a wider bait for a glide down slower is bad ass ding hay boy lol.
Well bro 2 of the popular glides right now are the clutch OG an darter and of course the trick shads. Trick shad have recently come out w a 5" that's pretty cool.
Jacob little tip on your free rig, keep in mind and we’ll get hung a little bit more than your standard Texas. So if you’re in heavy brush, I probably would stick with Texas. Good luck.
What type of jig head do you use on the 2.5 inch mayor?
Freerig with the freeloader killer
Man I’ve been throwing a jig head minnow since I started bass fishing. It’s called jig head and a sassy shad! For all you that don’t know look it up!
Should i throw a glide after a cold front when it starts getting warmer?
Jacob is the goat 🐐
Free rig with a Geecrack Bellows Gill. Run 2 lines and and a swivel. 12” & 16”.
Bronco on the shakey is money but I may have to try the free rig
Glad you did well at Conroe. I was really surprised when you pulled your boat out right next to me.
Thanks Jacob dont sleep on a swimbait on a wobble head.❤
Great info bud. Question do you run the same jig head on a freeloader as the minnow? Since the freeloader is a thicker bait.
What baits should I use for NC waters
Have C-MAP but cannot figure out how you have the creek channel and creek run-ins blue highlighted! Hds vs Pro?
I have a hds carbon with c map .My mapping dont show the creek channels like his.lol
Been having trouble getting the mooch minnow to screw onto the vmc screwlock heads any tips? It’s almost as the bait is too elastic for the screw to really penetrate it
Do you recommend a flat banger from Googan squad red and black one crankbait this time of the year ??
Everyone talks about shaking a minnow but nobody physically shows people how to do it and talk em through it and who better than jdub
What's up wheeler....used a free rig once weight was giving me issue what weight are u using ?
understand you are in season, so unlikely youll get to this but your next stop is harris and i live about an hour away.. was there any plans of a meet and greet or something along those lines?
Is clear water needed for glides?
Was this your Lake Conroe setups?
On the free rig vs Texas rig, could you just go down to a 1/8 oz bullet weight and get a similar slow fall?
No, the worm weight has more friction against the line. The tungsten hoop-style weight travels through the water differently because of the size and shape.
I have been using the minnow on jig head for years and have never used ffs.
Sneaky Pete Glide
I hope the 2.0 rods last longer than the original jw rod. I have blew to many of those rods up within one year
Jacob I when yesterday a lot of buck bass pulled up shallow do you think they mite be getting ready to spawn this early middle Tennessee highland reservoir. Waster was 57 in the river
Sounds like it water temps are right .watch for the full moon.Tight lines!!!
When u talked about traps u I didn't hear u mention a 1/4 oz trap which is deadly rightnow
That’s a good point!
What is your gear the ratio for the mayor
How shallow can I fish the Freeloader??
Is that your new Line of fishing gear from Magellan?
man i have a question on something i dont hear addressed alot. does anyone else have issues on getting snagged on braid to leader and when you have to break off your line always breaks at the leader knot ? i use alot of exposed jighead hooks get snagged fair amount. kinda annoying to retie leader knots on the water.
When i break off 95% of the time it breaks at the bait.20# braid 12 or 14# fluro.improved alberto knot.
Do you snell the free rig?
@@KoryKistner-ow7ko I don’t personally
Jacob, it doesn’t appear you are a fan of a loop knot for the minnow?
@@WIDEawake419 so I didn’t want that much action on them at Conroe so I tied directly to the line tie
@@WheelerFishing thanks man
Dude your only bait a minnow type bait for forward facing sonar
Or you could use the Tiny 7
Im too far north to fish and too fsr soouth to icefish
