I was interested in science from around the time I was leaving grade school and entering middle school (junior high school). I was far away from Camille’s landfall. We did get huge flooding rain and I wanted to learn everything I could about hurricanes. That remained a priority through high school graduation. I enlisted in the military to become a meteorologist, but the USAF had other ideas and changed my career field. Our recent history of space flight provided information to expand our knowledge base by 300-500% in just a few years. That was about a half century ago plus a few more years. In high school, we covered the recent “hurricane” that hit the river delta of India and the (newly renamed) Bangladesh. It sounded far worse than Camille and I really wanted to know how we could save millions of lives. I kept thinking about the Galveston Tx hurricane and we continued our inaccurate predictions. I’m proud of how people wanted to be smarter and learn not just about hurricanes but also other types of weather. The devastation of Camille stamped my brain for many more years to come.
