    I buy bare root perennials every year :) I had great success with hardy geraniums, black eyed susan, helianthus (Happy days), thalichtrum, oriental poppies and aquilegia. This year i ordered clematis, sedum, geum and ferns :)) can't wait to start planting. I usually plant directly in the ground ( after soaking them in water) end of march beginning of april. I grow my clematis through my shrub roses and Rose of Sharon. They help to provide shade for the clematis. It takes them a few years to get established. Trumpet vine is very invasive in my garden too. I found out the hard way. Bonny zone 5b Canada

      I can't grow ligustrum in my zone 5b garden. I don't see why not. As long as the clematis is getting sun on the top and shaded on the bottom. Plant a couple of feet away from shrub. @@shesamadgardener

    In your zone, you may not be getting enough cold westher for a shrub peony to do well. They need to go through stratification over winter in order for them to bloom in spring. Tree peonies do not need that, so you will have luck with those thriving in zone 8. They are much expensive though, but have huge dinner plate size blossoms that are fragrant. Tree peonies are the way to go in zone 8, if you want to plant any peonies.

      I agree … I actually had a peony put out a bud this year for the first time … it’s planted in a container so it was able to get colder instead of being in the ground.

    Lowe’s was probably late to the game this year because of the horrible storm last week that may have delayed their shipments. My beneficial nematodes were delivered 1-week late because of that delay (west coast). There may have been a hub delay too.

    I've read there are 3 different groups of clematis. Copied off google search is the following: Group 1 blooms spring on old wood and do not require pruning to flower the following year. Group 2 clematis bloom in early summer, first on old wood, then on new wood. These can be pruned after flowering. Group 3 clematis bloom in late summer on new wood. Did the roots from Lowes happen to indicate the Group variety? Also have you discovered which group works best for our southern climate?

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      They did not say on the package but it is an easy look up. I don’t have enough experience with the three groups to teach about it yet, but maybe after this year

      @dawnmitchell11 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes, easy look up. I grew from bare root from Lowe's and it was easy to google and find the type. I think most of the varieties they carry are fairly well known varieties.

      I was gifted 2 clematis from Costco last year. Had no clue if they'd even grow in Houston. planted them in bottomless pots in shaded spots. They vined out on my trellis and as you said, didn't bloom again after being planted. I didn't cover or protect during 19 degrees and I checked this morning and there is new leaf growth from, what look like, dead stems!😮😊 So I did check and both are Group 2 so being hopeful for beautiful flowers this spring!

    From the reading I have done, Henrii and Nelly Moser are supposed to be varieties that do well in Texas, not sure about southwestern Tx.
    I have a Belle de Woking also from Lowe's (bare root). I started mine spring 2022 and left it in a nursery can for it's first year. I put it in a landscape pot last spring so that I can adjust sun exposure as needed. Had a couple of bloom buds, but deer got them. 😭
    Deer like the foliage in addition to the blooms. I have another from Costco, don't remember the variety, but I think it was under $40. Clematis can also be used as a ground cover, left to ramble along the ground. I haven't tried that yet.
    I have tried Sandra Bernhardt peonies. I started mine in pots so I could adjust sun exposure. They did nothing, no sprouts despite following directions to a T. Possibly too hot in the large nursery pots. I'm in San Antonio and I regularly see Itoh peonies and the Shirley Temple variety of peony at the local nursery. I believe those are the ones that do best in Texas. I'm not really sure how to plant them here because I know they want lots of sun, but don't like really hot sun. I'm thinking maybe a few hours of early morning sun with dappled shade/sun through the rest of the day?

    • @shesamadgardener

    I, too, am looking to add several clematis to my garden this year! I'm going to check out Lowes thanks to your suggestion. I do want at least ONE clematis that is mature though, so I'm probably going to purchase a gallon size Jackmanii in the spring! In regards to Nikko Blue Hydrangea, I have a lot of hydrangea macrophylla here in North Texas! In the RIGHT location, they can thrive! They absolutely need almost full shade though. A little morning sun or filtered shade is great for getting blooms, but shade the rest of the day is vital. Nikko blue blooms on old wood only, so sometimes with these February arctic cold fronts, it damages the blooms. Look for one like "Endless Summer" hydrangea that blooms on old wood and new wood, so you are guaranteed blooms each year! And in regard to Peonies, I have killed two peonies and had 0 success so far- the Sarah Bernhardt and the Karl Rosenfield varieties. One was planted full sun (it fried) and one was planted in part sun (this one *may* be still alive, but I think it's dead). It's so fun watching your videos and seeing another North Texas gardener in action. 🙂

I’m just not sure how much sun they can take so I hope they recover and that I have them planted in the right areas. This is my first time growing these. I have one hollyhock plant a friend gave me. It’s new from this spring so I’m anxious to see how it does. Peonies, I’ve had them for several years as a cutting from my great grandmothers place. They have always bloomed, even the first year after I moved them 3 years ago but haven’t done great since then. I am in Texas zone 8, I bought 3 Sarah Bernhardt peonies from Costco 8 years ago, they were easy to grow and have multiplied to 5 plants. They need full sun and bloom profusely every year. I give them iron supplements as leaves show green veins because of our alkaline soil. I have heard they don’t like to be moved and don’t bloom 😮after being moved. I have not experienced this. I move things around frequently 😅. I have finally found a perfect spot where after they bloom they can stay in a less significant part or my backyard. I have always had good luck with Costco bulbs and bare roots. I recommend trying their stuff. I have tried them in sun, part shade, and full shade and they all struggle and struggle until they finally perish. It’s heartbreaking. Also, in case you aren’t aware: hydrangea blooms blue in acidic soils or pink in alkaline soil. White hydrangea will always be white; but the pink and blue are subjective to soil composition.

      @TrixieJFerguson, howdy neighbor! I'm also in SA area. I have had good luck with Endless Summer macrophylla hydrangea that I have planted in large pots. Mine are on the north side of a deciduous tree. November -late March they get mostly full sun, so they get a good charge for blooms when the temps are cooler. During the heat months they get some morning sun and then little peaks of sun and shade the rest of the day. The trouble I have had recently with them is the hard freeze we had last year. I was unable to put them in the garage like previous years. They still had green foliage when the hard freeze hit in December 2022. I had several branches die. I cut them back and am trying to nurse them along.
      I'm on my third Little Lime panicle hydrangea. They haven't done well for me, no blooms. The first two I killed. 😬
      Not sure if they don't get enough sun or what. If this third one continues to disappoint this year, I will probably try to plant it in my parents yard in Oklahoma City this coming fall. Maybe a better situation for it

    Are you fertilizing these right now?

      I just added compost for now. When I plant in the garden, I will add a slow release fertilizer.

    Love Clematis. I’m now a zone8 formerly zone7b they do well here. I’ve found the ones from box stores are just as good as the online purchased ones as far as even those take 2 seasons before blooming. Can’t wait to hear more about your Don Juan and Jackman combo. I planted the Miss Bateman last year to pair with my D.J. And see signs of buds on it now!!
