    I upgraded from the fenix 6X to the Epix 2 and got 8 days out of the battery, including 1.5 to 2 hours of a mix of indoor and GPS activities per day, this was with screen off, gesture on, GPS only, maps in dark mode.
    The Epix screen is gorgeous to look at, very sharp, hi res and with lots of detail.
    However I felt like whenever I touched it I was using up more battery with the screen on.
    I decided to return it and got the fenix 7X SS instead.
    After 1 week I am at just over 50% doing the same activities, so essentially double the battery.
    The 7X screen is crisper and has better contrast than my 6X had, but not as nice as the Epix screen of course.
    But I am happier with the 7X SS not having to think about battery life, and the screen being slightly larger makes it easier to read with larger fonts and to poke at to manipulate the map screen.

    • @kryptorick5120
      @kryptorick5120 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      which fonts are you talking about? Some reviewer made an article a while ago showing that all brands use the same fonts on all watch sizes. You won't read text and numbers better on a bigger screen but you'll be able to display more data fields. The advantage is clearer on maps, you just see more of it at a certain zoom level. Unless this changed in the past year or so.
      Interesting fact for people upgrading, the screen on a fenix 7/epix 2 is larger than the one on a 5X plus. So you can go down one watch/bezel size and still go up 0.1 inch in screen.

      @chrisgilligan4968 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There's no doubt about it that the Epix doesn't have the battery life that the Fenix has. I upgraded from a Fenix 5X Plus to the Epix 2. It's not apples to apples because although the watch case is smaller, the screen size is larger on the Epix - that combined with the brightness lets my struggling eyes still make use of the info on the screen. On the Fenix I could only see the time - all of the other fields were to small and dim for me to be able to read. With the Epix, I have it in gesture mode instead of always on, and I also have do not disturb on during my normal sleeping hours. I'm not working out as much as I should be, but with normal daily use and a workout here and there I'm getting 15-ish days of battery life. That's more than enough for me. I'm happy that I purchased this watch....and golf season hasn't even started yet. This is likely the best golf watch on the market (same features as the Marq Golfer without the ceramic bezel and luxury upgrades).

      @@chrisgilligan4968 Well said my friend, I don’t know how that dude had it on wrist motion to wake and only lasted 8 days. Maybe he used the watch the whole day and night idk. I agree though, I can’t have a watch that is both smart and good for tracking my performance with a dim screen and the colors are so dull. I will never turn back to dim screens. Epix Gen 2 is the future of Garmin.

      I'll be upgrading from a Samsung Galaxy watch 4 which barely manages 24 hours out of a full charge, so to get 8 days out of it will be quite the upgrade for me! 😂

  • @kryptorick5120
    @kryptorick5120 ปีที่แล้ว +17

    I think it's pretty clear cut. If you're ok with charging your watch once a week and want a gorgeous screen then the Epix is the obvious choice. If you need really long battery life with solar charging because you go on tours for days/weeks at a time or if you don't like amoled screens, then stick with the fenix.
    Alternatively you can also take a small power bank with you on long tours. A small 5000mAh one will weight 90g and be able to charge your phone once or twice or your watch 10+ times. If you're out this long you need something like this as a back up for safety anyway.
    I'll add that the feedback on fast charge on the epix has been very good. Plug it in 15min everyday when you shower and you'll never have to charge it for real.
    Check for deals in general. Right now the epix 2 steel is 650 chf in Switzerland for instance (1:1 with $) and the fenix 7 is below 600 even. The 7X and the sapphire versions remained unaffected by price reduction here ( at 850-1000) and are not worth the money at this point imo.

    • @rolandrohde
      @rolandrohde ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Actually...it isn't so clear cut at all!
      Yes, the AMOLED will look great indoors and for the few Seconds it is actually on, but the Fenix can and will display the entire watchface with all stats on screen all the time, and it looks fantastic outside in the sunlight and is still well readable in moderate indoor lighting without turning on the backlight.
      On a Phone, I would not consider a MIPS Display, but on a watch it is the only viable option for me, because I don't like wearing a black circle/rectangle on my wrist for 99% of the time.

    • @TheHUhelps
      @TheHUhelps ปีที่แล้ว +3

    nice video, the main draw for the Fenix 7x SS or Tactix 7 for me is battery life and solar while thru hiking. Currently planning a 30 day thru hike, will be in the sun all day every day on the trail. Not having to worry about charging it is the strongest point. If i were getting a smart watch to workout daily/weekend use i would strongly consider the Epix, the screen is beautiful.

    Hi Chris.
    Watched this and your Epix 2 review. Very, very, well presented reviews and I DO get the title, just so confused as what to do.
    I'm essentially buying a Garmin to track sports. I often cycle to work, walk A LOT and want to really look at hiking now, hopefully more swimming. The hiking may defo use GPS and the cycling will to better track stats. I do want this mainly as a fitness watch though.
    The Epix is a gorgeous screen though but not sure if charging every 5/6 days will be tiresome. But I am not an ultra marathon runner or doing multi-day sport events. These watches are so expensive though and want it to last. One big worry with the Epix is if you use the GPS off and on during the week and already maybe charging every 5/6 days what will the battery be like in 2/3 years? The Fenix is so far ahead in battery it is likely to still be going strong. But at the price it is also nice to have a super nice screen.
    I know your happy with the battery of the Epix. Do you feel it's a clear winner and the screen is so good it makes up for the battery's shortcomings? I do appreciate good graphics too and the high resolution will make the screen easier to read and got to the point of needing reading glasses and also thing the Epix looks gorgeous (although liking the true always on of the Fenix and not having to worry about disabling half the features to keep the battery and not worrying about draining it by actually using it!).
    Defo giving both your videos the thumbs up. Would be good to have your advice on this. Also, very happy for anyone else comments. Going to post this in your other video as well if that's okay to try and get some quick feedback as ordered both with the sales but have to send one back but don't want to open them as can't afford them both so easier to return new.
    Thanks for your great reviews, you did some nice camera work on the Fenix, but making it even harder for me

    The fenix 7x sapphire solar watch has a major drawback, the screen in the menu as well as the messages that arrive when the phone is connected to the watch are set to black background and pale blue text (due to the poor finish of the sapphire glass, there is no white color, but pale blue color) and that text is hard to read. There is no option like on older models of garmin watches to change the background to be white or pale gray and the text to be black, which would be more legible. (Inverter color or display color setting). As soon as you sweat a little around your eyes during activities, you can't see clearly, or if you have a smaller (+ eye diopter) for reading, which most people over 40 have the same problem, you strain to read what is written on the screen. Otherwise, the watch is excellently made, but this problem with the screen and the lack of an option to set the background to be white or gray and the text to be black, which is more pleasant and legible for the eye, makes the garmin fenix 7x sapphire solar watch unusable for many people and if not documents in some software update the watch is a complete and utter failure. I found a lot of the same comments in several forums which says that the problem is not innocuous.

My main concern is that, over time, battery performance will drop and this will impact the Epix in a big way as its already quite short. The MIP display on my previous Forerunners has been absolutely fine

      Already quite short?? How long do you need a watch to last between charges? I mean if you're using the GPS for an activity every single day then ya you might be charging it once every 8-10 days or so. I find using it mostly as a watch - with a few activities, I am getting about 14 days out of each charge. With how quickly it charges, it has never been an issue for me!!

    How you compare fenix 7 and epix 2 vs Apple Watch Series 5,6 or 7?

    • @StayLoose200
      @StayLoose200 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It’s hard to compare them because they are completely different watches that focus on completely different things. I had both.
      Apple Watch needed to be charged for me twice a day. Once in the morning when I woke up, and again before bed.
      Better for smart Watch stuff and integrates amazingly with IOS.
      Garmins battery is better. Workout and Activities is better. Has a free Garmin coach, which isn’t bad. Still includes some smart Watch features but doesn’t focus on those features. WAY more durable and better looking in my opinion.
      Sold the Apple Watch and haven’t missed it. At all. Ever.

    • @chrisguess
      @chrisguess  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As I said in the video I haven’t used an Apple Watch for any length of time, but I would agree with @Joshua Phillips. I would say the Garmin’s are sports watches with smart watch features and the Apple Watch is a smart watch with sports features. Plus battery life is no comparison and Garmin devices are platform agnostic.

    Greta job, thanks. Both watches feel a little over done. Of the 50 or so activities I have never ever done 30 of them, it makes me feel perhaps I'm wasting my life. I'm shocked that no one reviews the "Going Fishing" activity, probably not enough sweating or the fish feel very safe if they see a garmin watch

    Should say Epix2 Sapphire is the best one to get today, long Tactix fan and have been on Fenix series from day one.
    So got fenix 7x and Tactix Pro to compare to my epix2 sapphire.
    As I always use my Tactix as daily I bought the epix 2 to check it out but after use it's hard going back to old display.😁
    IF you don't train Long distance and need battery...then go fenix/Tactix.

    • @chrisguess

      That’s the one thing that the Epix just can’t compete on is the battery life, although I think it’s pretty good. Difficult to go back to a MIP display once you’ve had an AMOLED though.

    You didn’t even mention the sunlight readability issue. Yeah the Epix display is bright but it is still hard to see in bright sunlight. I know for me and a lot of others, being able to get all the information you need from a quick glance at the watch face is very important. I often mount my Fenix 7 to my bike handlebars for navigation and don’t have the ability to shade the display with my hand just to see the map. I constantly think about how nice it would be to have that crisp display with all the nice colors but it’s not worth it to have a display that fights the sun instead of uses it to be more readable.

    • @dariuszlis4412
      @dariuszlis4412 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have to disagree regarding sunlight readability issue. I have a Epix 2 sapphire and vivoactive 4 . I can see much more on a sunny day than on my vivoactive 4. • @Kylek323
      @Kylek323 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      He said he’d go with the fenix 7s because he has small wrists and the epix is too large for his taste, he just wished the epix would come in a smaller size because he likes the screen, all opinions, btw I didn’t know all the info and specs for these watches before this video so I wouldn’t assume everyone does

    • @chrisguess
      @chrisguess  ปีที่แล้ว

      If I don’t put the specs in people say it’s not detailed enough, if I do then you don’t want them because they are on the website. The video is a review so has both opinion and features/ specs. Not everyone wants the same thing. I started making videos because I couldn’t find reviews as detailed as I wanted them. Try making some yourself and see what feedback you get.

    Another thing that you didn't mention - which I've yet to see any review mention - is that the Fenix is compatible with Garmin's Xero scopes for crossbows whereas the Epix is not compatible with those. Of course, this is pretty much only relevant to hunters.

    Solar capability on Garmin watches is overrated in my opinion. They certainly do not perform enough to justify the price increase. Considering battery life between the Fenix and Epic lines is a significant issue, but I wouldn't opt for the Fenix 7 for solar capability alone.
