I think them having David blame Jacob at first was touching on the fact that victims are almost always blamed, even initially by their parents. But David and Leyla's reactions are so authentic. They are horrified that they missed all the signs, and Maya was someone they both trusted. That's how abusers sneak in so easily, they are a trusted person the parents or the kid knows. It's not uncommon at all.
