I bought an '84 Ibanez bass used back in 1986. It's been my #1 bass since. It's an amazing bass.

I picked mie up in 89. It had been defretted and the preamp didnt worked. I managed to fix it. It never really spoke to me as a fret less so I found 1 on Ebay in the early 2000s at a great price. I ordereed it and open the box & guess what!? Defretted as well! Description said nothing about it being frettless! Pic was kinda blurry. I could do nothing but laugh, Had the initial one re-fretted.

I love these basses. My biggest regret was letting one of these pass back in the 90s

Had one too, weighed a bit, but it was tonally versatile and the neck was lovely. Those dark stained ash wings, thick Ebony fingerboard...

I just picked up a 1986 Matsumoku-made Westone Pantera in the same color. It has the same 5mm truss rod, buried way down in the hole. And I don't think anyone had ever touched it before I got it. The adjustment on it was really "fast", too. Barely a quarter turn, and it went from like .020" to .012".

Every time Dave gets a tight truss rod nut under string tension & you hear that creaking wood sound, I get a little anxious something will snap. Kinda similar anxiety when watching Kevin Richardson, The Lion Whisperer in the open ground with full sized lions. You know *they* know what they are doing, but your basic instinct is telling you something could go horribly wrong.

I’ve found that string height is dictated by the relief of the neck and the radius of the neck. I bend a lot. I need 0.015 relief to get my action down to the 4/64” range without fretting out bending after the twelfth fret with a standard Fender neck. On a flatter neck you can do much better. Good video Dave stay safe and sane!
