Honestly listened to countless versions of Chopin's Nocturne no 2 in my life but coming back to this song the way he plays the excerpt is the actual best in terms of pacing and little tricks

    • @johnrgonzalez8
      @johnrgonzalez8 9 ปีที่แล้ว +55

John Millthorpe Muse's interpretation of Chopin's Nocturne is very authentic and original but perhaps what makes it so great here is by how it works with the song as a whole. After the heavy militaristic theme it arrives like an epiphany; a nostalgic reflection of the bliss of youth... and we question ourselves, how did mankind ever come to this?

  • @TheBlindMusician
    @TheBlindMusician 10 ปีที่แล้ว +610

Matt's version of Chopin's nocture op. 9 no. 2 is my favourite of all time. Despite it not being complete, the way he put emotion in it is amazing. And the samples on the background really add to the song! It makes me want to cry everytime.

Don't wanna sound like I'm purposefully trying to be a 'special snowflake', but...
Muse are living geniuses. Matt Bellamy is such a beautiful composer, writer, musician in general...
I love the theme to this song. I am a huge fan of Muse, Queen, and Orwell himself so logically this is one of my favourite songs (pieces?) by Muse.
I've read Nineteen Eighty-Four as well as other novels by Orwell and I've fallen in love with the whole concept of the dystopian world.
I'm 13 years old and sadly none of my peers have an appreciation for neither beautiful music like that of Matt Bellamy's nor the hard-hitting stories like those of George Orwell's.
    Forever a lonely snowflake :(

    United States of Eurasia
You and me are the same
We don't know or care who's to blame
But we know that whoever holds the reigns
    Nothing will change
    Our cause has gone insane
And these wars they can't be won
And these wars they can't be won
Do you want them to go on and on and on
    Why split these states
When there can be only one
And must we do as we're told
Must still do as we're told
You and me fall in line
To be punished for unproven crimes
And we know that there's no one we can trust
    Our ancient heroes
    They are turning to dust
And these wars they can't be won
Does anyone know or care how they begun
They just promise to go on and on and on
    But soon we will see
    There can be only one

The first part of the final instrumental has the feel of the world in happy times, with children playing and laughing. The second, feels like war beginning with the sound of fighter jets, radio commands and the laughter is all gone.
This music is perfect to go as a covering soundtrack to a chaotic scene of carnage. You can imagine a battle scene being played out to the piano. In fact, it hauntingly reminder me of the final scenes of Schindler's List.
    Absolutely amazing.

So no one else noticed the Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom reference at 1:33? They totally lifted "Parade of the Slave Children" - likely on purpose, as it comes right after the lyric "Must we do as we're told?" Brilliant.
Also, I find it hilarious that the hugely obvious Queen riff at 1:16 coincides with the lyric "[Why split these states when] there can be only one!?" That's a veiled quote from Highlander, which included several songs by Queen.

This song should be a worldwide anthem. The text is a pledge against (proxy) wars and for global peace.
Must we do as we're told?
Must we participate in the wars the rich and powerful force upon us?
What if it is war, but nobody goes there.

Years after first hearing this song and first hearing the Chopin through it, I finally am taking piano lessons and learning the original nocturne. I was wondering why I kept wanting to play some of the rhythms and ornaments not as written, and coming back to this I see why-Matt made a few changes here and there to the melody. Nothing drastic, mind you, it’s still very much Chopin...but there’s a freedom, improvisational authenticity to Matt’s delivery. It’s almost as if he was playing a version of the piece that was passed on by ear rather than by sheet music, the way orally transmitted stories change slightly when told by different people. In the post-apocalyptic 1984 narrative that so heavily inspired this album, it’s like someone is playing the nocturne having heard it many times in years past, but the music has been burned by the government and now only exists in the player’s mind, with its little differences and creative freedom.
