Practicing things like the 430 in a sim made all the difference in my real life training. Less time playing with the knobs and more time actually flying. Cool to see your home setup!
There is an easy acronym to brief a hold TSAFE. Type of entry to the hold including if its distance or timed. Speed in the hold. Altitude to hold. Fuel available and finally EFC expect further clearance. Standard makes it easy
@@FlightChopsI round the numbers to make it easy, it doesn't have to be perfect. The seminole I did my flight test uses 20.9 Gallons per hour. I round it to 20. 45 mins reserve + 15 mins for the approach = 1 hour. So fuel on board divided by 20 minus 1 = Hold time. I told the examiner that for the flight I prepared the calculations I had 20 mins for holding but for the actual flight we could hold for an hour. I hope this one helps
@@LIamaLlama554 Because I over calculate on the times for the approach. So they compensate each other. And it is easier to divide by 20 than by 21. It is an approximation, not an exact number
Sim time is huge for instrument training. It’s way cheaper than a real airplane and usually (from my experience) more sensitive/twitchy. That last part really helps you get down fine control inputs and makes a real plane a little easier honestly because it doesn’t move around so much on its own.
I've found this. Using the sim for PPL training actually hindered me, but having started instrument training in the UK I made massive progress just between my first two lessons by using a sim.
My kids growing up @ school. If they made a mistake then they did 10 redo’s so that said this simulator is a big $ saver. Flights cost money, redo’s on the simulator are building up experience. So after a period of time with the simulator go fly and verify. This thing is automated training, and with your video’s it’s amazing good. Thanks again for your work. And I am coming at this 2 year’s after posting.
I mean come on. Every time I see Dennis on your videos it's like a plus . The coolest CFI out there , it's like nothing bothers him . When everything is on fire Dennis just comes in and says I got this ..
Track IR was one of the single biggest enhancements to my sim immersion experience, prior to that I had three screens, now back to one 42 inch. That said I'm only using a CH eclipse yoke and CH rudder pedals so I need to see everything in the virtual cockpit, your using more of an instrument set up. But for GA VFR with Ortho4XP scenery it's fantastic. Can't understand why anyone would vote this down. Great idea and very good video, hope to see more of these comparisons, there is so much that can be covered, training, maneuvers, safety, stalls, spins, different aircraft, equipment, it's huge. Keep up the good work.
To switch the CDI to source from the GPS press the leftmost key on the GPS under the screen, labeled VLOC in white. When you press it, the text will change to magenta and read GPS. Press it again to revert back to VLOC and slave the CDI back to your NAV radio.
I'm following you until you say there is a button labeled "VLOC" - I only see the white labelled "CDI" button which is the one to toggle between GPS and NAV
I find when flying with the 530/430 TRK and DTK are your saviors. Yes, the needle in the CDI is what you're actually following and tells you where you are on the LOC, but TRK and DTK tell you how to stay there even with a crazy wind correction angle. Once I get that needle pretty well centered I make TRK and DTK match and make small corrections based on that, only changing TRK a few degrees at a time. At 20:04 he's actually doing pretty good. TRK is 111 and DTK is 119. Just say "left is littler, right is bigger" and you can see you don't want to turn left, you need to turn right to make 111 go bigger towards 119. Since you're right of course, you'll have to go a few degrees bigger on TRK compared to DTK, maybe to 121. Once that needle centers, or just before, turn "slightly" whichever way to make TRK and DTK match (left makes TRK littler, right makes TRK bigger), in this case you'd have to turn left since you'd be on TRK of like 121. Once the needle is centered and TRK and DTK match, look at the heading on the gyro and hold that heading. That now becomes your primary "stay on the LOC" instrument and then glance over at TRK and DTK and make "slight" corrections to make them match, "left is littler, right is bigger". I was told those slight corrections should just be made with rudder pressure. That's it! Also, zoom in a little on the GPS, the iPad with georeferenced plates are AWESOME for situational awareness and give you an idea with a very quick glance of where you're headed and what you need to do, but the GPS will give that same information if you just zoomed in a little and it's right beside the TRK DTK numbers, at least on the 530. On the 430, you can't have the map, TRK/DTK and the on GPS screen CDI up at the same time.
@@FlightChops, don't let Blake feel to bad about that LOC capture and tracking. This is me in a Redbird LD going bonkers with a failed vacuum system. I wouldn't have died in the real world, but I might have run out of gas before turning inbound to the airport :) My instructor just sat there and watched me lose my mind. imgur.com/J1qj2mg
Trimming I think is different because you can feel out a trim in real life, to the point where you can almost feel the trim “catch” in a position. If you are purely using electric trim though it is pretty similar, I use flight sim x and I found myself using the same trim techniques in real life that I did in the sim.
Trimming in a full cockpit RedBird is also way harder than in real life. I think its either the position encoder being a cheap relative-position type rather than absolute position [and its skipping some ticks], or the programmed sensitivity is wrong; likely both. I know if you spin the heading bug or obs knobs too fast they don't read direction correctly and just jitter back and forth.
@@lfox02 Yeah x-plane sounds are absolutely awful, even the payware planes. P3D is much better with the A2A planes, but even then not great, especially the startup and shutdown sounds.
@@phelixanger6152 Fortunately it's compatible with FMOD now, otherwise we'd be kinda stuck with the default sound engine. You can record awesome sounds all you want, but only FMOD can give you positional audio and occlusion.
I'm only 5 min in the video but I wanted to give you a shoutout for the editing in this video! The integration of audio between the sim and the plane is so awesome!
Right on! Thanks for noticing the work that went into that aspect - my plan with this one (and all the IFR status vlogs actually) was to not spend too much time on the edit, because I designed the series with unique thumbnails and titles to target a smaller “niche with in the niche” audience... but I keep working too hard on them :P
So my own fun story about flight sims. I've always loved aviation and I've made it my career since leaving highschool but serving as a crew chief really kicked my motivation in the nuts. In 2012 while stationed in Korea I made a friend who had the same love for aviation and we built our friendship off of that passion for flying and fighter jets. In 2013 we both left Korea, my bro went to England and I went to Germany. Once in Germany I got something I always wanted, a gaming pc lol. I told my friend terry and he convinced me to get a hotas setup and DCS. Although its a combat sim, it is still a "study simulation". Although I played flight sims for a while as a child, I was NOT professional at all. My buddy through an internet connection taught me how to fly and manipulate different systems. Needless to say, I will always appreciate the value of a study level simulation. Coincidently around this time is when I found your channel and my love for aviation was truly rekindled and the fire has burned bright ever since. THANKYOU Steve for what your doing, your not only inspiring aviators. Your also bridging the gap between two communities which is totally awesome!
FlightChops I would recommend a Ch Yoke or Preorder Honeycomb yoke they are much better than saitek yoke just my 2 scents. Also I would highly recommend the Cessna 172SP Skyhawk from AirfoilLabs as it appears to have the features you are after that are absent from the default cessna 172
@@newholland5478 you can easily remove it. Even if you dont want to remove you dont have to use it just dont allocate anything to the throttle and nothing will happen are you not aware that there is an easy fix for it. Also it is simply the better of the two as i have both and have used both for years.
@@PEPcessna I have a couple ch yokes but you forgot to mention how sticky they are near the center. I am going to get some dry lube and see if that clear it up because it's awful right now. That honeycomb looks pretty fantastic though. It's ridiculous there still isn't a good FFB yoke that is actually affordable.
@@phelixanger6152 I havent experienced a sticky centre i must be very lucky but anyway i have moved on from that yoke worth the extra money for a yoke with a very high warranty 5 years on honeycomb would highly recommend
@@PEPcessna Yeah I would love to get one if I was made of money haha To be fair my ch yokes are about 15 years old, but they were still a bit sticky even when new. I hear dry lube is supposed to work wonders though, so I am going to give it a shot today while wiring up a switch panel I made, otherwise I will take it apart and ream and shim the bushings.
During my training, I got the cheapest controller and the $11 Microsoft Flight Sim and trained my butt on the G1000 and the regular IFR default aircraft. It helped me immensely and let me focus on the more nuanced details of IR. It's currently my favourite type of flying, youd love the G1000 if you had the chance to stick with it. It's also interesting to see the details between Canadian IR and French. I was using the Jeppesen charts exclusively, they look better than the one you're using but I'm not sure.
I use the Real Sim Gear 430 with RealityXP and I get the needle deflection check and since it's running the real Garmin software I get the same behaviors as the real 400W in my 172. If you purchase the Jeppesen nav data for this unit you can also copy that in and keep the sim up to date
17:20 For this request you will need to use an airplane that does not have a 530 gps system on the airplane so the 430 system you have can operate radios and nav for the airplane. I haven't used x-plane before but my suggestion here is to either check the stock airplanes on x-plane to find the one that only has one 430 OR you can consider purchase a 3rd party airplane (Way better option than stock) that only has a 430. Carenado.com is a very good 3rd party developer that have good airplanes for FSX, P3D and X-Plane. You can consider checking them out. (F33A Bonanza $26.95 Single 430 system as an option.) Also, is on my basic understanding on X-Plane that their NAV database is easier to update than P3D. You can check out navigraph.com because I think they have tools to update the sim database so you can use it on any aircraft. (Subscription required). EDIT: After posting this I read on the comment a link that can make your C172 panel 430 only. You should try that! The flight sim community is awesome! Also, you should try VATSIM with the new audio.. =)
Lots of comments to get through to see if it was already answered, but great response, Jose. Steve, great video seriously! I always enjoy them, but these have been much more relatable from a personal standpoint on my current journey. I learned a few things and what to work on next for myself. Great time to be a pilot with all the technology coming together too that can be used at home! X-Plane was hugely beneficial in helping me learn the GNS430 (and other radio / nav panels), which is always reassuring to see someone else doing the same. Justflight has the best PA-28 models (payware but all use a GNS430 as primary radio/nav) if you want to fly those to match your aircraft being used for IFR training as well. If you keep the default Cessna 172, the reality expansion pack by simcoders is the best upgrade for the flight model. Probably already aware of that, and I'm sure so many before me have suggested it elsewhere. If not, there ya' go! : )
If you want the absolute exact replica then you need to Buy Reality XP GNS 430...Use the 172 mod that was posted below to get only a single 430 and then Add the Reality XP GNS 430. It installs and uses the Actual Garmin Trainer under the hood and then injects it into the Sim. I use Both the GTN 750 and the GNS 530 in my home sim and they are amazing!
In my (real) plane, there's a switch for the autopilot source between vor 1 and vor 2. In my case the GPS is on 1 and a vor receiver with glideslope is on 2, but the switch will go between. If there's something like that in the sim you can set up the secondary (430) for the autopilot. Otherwise, get a plane in the sim that only has one 430 (like the airfoillabs-C172SP), or possibly configure the one you're using that way (some planes in the sim have options like that). As far as flaps, I usually dump them all in at minimums or breakout, or leave them out for the missed.
When you go ‘direct to’ on a Garmin system, it will calculate a standard rate turn from your current position to get on the line. So you should normally not have to make a drastic maneuver to stay on course. You need to get your lower display to show all the instruments, not just the six pack.
Great tip about the 430 and direct to - I didn't realize that - and yes - the lower panel is not complete - what I mostly need down there is the ILS needles... working on options
FlightChops To test it, zoom way in on the display and activate direct to a waypoint that’s to the side or behind you... Maybe an HSI would be an acceptable alternative... perhaps not ideal if it’s not what you’re flying with, but it would work.
In X-plane use Ctrl+P, this will bring up a 3D flight path, press it again, will add some shading to see height component better. To clear it press ctrl+P 3 more times. The last two presses will bring up flight boxes if you have an ILS tuned, then the third clears it. Easiest to see from an external view but super helpful for patterns, approaches, and holds.
You can connect Xplane to Foreflight natively in the sim. It then sends gps and ahrs sim data to your iPad just like say a stratus does in the real plane. It populates your plane location on the map and charts/plates. Really handy for instrument training. Also the Xplane ‘control pad’ app lets you change weather and simulate failures for awesome emergency procedures training!
I felt this exact same way the first time I tried the sim. My advice is to use the autopilot for the first 10ish flights so you lean the sim. It is a whole new thing to lean. Good luck to both of you!
Pretty compelling argument to 1) get back into sims, 2) add sim hardware, 3) to get back into Windows, 4) FlightSim 2020, 5) actually investigate flight training. Not necessarily in that order.
I advise getting the Pilotworkshop's "Getting Started with Flight Simulation" to learn how to get the most out of your sim setup and get your physical GPS unit working well. It looks like you are flying a Piper in the "real world" so you should get a third party Piper to match. Carenado aircraft are very detailed but the Garmin G-1000 doesn't do SIDs and STARS which I have always wondered why since the Laminar G-1000 do them just fine. Then to top things off, get a subscription to Navigraph and have Jep update every month. No more alert "Data out of Date" and missing procedures in the Garmin. No pausing allowed, prebrief like normal and work through your problem. You learn how to deal with the stress and organize your thinking. PilotEdge is defiantly a plus to really get you comfortable in the real world. I wish I had all these aids when I was getting my Instrument rating 35+ years ago.
Couple of tips Steve from someone else using the XP11 172 to mirror real world training: - there's a free add-on for the 172 that greatly increases the realism by tweaking some of the flight characteristics. If I remember right it fixes the flaps 30 attitude to be more like the real thing and gets rid of the silly screeching tires - there's another add-on that will remove the 530 and let you run a single x430 and replace the x530 with the old Bendix style radio stacks - toebrake2yaw is a great plugin that lets you bind the rudder pedals to the toe brakes to give more realistic ground handling if your pedals are like mine and don't have a seperate toe brakes axis - you can set view hotkeys in the basics>quick views under keyboard settings. I recommend setting the numpad for quick views over the glareshield, down at the mixture/AP controls I have more 172 goodies but those are the main ones I remember off the top of my head. Send me a message if you want some help with the tweaking, I've got a hilarious amount of time invested into fiddling with xplane. I'm also Burlington local working on my CPL and IR but do my flying out of Kitchener so again, if you want any help or input just let me know! Your setup looks really good and has tremendous potential, you just need some of the hardware to play nicer with the software ! Best of luck!
Finally getting to updating this as per the advice here... Would love help setting up the panel as you've described - please email to discuss further - flightchops at gmail dot com
Tough choice, of course it's a good idea to learn basic steam gauges, but glass suites are becoming more and more commonplace, especially considering that glass gauges can save lives. Just trying out FSX's G1000 setups can get you familiar enough to build confidence for IFR, I used to hate it since I couldn't figure it out as easily as a typical GPS, but the G1000's features FAR exceed those offered in any earlier units. You save weight, you delete your vacuum pump, and you have complete visual reference on the fly, actual numbers instead of guesswork. Even the Nxi has features that makes airliner gauges blush!
Is the flight simulator equipment still available am interested how do I enter. I Dreamed of being a pilot all my life but got in a car accident in the beginning of my flight school am now a quadriplegic and can only dream of flying now... I tried my friend's flight simulator with his yoke and throttle and it was amazing.... thanks for the videos anyway I watch all.. keep it up
there is a way to make the 430 bezel the primary nav/com but the problem with the setup you are using in xplane it that you will have to use the display for the 530 in the 430 bezel so there will be some minor differences. you can google how to setup the 430 bezel as the primary
the panel is awesome, but I am wondering if it is any benefit beyond the buttons and knobs for the 430. You seem to spend a lot of time on the screen sim picture than the hard panel. The hard panel needs VOR heads? I guess that is extra bucks?
You have no idea how happy I am to hear you discuss how bad the pro flight yoke is. I did the rubber band mod to the spring it's still pretty bad, would love you see you review the honeycomb, I want to buy one but worried I'm over hyping it and will be disappointed with it like I was with the saitek.
Flight chops check out pilot edge network, real ATC for your sim. Real traffic on the sim, even radio issues like trying to not step on others and still check in at mid field lol. These guys run a great program. They have a full training for VFR and IFR. Fully supported web site and just a awesome place to learn, make some screw ups but theirs a real ATC operator to tell you how you failed a hold or a entry.
Or if you're willing to fly around the Boston area, BVARTCC is 100% free (unless you donate, which you should), is *very* professional and well organized, and provides a tremendous learning experience 24x7x365. bvartcc.com
I recommend switching to the Air Foil Labs 172 model... It is way more realistic and doesn't have extra goofy GPS's. The reason why it's all confusing for you - is that your aircraft in the sim, doesn't match the panel, so it is causing confusion.
The error warning doesn't go away even when you set to the compass - you have to acknowledge the error. Also, a shortcut is to hit "d" to do this set for you (we will say it’s too hard to line up your eyes on a 2d monitor than it would have been in real life). Make it part of your preflight to hit d to get it done so you never actually get the warning. I'm only a sim flyer - it’s good to know this kind of flying (which I do often and not pausing) is easier in real life :) The only thing is I don't have radio talking to me (or if I do, it’s the computer generated one - I don't do PilotEdge and have a real human talk to me).
There are a few things that might help you out flightchops. For the autopilot I know Saitek has an autopilot kit. But FSX should have have an autopilot and it should be Shift key then any of the numbers 1-9. Lastly maybe have the keyboard placed somewhere else just so it out of the throttle quadrant and doesn’t fall. Anyway good luck on Instrument training, simulator are a great tool and love the videos.
@@FlightChops this is the developers page. You may be able to get it other places as well. There's also a turbo version if you look around. www.justflight.com/product/pa28r-arrow-iii-xplane-11 This particular model is universally liked in the sim community though, praised for its quality.
Hi Chops is the panel with your six pack an Ipad? If so you can get a small program that allows u to build the panel of your plane and the 430 adjust thing son the six pack in both game and Ipad. I built a system with some of the items you have to help with my instrument add-on. I completely learned the 430 via the sims its about 95% accurate. I was able to do all my flights at home and practice, plus I even flew my checkride before the actually. I tried to use it for my commercial multi add-on but hasnt been good for that. what you're using it for is great, anything else I have found it doesnt help. Its also great tool for flying a VOR arc type approach. So many add-ons that greatly improve graphics and I was able to find the exact cockpit layout I was using. if you check my page it has a video showing somethings. Cheers
I knew you guys would be able to help! So I can like modify the virtual panel to make it talk to my RealSimGear unit "better" so that the 430 is the primary nav/com?
The IFR rating was the most stressful training and check ride to me, but i absolutely love IFR flying. You're doing a great job! Also how is the aircraft build going?
Wow, that was pretty intense. I was so far behind the plane it wasn’t funny. I’m a ways away from being ready for instrument training but learning to fly on a g1000 equipped 172 I think is really going to help. At least I’m hoping that will be the case. Really cool sim.
Awesome video. In this video it might have been nicer for the viewer to convert the voice audio track to mono. I kept hearing you in my left ear and your friend in my right, but often enough the camera was looking at you from the other side, so the voice sources were contra!
Interesting - I did do a pass with headphones on and noticed that, but thought it was minor enough not to fix... but thanks for the feedback - I will stick with mono in the future
@@FlightChops Might as well take the opportunity to mention that I think you're awesome! You're a big inspiration and I love your videos. Greetings from the Netherlands!
Upgrade from X-Plane to Flight simulator 2020 when it comes out, it looks stunning! Im about to take my instrument checkride and this Instrument video series has been a huge help. Great videos as always flightchops.
IMO stick with either P3D or Xplane. VIsuals are good on the new sim, but as a pilot I will much rather have more complex from 3rd party devs and have complete use of an airplane in a sim rather than switching the view to an outside view to see the scenery. Also, hope you nail your IFR checkride! Best of luck!
I'm excited to see where FS2020 goes, but until it's released and we get our hands on it it's not worth considering or holding off getting another sim on. The flight models in X-Plane aren't perfect but FS2020 is a total unknown at this point.
When I practice on my sim or have a safety pilot in the plane, I use paper plates. That way when in actual or without a safety pilot, having an iPad/georeferencing, it feels like I am cheating. That and if my iPad took a dump, I am not outside a comfort zone or least less so. Make practice hard on yourself, so the real thing feels less so.
I would lose the armrests on the chair. I saw that it created a problem at one point. You don't have those in the real thing so it si best not to get used to it?
Great video...suggest you remove or lower the instrument panel on the upper screen, the double panel setup you have detracts from the realism. If the “hard” panel is in front of you the upper screen should just be the out the window view.
The issue is, we needed the "virtual panel" because we were using the 530 for primary nav, had to see the ILS needles, and had to manage the auto pilot at the bottom of the virtual panel - far from an idea set up... but I am working on making it better
Shame the contest is for US residents only. Circumstances beyond your control I bet. A great giveaway to whoever is lucky enough to win! With regard to the RealSim 430, the guys at realsim have an update for the unit where it will switch the primary 530 for the 430 in xplane to switch the functions. Then the hardware will set the 430 as nav1 rather than nav2. After seeing your setup I bought a 430 for my IFR training and switched everything over. I now have the stock 172 in xplane set up for 430 primary linked to vor1. Exactly as I have in my training aircraft.
Is x-plane, one high res monitor, yoke, pedals and fast computer enough to use for effective IFR practice. I'm trying to find the minimal setup that will help me with proficiency in instrument training, procedures, different instrument types, etc
For IFR proficiency, I found the RealSimGear physical GNS unit (and now the G1000 that I am using) to be more valuable than a crazy multi screen set up; and controls at best are not realistic, but honestly, they are barely relevant - plan to use the auto pilot in the sim. IFR is about cockpit workflow and situational awareness. Something like Pilot Edge is great for having realistic ATC to manage, and I'd also recommend getting ForeFlight and an iPad to fly the sim with. IFR is not about looking out the window, it's about understanding how to scan the panel, work the radios and manage the airplane.
@@FlightChops The warning is valid only for the instant it was created. You have to dismiss it manually. Also I recommend going to Rendering Settings and setting the first/main monitor to "forward without panel".
Is shipping cost the only reason that the contest is limited to the contiguous United States? I am in Canada and would be more than willing to pay any additional shipping costs for the opportunity to get this SIM setup!
Yes it is. I'm suggesting to people that are cool with that, to provide a U.S. address if they can deal with their own import. But be advised, it's going to be coming on a skid most likely, and we are expecting the packing/shipping cost with in the U.S. to be $500-$700 (thanks Sporty's for handling that :) . So I really don't know what the costs would be to move it further and deal with duty, etc on a ~$10,0000+ item.
I would highly recommend modifying the yoke by removing the centering spring and replacing it with rubber bands. that would make the yoke more realistic by eliminating the detent in the middle.
The other problem with these yokes is they have a dead zone programmed into the firmware that you cannot do anything about in either the simulator or the OS hardware setup. I could move mine 10 degrees either side before the sim would respond and roll the aircraft, all sim dead zones set at 0.
Cool video, good to see. Any input on how much $ you have into a system like that? Or what you’re using. I’m not super tech savvy, I have a really simple sim setup but I’m the end I understand the plane not the computer so I go out to learn from that. It has no pause though lol which could probably be helpful
Can you just fail the Garmin 530 in the sim to get the 430 to feed the needles? I am a total novice. I just thinking out loud as I'm watching your workaround.
There are adjustments you can make to the sim, but it's really difficult overall. I usually end up doing at least altitude hold (autopilot) in the sim to account for that. In real life my altitude hold doesn't work as well as the trim, so I use that instead, and use the autopilot for heading.
I think that a mad mod for this FS would be to add another screen, and align things so that the gap is the pillar. Then, using on of those head tracking headbands (the name escapes me now, but they were pretty neat, i think Sony made some...been a while. I played a lot of flight games many moons ago with it, before "VR") you can "look" around, which would mimic the motion of your line of sight with the FS, which i'm sure has contingencies for this kind of stuff, i hear that there are some that are entirely "VR" ready.
@aserta TrackIR is over kill for what he is trying to do. Also VR isn't clear enough in the headset to read the instrument panel clearly besides needing a high end video card with at least 6 Gb of VRAM and a fast i7 CPU.
Hi there, thanks a lot for your videos! Keep up the great work! Hope you don't mind I ask a question down here in the comments :) I've become a little bit obsessed with GA recently and early next year I hope to start sailplane courses with an end goal to get a PPL eventually (I'm 30+ if it matters). But it's all still quite far ahead, unlike simulators like X-Plane and MS FS 2020 which is around the corner. It seems like it's possible to assemble an OK-level desktop sim station (not home cockpit of course) for 2-3K USD/EUR, which is 30% of PPL and free to fly (unlike real rental planes where you pay by hours. But I'm afraid of "damaging" my not-existing-yet muscle memory by using yokes like honeycomb (not sure I'll go for force-feedback options -- too pricey). What if I learn and memorize incorrect movements, procedures, etc. and then we'll have troubles studying and flying real planes? Am I freaking out for no reason? I've been playing racing games for years, and then had no issues starting driving a real car / go-karts. Is there any reason to be afraid of playing sims if I want to pursue my GA-dream? If you have any experience of flying both sim and real planes -- please share what you think! Any kind of related information/experience is highly appreciated!
Some advice. If you are using a quality after-market plane add-on, you should be able to undock some of those telltales you are keeping the software panel on the screen to see. You should be able to undock and place these on the screen just along the top of the eyebrow then remove the rest so all you see is the outside of the plane. Also, if you can undock an element, you should be able to rig an arduino to run physical telltales into your physical panel in the location of the actual ones. Black Friday is coming up. Seriously consider getting a couple more monitors to give you some peripheral sight-picture ... if your graphics card can handle them. If not, budget for a beefier card, a second card in SLI, or gang in a second computer whose sole job is to handle exterior visuals. (It's possible to go into the windows settings and spread the work across all real and virtual cores in both computers) It really makes a difference, compensating a bit for the lack of force-feedback and the physical sensations of flying. If you accurately zero the yoke for level on the ground, in flight you should be able to just let go of the yoke and it will return to it's zero setting. If the sight-picture and gauges indicate that the plane is ascending or descending due to flight factors, trim until they reach the desired attitude. Saitek makes (made) a power/props/mixture nob unit with vernier functionality, but they have become hard to find for some reason. HA! I just found one on craigslist !!! Crazy high price for what used to be about US$75 ===> ( tinyurl.com/y3xms3a3 ) or ... ==> ( tinyurl.com/y5evr2nv ) Lastly, there are USB programmable button panels so you can get the keyboard out of the panel area.
Why do you have the panel on your screen as well? Your PC screen should just have the "window" view, because your avionics are on the avionics panel you built - dont' waste that screen real estate
We can get it anywhere in the contiguous U/S. if you can provide an address - We just can't deal with getting it across a border - if you take if from there and handle your own import / further shipping that is up to you. Be advised, it will likely be coming on a skid, and we are expecting the shipping to be $500+ due to size / weight and the requirements for packing it up.
on your giveaway it requires you to use Instagram, I have it only for these reasons. I do not use Instagram because i find it inefficient and confusing even though I am a IT Pro.
It’s kind of an honour system really - we aren’t going to take the time to confirm you followed on insta. So go ahead and enter regardless, but it sounds like you did do the step anyway..?
Not to be mean or anything but have you not been “working” on your instrument rating for quite some time now? I just came into flight school with my private and got my instrument rating a little over a month in. I realize you’re not going to a flight school and you have other things going on but I think you could have gotten it done a lot sooner if you stuck your head to it! Get it done!
Love it! Thanks. Any tips for a quick way to calculate fuel available?
@@FlightChopsI round the numbers to make it easy, it doesn't have to be perfect. The seminole I did my flight test uses 20.9 Gallons per hour. I round it to 20. 45 mins reserve + 15 mins for the approach = 1 hour. So fuel on board divided by 20 minus 1 = Hold time. I told the examiner that for the flight I prepared the calculations I had 20 mins for holding but for the actual flight we could hold for an hour. I hope this one helps
Diego KF Why not round consumption up instead of down for safety?
@@LIamaLlama554 Because I over calculate on the times for the approach. So they compensate each other. And it is easier to divide by 20 than by 21. It is an approximation, not an exact number
Diego KF great tip.
I like the addition of more sim videos, helped me find your channel
Sim time is huge for instrument training. It’s way cheaper than a real airplane and usually (from my experience) more sensitive/twitchy. That last part really helps you get down fine control inputs and makes a real plane a little easier honestly because it doesn’t move around so much on its own.
I've found this. Using the sim for PPL training actually hindered me, but having started instrument training in the UK I made massive progress just between my first two lessons by using a sim.
I always liked thinking of the "big knob" and "little knob" as "short knob" and "long knob". Helped me clear up a lot of confusion.
I finally get how using your hand to visualize your holding entry works! Thanks!
Holy Cow - heck of a generous thing to give! Thanks Jim and sporty's!
Trying to prep G1000 time and familiarity!
Love these detailed insights
@@FlightChops, don't let Blake feel to bad about that LOC capture and tracking. This is me in a Redbird LD going bonkers with a failed vacuum system. X-Plane wheel screech is ridiculous. Also, trimming for straight and level is way harder than real life (C152) in my experience.
The default sounds are kinda sucky anyway
I loved watching this with the mistakes and all... learning IFR is hard, it's not easy. Task saturation is a huge thing... Nice video
You can use Navigraph to update your Sim databse
FlightChops I would recommend a Ch Yoke or Preorder Honeycomb yoke they are much better than saitek yoke just my 2 scents. Also I would highly recommend the Cessna 172SP Skyhawk from AirfoilLabs as it appears to have the features you are after that are absent from the default cessna 172
CH yoke would not work because of the throttle on it.
Nice setup. Getting close to taking your IFR checkride? Took me 2 years and what a relief but I’m starting my commercial.
just a heads up you can link your iPad w/ Foreflight up to X-Plane. So you can geo-reference yourself on those charts, it works great.
They are georeferenced in the video.
If I remember with x plane 11 if you press the D key it aligns the DI with the mag compass then you can just click don't show again/understood.
Awesome as usual. I'm an aspiring instrument student. Always learning great stuff watching your content.
Happens fast - Phrase of the day. Definitely true and is why sims are invaluable.
Awesome!!! I had been missing you
Yeah thanks :P . It has been a bit of a crazy couple months...
Couple of tips Steve from someone else using the XP11 172 to mirror real world training:
- there's a free add-on for the 172 that greatly increases the realism by tweaking some of the flight characteristics. If I remember right it fixes the flaps 30 attitude to be more like the real thing and gets rid of the silly screeching tires
- there's another add-on that will remove the 530 and let you run a single x430 and replace the x530 with the old Bendix style radio stacks
- toebrake2yaw is a great plugin that lets you bind the rudder pedals to the toe brakes to give more realistic ground handling if your pedals are like mine and don't have a seperate toe brakes axis
- you can set view hotkeys in the basics>quick views under keyboard settings. I recommend setting the numpad for quick views over the glareshield, down at the mixture/AP controls
I have more 172 goodies but those are the main ones I remember off the top of my head.
I need to get down to Toronto and check this thing out. Keep the updates coming.
nice video, and welcome back
Tough choice, of course it's a good idea to learn basic steam gauges, but glass suites are becoming more and more commonplace, especially considering that glass gauges can save lives.
You're doing the best thing there is to learn faster: trying to teach what you know to someone else!
As I say when training people at work: You don't really know a thing until you can teach it to someone else.
On the compass error message, just check the box “don’t remind me again” and hit ok.
Or wait a year for FS2020 🙃
Actually, that's a new'ish feature in X-plane. There is now a setting to allow you to sync the gyro (which is necessary in real world aviation).
He did a video about pilots edge three months ago
Fyi you can get a piper arrow for xp11 (its a PA28) that has the same dash as your plane if that helps any.
That would be awesome actually! how do I find that?

Cheers
Hey there is an easy download of the gns430 with radios instead of the 530 and 430. Really easy to do. Check xplane forums.
I knew you guys would be able to help!
So I can like modify the virtual panel to make it talk to my RealSimGear unit "better" so that the 430 is the primary nav/com?
@@FlightChops yes exactly. It uses the 430 in the sim directly as the primary and ur radio stack as the radio stack in the sim.
I highly recommend using track IR!
FS2020: our graphics are so good you can VFR the whole globe
Flightchops: uses it only for IFR training and looks at nothing but instruments
I'm excited to see where FS2020 goes, but until it's released and we get our hands on it it's not worth considering or holding off getting another sim on. The flight models in X-Plane aren't perfect but FS2020 is a total unknown at this point.
Tell him every pilot forgets their alphabet when trying to dial a 430/530 in lol. I'm singing my ABCs every day
When I practice on my sim or have a safety pilot in the plane, I use paper plates.
FlightChops: Crazy real home simulator!
DAL213: Are you approaching me?
I can provide no help whatsoever. But you knew that.
I don't know if it works with xplane but Steve if you go to navigraph.com they have nav data thats relatively up to date
When the guy kept saying Burlington I thought you were in my neck of the woods KBUY 😂😂
I think I saw the warning that your gyro was not sync'd? That would make it harder to hit the heading for your track. ?
Yeah - but we kept trying to set the HI to match the compass and the warning never really went away... not sure what the deal is with that
@@FlightChops The warning is valid only for the instant it was created.
I see you're staring in the new Call of Duty game!
I knew someone else thought this too, I found you !! xD
Cool video, good to see. Any input on how much $ you have into a system like that? Or what you’re using. I’m not super tech savvy, I have a really simple sim setup but I’m the end I understand the plane not the computer so I go out to learn from that. It has no pause though lol which could probably be helpful
Would love that TD2 for air Cadets!
Can you just fail the Garmin 530 in the sim to get the 430 to feed the needles? I am a total novice. I just thinking out loud as I'm watching your workaround.
I also have issue with the trim in X-Plane.... glad to know I'm not the only one. Tips?

Hope you don't mind I ask a question down here in the comments :)
I've become a little bit obsessed with GA recently and early next year I hope to start sailplane courses with an end goal to get a PPL eventually (I'm 30+ if it matters).
Any kind of related information/experience is highly appreciated!
now deliver some jdams on target, after dodging sam's and land on the carrier at night in dcs
So glad my instrument check ride is done 🙌🏻
Congrats! I can’t wait to be able to say that :)
FlightChops your getting there!
Crazy high price for what used to be about US$75 ===> ( tinyurl.com/y3xms3a3 )
or ... ==> ( tinyurl.com/y5evr2nv )
Lastly, there are USB programmable button panels so you can get the keyboard out of the panel area.
I really need to look at undocking - I honestly didn't think you could do it!
This may have been asked and answered, but how do you update the realsim garmin with current approaches?
Download Navigraph to update your nav data
You've got links to everything but the SIM... X-plane? totally lost here.
Sorry - If you're new to the channel, here's the previous video where we build the sim:

I think it is awesome that this flight instructor is Eric Clapton
Outstanding.
Were did u get the sim
Love it!
Why do you have the panel on your screen as well? Your PC screen should just have the "window" view, because your avionics are on the avionics panel you built - dont' waste that screen real estate
That is one amazing prize, shame its U.S entries only, what if a participant was willing to pay shipping costs outside the U.S ?
We can get it anywhere in the contiguous U/S. if you can provide an address - We just can't deal with getting it across a border - if you take if from there and handle your own import / further shipping that is up to you. Be advised, it will likely be coming on a skid, and we are expecting the shipping to be $500+ due to size / weight and the requirements for packing it up.
Yea Im drooling for a setup like that too but knowing full well that customs would be a real challenge.
Did you know you can link foreflight and x-plane together!
on your giveaway it requires you to use Instagram, I have it only for these reasons. I do not use Instagram because i find it inefficient and confusing even though I am a IT Pro.
It’s kind of an honour system really - we aren’t going to take the time to confirm you followed on insta. So go ahead and enter regardless, but it sounds like you did do the step anyway..?
@@FlightChops Yes Sir we did, where are we going flying together? and how is the RV coming not see any updates?
Are you gonna get Microsoft's new sim for your home cockpit when it comes out? Look's very realistic.
You need a TrackIR so badly for that nice setup. look it up you will thank me later
OMGosh, I could totally use that and cut my time with my flight school.
3rd comment! Keep up the great work! I’m training for my PPL! Any tips?
Hey dude, can’t wait to finish the video

Did I miss a swear? I thought I got them all (Blake was a little flustered at times :P)
@@FlightChops It's quiet, whispered under his breath, but I did catch on in first watch-through.
@@thatdude3943 Ah well... whatcha gonna do..? It is what it is.
