I went to Paris two years ago for work. At first, when ordering food, I was speaking English and I found that the staff we not very friendly. After two days I relied on my not so good high-school French and tried to order food in French. Two things happened: 1. The staff were a lot more polite. 2. Most would straight away switch to English! 😆 Basically, I learnt that French people are very friendly if you make a little effort to speak French and they are actually more than happy to converse in English, if they see you’re struggling with French!
Its a common thing throughout France, they don't like the expectation they will speak a language that is not theirs... so they prefer to see our struggle to learn their language than default to English. Et pourquoi pas? 😄😄
Don't forget that Paris doesn't represent France. If you want to see the real France, come in Auvergne and you will see the real population. Usually, nobody in France likes Parisien

This is a good attitude to have. It should be expected that when people come to YOUR country, they could at least TRY to converse in YOUR language. It's the respectful and non arrogant thing to do.
People should b nice no matter the language you use.
However according to ghandi when you tried to speak francais, that went to their hearts. 😁😆
I fully agree with "Scaredy" below. I have been studying French in Sancerre at a French immersion course and enjoyed it so much that I rented an apartment for a year. I do pretty well with ordering a baguette and a pain au chocolat. And if you try to speak French in the tiny town of Sancerre, the local people are very nice and will help you. When I tried to order a mille feuille, one of the best sweets ever!, the proprietor of the boulangerie had a great time trying to teach me how to pronounce those words! They appreciate you at least trying. But, it's like that in our own country, right? Whichever country in which you live. If tourists at least try, bad as their attempt may be, their trying is appreciated.

When ordering something in a bakery, we often say "Je vais VOUS prendre une baguette" which is something like "I will take a baguette from you"

Je confirme firme depuis la Belgique que la formule "Je vais vous prendre..." est typiquement française. C'est ainsi que parle le peuple de France.

Bonjour! When I was in France, ordering some things at a bakery and tried using my French but when I added my fingers, to show how many, they laughed because we count on our hands differently. (Americans use their first finger for one, in France, the thumb is used to show one; in America, we use the first two fingers and in France the thumb and first fingers are used.) I think this information is very important, and could be shown easily. Thank you so much, I'll continue to watch and learn! Merci beaucoup! :D

I laughed waiting in line at the local Boulangerie. A native French speaker in front of me asked clearly for a baguette and the server slumped her shoulders and started running through the options... normal, tradition (smaller, crustier, slightly darker crust... this makes awesome sandwiches), restaurant (bigger, fluffier... pretend this doesn’t exist), sourdough (omg), grain mixes and coatings (like linseed or sesame sprinkles)...

It was difficult watching this episode. Not the French, but looking at the bakeries and products. Where we live, there is nothing like that and it made me hungry, despite the fact that I have just eaten dejuneur!

La tradition est un peu plus petite et fine mais on la considère en générale meilleure. Elle a moins de mie et est plus croustillante et goûtue

Effectivement dans cette situation "que l'on mange" (que tout le monde mange) est correcte, "qu'on le mange" s'emploie si tu t'adresses à une assemblée en étant vindicatif en parlant d'une personne "qu'on le mange et que l'on jette les os aux lions!!" :)

Very good question! Many people get confused between the relative pronouns "qui" and "que". Actually here it has to be "qui" because it is the subject of the relative sentence. => Le prix QUI est octroyé (the price that is decided). In relative sentences "qui" always have the function subject, and "que" object, regardless of the human or non-human characteristics ;). Hope we made it clear!

Francis Santora les règles de fabrication de la baguette tradition sont plus strictes : elle ne doit pas être congelée et ne peut pas contenir d'additifs. Donc normalement, elle est meilleure 😊 mais aussi un peu plus chère

Thank you so much for making this video, this is what I wanted to know when I walk in a bakery try to order something. My experience was that after I said "je voudrai un croissant, s'il vous plait", then got totally lost when the owner of the bakery said something to me. Are there many flavor choices of croissants?

Maybe the baker asked you if you wanted a "croissant au beurre" (Butter croissant) or a "croissant ordinaire" (ordinary croissant)? 🥐

Peter Fonash merci! La baguette tradition a des règles de fabrication plus strictes. On ne doit pas la congeler ni ajouter d'additifs. C'est pour ça qu'elle est souvent meilleure et un peu plus chère!
