I have used clove oil with success at keeping greenfly away from beans.i have rosemary plants around the garden which I often brush past and I think that helps to keep some bugs away and I grow mint in pots around the garden. Marigolds is another one I try grow to deter bugs but helps the bees. I disperse clove seeds around the garden including in the grass and the garden smells lovely as you walk around. No chemicals here is needed not even toxic washing up soap is used. Been using this method for years, my dad was very keen not to use any chemicals when he used to garden .We barely get any problems with plant destroying bugs or midges. Hope this helps other gardeners. Companion planting is very beneficial.
cloves. I need to grow this thanks for the inspiration. gives me something to do today too since I realize I know very little about cloves at all even if it will grow around here.
I have an indeterminate tomato growing alongside and draping on a rosemary plant that is 4 years old and still producing tomatoes. 😀 The symbiotic relationship is amazing. This video helped me realize what has helped it grow so well.
What adorable affection !!! :) I believe that plants have great relationships w each other. It's "proof in the pudding" (an ole adage) or "Grounds in the Garden" LOL Tks for sharing this..... wish we could send photos to TH-cam fav Channels :):):)
I looked online for what oils are good at repelling or eliminating garden insects and found that most that have a heavy smell should work. Peppermint, eucalyptus, cloves, cinnamon, rosemary, and tea tree oil all are claimed to help rid the garden of common bugs. I found one from Dollar general called "Defense" that has lemon oil, eucalyptus oil, cinnamon bark oil, rosemary oil, and clove oil. Also picked up a peppermint oil as well. Have not used either yet but I am hoping for the best. ANd.....I will post what results I have at the end of the season.
This is GREAT..... Merci Beaucoup, Muchas Gracias, and Grazie Mille (my Heritage which I adore and love to honer :):):) I am an old gardener, herbalist, and essential oil aficionado (80 in yrs and 75 in gardening :) Many BLESSINGS to you and all in your Gardening. Greatly appreciate this informative video!! I have rosemary and peppermint essential oils here. I’m about to make the mixture because I did cut some leaves from my different garden plants. I sprayed the cuts with cal mag because I saw that from a tomato plant video, I treated my tomato plant. I also treated all my garden cuts. Now, I learned something new and improved. Thank you Gary.
Great information. Planting collards, kale, broccoli and spinach (not together) and this is just the information I need. They are healthy now and I want to keep them that way!
I've used peppermint oil for my indoor plants for over a year now to keep bugs away! Works well! Calathea's are a bit more sensitive though, that's the only kind of plant that has had a bad reaction to essential oils I've used.
Good to know. And yep some might react. Glad most can take it. Please visit my seed and garden shop www.therustedgarden.com for all your seeds, seed starting needs, neem & peppermint oil and more. Thanks!

I'm big into essential oils and glad to see this as I just asked someone on another site and comment as She used orange peels. I had asked if She knew anything about use of essential oils in it's place. So glad I came across your site. Thanks will be trying out.
Thank You! I have sterilized my peat moss this year and made the starting mix you did and my seedlings are the best ever so will definitely give these oils a try. Also have been using the worm tea that you and Calikim recommend.

I'm keeping a notebook on what I am doing in my garden now that I recently stared planting edibles. So I'm taking quick notes and writing the recipes on the back cover for a quick easy access to them. I just took a couple of leaves from my plum tree to the expert to see if the damage was bug or fungus or what. When the lady told me it was bugs I knew what to do. Before planting anything in the fall I purchased the right neem. I had just seen your videos on using the right soap and neem so I made the mix sprayed few leaves and waited 48hrs. I was so anxious, 48hrs seemed so long. When I saw no damage, I went to town spraying my trees. I am so grateful, thank you Gary, much appreciated! :)

So glad I stumbled on this channel! What do I spray on my mint plants? If bugs don't like the smell of mint why are they eating up all of my spearmint and mint?

Thank you so much Gary. I've used peppermint oil in the past and enjoying using it. It really helps keep in the aphids away. I do have trouble keeping spiders away though. I have planted mint (it didn't say peppermint though) and I actually saw webs in the plant. I live in a very wooded area in the Poconos, so any advice for those wolf spiders, is much appreciated. I never tried Rosemary and I'm looking forward to trying it. I want something that's going to get rid of those pesky pest but attract those wonderful bees.

Great Video, Gary. Does the peppermint oil keep pollinators away? I need pollinators, so I don't want this to drive the few I have away. I was also wondering if you could combine the Neem oil and the Peppermint oil together as a weekly spray. Thanks.

Can you mix peppermint, rosemary and orange oils together in one spray bottle or do you have to have them in all separate bottles? Also do you have to mix soap with oils or can you just use the oils? Thank you so much for your videos they are extremely helpful and detailed😊💞
The first 2 you can. I havent used orange oil a lot on plants Please visit, The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.therustedgarden.com/ - Seeds, Starting Supplies, Neem Oil, Peppermint & Other Oils, Calcium Nitrate & More
Just rinse them really well. It's an organic pesticide. You literally should reapply after a good rain, or any watering from above, as water washes it off. I swear by it. White moths are all about my cabbages this season, and I'm regularly using my neem oil to keep them at bay.
Hi Gary. Thank you for all the wonderful information you supply. I just made the peppermint oil spray as something is nibbling at my basil plants. I planted some more basil the way you suggested in the video when you were visiting your son. Thank you so much for the inspiration . Btw I hope your hand is ok. I borrowed my husband's drill after seeing your video. You saved me a trip to the ER. I have a question for you, not sure if you have answered it in a previous video as I just found your channel. A couple of my tomato plants' leaves are curling. I am on Long Island and we have gotten plenty of rain of late. I don't know why they r doing this. Any ideas? Christina
My cut is healing. Very glad to help. The drill was wise. Curling leaves are normally due to Nature and the environment. You can really do anything and the plant typically works it out.
Hi Gary, I'm a new gardener and would love a copy of you paperwork to help me out, I planted some squash and egg plants keep finding little red balls on them I believe they are some of bug eggs. I love your video. I use peppermint oil but I didn't know that I should add soap to make the spray. I also didn't realize my spray had a shelf life. Do you send the articles when a customer orders from you?
I'm trying to get info on using peppermint oil on succulents. They're easily infested by Mealybugs, Aphids, Spider Mites and Scale. I'm excited to hear it works on Spider Mites since those are what I battle with the most. I just want to be sure that I don't kill my succulents. Neem oil is the most recommended, but I just can't tolerate the scent. Do you recommend using the same measurement of ingredients as you use for your garden plants?

Using what I had in the cupboard, and a small prayer, I mixed a bit of lavender scented soap (Dr Bronner's 18-in-1 Hemp Lavender Pure-castile soap) into a 16oz sprayer. It stinks pretty, but barely. After 2 applications to the underside of my aphid-infested tomatoes and curcubits, haven't seen any other infestation 2 weeks after last treatment. I'm beginning to see the white moth and holy cabbages now, so I'm going to give this a go and hope for the best. Oh, no damage noted to plants treated.

I have a potentially stupid question - does using essential oils on plants alter the flavor of them at all? I was discussing this with a co-worker, and while I assume the answer is no, I wasn't sure and thought I would ask here :) Thank you so much Gary for all your helpful information!
Not in the long run or if you wash them. Nothings seeps in to them. If you spray your greens that day then eat them you would notice some mint. After a few days no.
Why have you got 6 types of soap or detergent there? I use some liquid black soap or savon de marsaille. This helps the oil to dissolve and pass better through the sprayer.
Interesting that you say that Peppermint oil repeals white fly. I currently have an infestation of white fly on my Mint plant so I would have thought that they would stay far away from this. I am just using soapy water spray as a means of "downing" them when I ruffle the leaves and the fly take to the air.
I could be wrong but aren't Mint and Peppermint different species of plants? Another part of the issue I think is that the EO's used in the making of the spray are much more concentrated than they are inside the plant. I'm sure it take more than one plant to produce the amount of EO in one of those dropper bottles.
Interesting comment in regards concentration ...worth trying out to see if the peppermint EO insecticide spray as prepared by Gary has an effect on the white fly harboring amongst the Mint leaves. Need to give this a test.
I have peppermint plant that we never used (everything taste like toothbrush lol). I want to boil them instead of using peppermint oil, does that work? and how much to use to how much ratio of water probably?

My only question and concern is that the Peppermint Oil spray is what need for my aphid and whitefly problem, but everything I am finding says it repels honey bees and bumblebees. I don’t want to repel my pollinators, I want to attract more but rosemary oil isn’t listed for both these pests. I don have a lot of herbs growing around my garden that do attract the bees but will the oil spray affect this?? Thank you!

So when you mixed the peppermint with the 16 oz of water in the bottle you still didn't say how much dish soap that you used. So how much dish soap do you add to it to the bottle with the peppermint

You mention combining peppermint with Rosemary and quip about Neem but you don't speak to it specifically. Can one use peppermint and neem together (in similar doses as this vid and the previous one on neem)?
I haven't tried. In theory yes. The question might be using neem where it is not needed. The plants I might spray rosemary and peppermint on don't need it in my zone. But if you want both on a specific plant I don't see it being an issue. As always test spray your new combos.

Thanks Gary! Love watching all your videos. I have been making my own Neem oil spray for my garden for a few years now and I use Neem Oil, Dr. Bronner's Organic Sal Suds Soap, and drops of Rosemary and Peppermint Essential OIls (EO) . I am curious if you or any of your viewers have tried using Dr. Bronners Peppermint soap with Neem oil instead of Peppermint EO and opinion if I would get the same results? I have not been brave enough to try switching out because the other formula works well however, I am trying to cut costs in my garden budget this year and would appreciate your opinion or if anyone has ever tried this? Thanks!

Sounds lovely.

Tks for sharing this..... wish we could send photos to TH-cam fav Channels :):):)
Fantastic video! You laid everything out wonderfully. Thank you!
I’ll be using this method in my medical cannabis garden.
Much love my friend!
Good luck. As I saw always test spray and adjust.
Thanks
What were the results? I use oils for MANY things around the house, and have all those mentioned above.
This is GREAT..... Merci Beaucoup, Muchas Gracias, and Grazie Mille (my Heritage which I adore and love to honer :):):) I am an old gardener, herbalist, and essential oil aficionado (80 in yrs and 75 in gardening :)

I'm big into essential oils and glad to see this as I just asked someone on another site and comment as She used orange peels. I had asked if She knew anything about use of essential oils in it's place. So glad I came across your site. Thanks will be trying out.
I just got orange oil and lemon grass oil. I am testing that out now.
Great Video!!! My rose bush has holes on the leaves will this stuff work for that?
Neem oil works for chewing insects. The peppermint oil might help repel them but the neem kill insects after the leaves are chewed.
What is the best way to test a spray? On what leaves? Where on plant? How much in that location?

So glad it helped and you are doing it the right way. Notes on the diseases and insects are important too. So glad I stumbled on this channel! What do I spray on my mint plants? If bugs don't like the smell of mint why are they eating up all of my spearmint and mint?
Lol good question. You could try a soapy water spray or neem oil. Trying to id the insect is important. Always test spray first too

April G Peppermint should also repel spiders. If not, maybe add some orange oil to your peppermint spray.
NC Greenie thank you a bunch. I do have a problem with wolf spiders.

NC Greenie Yes peppermint does repel spiders and mice. I live in country setting and unfortunately have my share of field mice. Not sure that it kills them but suppose to keep them Away.
I have two huge pots of mint, one garden mint and one peppermint. Spiders spin webs in the garden mint pot but not in the peppermint pot.
Thanks a lot for this! Do these oils work on Leaf Miners as well?
Great Video, Gary. Does the peppermint oil keep pollinators away? I need pollinators, so I don't want this to drive the few I have away. I was also wondering if you could combine the Neem oil and the Peppermint oil together as a weekly spray. Thanks.

After spraying an edible plant with neem oil, how do i wash it out of vegetables before i eat them?
I'm wondering the same thing? Is Neem oil edible?
Cant really do anything that is.
Hi Gary, I'm a new gardener and would love a copy of you paperwork to help me out, I planted some squash
and egg plants keep finding little red balls on them I believe they are some of bug eggs. Thanks for all your help and information in easy to understand video.

We sell the oil. Make a batch and test it. Thats the only way to do it. But you can start with 1 teaspoon per gallon and work up the strength.

I was discussing this with a co-worker, and while I assume the answer is no, I wasn't sure and thought I would ask here :)
Thank you so much Gary for all your helpful information!
Not in the long run or if you wash them. Nothings seeps in to them. If you spray your greens that day then eat them you would notice some mint. After a few days no.
Good to know. Thanks again! :)
Why have you got 6 types of soap or detergent there? I use some liquid black soap or savon de marsaille. This helps the oil to dissolve and pass better through the sprayer.
Does this work against mold on carnivorous plants?
Interesting that you say that Peppermint oil repeals white fly. I currently have an infestation of white fly on my Mint plant so I would have thought that they would stay far away from this. I am just using soapy water spray as a means of "downing" them when I ruffle the leaves and the fly take to the air.
Well you would think. I don't have an answer.
Clive King what's the verdict on peppermint oil experiment, if you tried it?
thanks for the video Gary
Yep.
does this kill them or just repell them form eating the plant?
Repels.

Ive noticed that Rosemary Oil - 10.0% Geraniol 600 - 5.0% Peppermint Oil - 2.0% is great on fungus gnats fliers. I was just wondering if any of these were decent at killing root aphids? I dont know if those oils would kill root aphids. Only way is to try it out. That would be cool though.

Thank you!

Can tangerine oil be use instead of orange oil?
I don't know. I have been careful to work with the oils to learn from reading and experience. Orange oil seems to have a killing property to it too. Many of the citrus oils do the same thing for repelling.
Hi Gary, I only found peppermint essential oil or mint powder in my country. Can I use that? Thx thx
The oil yes. I'm not familiar with the powder.
Thank you so much
I'm out of Peppermint oil.....can I use Pure Peppermint extract that you use for baking?
It isnt strong enough. You can try but I dont know the ratios

Does peppermint extract work too or does it have to bean oil to stick to things?
It could work. But the oil is more potent and provides better coverage. Youd have to use a lot of extract and I think it would be expensive.
Thank you for your swift reply! Also thank you for all of your videos! I truly enjoy them! I have extract on hand and am not using it so I figured I could put it to good use for something besides opening it and smelling it every once in a while
So when you mixed the peppermint with the 16 oz of water in the bottle you still didn't say how much dish soap that you used. So how much dish soap do you add to it to the bottle with the peppermint
Just enough that when you shake it the oil stays dispersed for 20 or 30 seconds. Start with a few drops. Each soap varies in strength.

Will this get rid of gnats?
Best answer it might. Sorry. Fungus gnats are different than fruit fly gnats. The former are tough to get rid of.

Do any of these oils interfere with the bees?
Don't spray them but not when dry. The rosemary actually attracts them.
Will it deter the sphinx moth?
Sorry that I dont know. Some insects go by color and some by scent.

What about pure, genuine oregano oil. I know the stuff is potent, and has many uses and benefits for people. I would think it'd be more effective than rosemary oil? Oregano oil is very potent. Have you ever tried that for bugs? Thanks.
It sure is. "Spicy" stuff, haha. I have some of the pure, genuine high cavacrol content oregano oil and I've used it with avocado oil as a carrier (for myself...). It's nice. I might try it sometime as a plant spray.
Thanks.
Can you spray this on tomatoes?
I have in passing. Always test spray new sprays though and wait 48 hours.

Can you use Orange oil for a cannabis plant ?
Yes but I haven't and don't have the formulation. Sorry.
And this isn't going to affect the taste of the fruits?
It could but I harvest the day I spray when several days will go buy before next harvesting.
Thanks, Gary, looks like you do have a solution for spider mites. I sprayed peppermint oil on the one planter where there seems to be a lot of (what I think are) spider mites. I hope I can get rid of them. I'd order things from your shop but I live in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I like the spray nozzles you have too. Anything coming from outside of EU gets held in the customs and they have high customs fees and taxes here.
Ive been using peppermint oil regularly and feel it really works. You can use it weekly too.

how long will the mixture keep?
I use it up but I don't see it really having a shelf life issue. As its just the oil.
will this work for deer and rabbits
I would say no or we would have heard tons about it. ...Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed Shop. - 43 packs of seed for $30 www.therustedgarden.com/collections/my-first-vegetable-garden-seeds-supplies-discount-packages
Orange oil will attract bees like mad too. once i was using goo gone (which has orange oil in it) on our front door to get some duct tape residue off a broken window frame and several bees came in through the broken window... i ended up stepping on one actually and thats how i found out i am allergic. LOL. so beeee careful with that stuff... cuz the bees will come! in droves ... :x
I've used cinnamon oil that seems to work as well.
Oh thanks. I might try it.
When you say it repels gnats does that include fungus gnats?
Probably not. The fungus gnats are such a pain.
Sprinkling cinnamon has worked for me
Yes nice
Video
Thanks.
Thanks!
Thanks for watching! I wouldn't change what works unless it is a big price savings. I don't know how much oil the put in the Dr B. You could give it a try and watch to see if they pest show up. If so go back to the old way. ...Please check out The Rusted Garden Seed Shop. - 43 packs of seed for $30 www.therustedgarden.com/collections/my-first-vegetable-garden-seeds-supplies-discount-packages
