My grandfather used Newport Galv (we are near Stroud) in 1991 on our S2 LWB Pick up. Like yours, it was less twisted when it came back! We could noth fathoum that out. Still pump in wax oyl each year, but its solid - and I inherited it (RIP Seth), sadly, in 2018, still stinking of cigars and ahheeem, whisky. This video has taken me back to when I was 14, so thanks!
Is easy to patch up any missed bits. Buy a stick of zinc (looks like plumbers solder), grind chassis clean and brush on the zinc with the oxy. But you probably know that. Thanks Max.
I worked in a galvanising place many years ago, none of them like doing "old" stuff because if it's not been cleaned and prepared properly it contaminates the tanks. Looks good but I'd still whack cavity wax inside it just in case of missed bits.
That was my first thought too, “now it can mature safely among the brambles” - sorry, Max! And congrats to see it looking so fine, your prep work was spot on!
Looks great Max, you must be well chuffed. For some reason it's a little unsettling seeing you out and about in the 'real' world on a motorway, surrounded by the general public and modern vehicles. Maybe because in my mind's eye you exist only in this little off-grid plot away from all that stuff!
Proper job Max. Love your Capt Nemo diving kit for sand blasting. Thank you for the videos. Very much appreciated by an old dinosaur with a series 3 awaiting restoration for a young family member who spotted it in a bramble patch when visiting for the first time.
I reckon although the price sounds expensive it is actually pretty good especially when you think how much time you’ll save in future by not having to revisit rust spots. That chassis and bulkhead look great.
Would you consider doing a quick video about your life previously what inspired you to become self sufficient/living off grid? Keep up the good work Max👍

'Just got to put it back together'. that's what I'm thinking after respraying my motorbike frame lol. I think you're more capable of achieving it than I am.
I know neither channel will have the time to do this but Maximus should collaborate with Edd China, especially on Project Awesome cos that would be right up his street!
My SII LWB was too rusted to repair. Fortunate to afford a new galvie chassis with a removable box cross member. Interesting to note the differences between a SII LWB and a SIIa LWB.
I’m a galvaniser from up north and the place we’re your engine mount was, should not have been missed it should have been degreased or ground down before going in the acid id get in touch and ask them to send you some Galv spray as it’s a defect and should have been sorted out by the fetling department
Today i would like to add comment during the video, so: i paused at 0:02 and got me some food, a beer and found my best chair. This is going to be so good.... What a nice litte story, i liked it. Looking forward to the repair of the repair to get it finished. what do you think, about the difference between the real dipped galv, against the cold galv (i think it was called zinga?) Thank for the video =)
Both have their place, for enclosed sections it has to be hot dipped and it leaves a nice thick layer of zinc, on the other hand, some things you wouldn't want to dip (axle casings, cast iron) so the zinga wins out for those.
I drove my 61 lwb landrover with my trailer behind over the Severn bridge from Chepstow on the M4 back in March. Stayed on the motorway for about 30 miles, it was quite windy and the concentration levels were quite high! I had a 1946 knucklehead Harley in the trailer, and it was a relief to turn off and revert to old A roads. The galv dip must put a few stone on the overall weight?
A really interesting video. I have a galvanised chassis in my Defender 90, but I bought a new one as a replacement. Certainly you did it the cost effective way and with the bulkhead and frames maximised the cost benefit. I am still wondering if they should be painted or just left as it is ? Mine already has the body on. I still have some small things to do to the bulkhead. I hope you get yours put together this summer. Best of luck. Thanks for the video.
Its true that weld wire is a different chemistry, so the zinc coating is thicker over the welds. The steel doesn't change dimensions, doesn't come proud of the base metal, just the zinc thickness is much thicker over the weld. Its avoidable by using weld wire the same grade of steel (same chemistry) as the steel being welded.
Not long now before it's all back together and riding off into the sunset, assuming the inflating diesel prices haven't forced such things off the road that is... :P
I love the sand blasting compressor. It blow so much smoke out of the exhaust but none of it from the correct hole. Is there a rats nest in the silencer or something?
after its weathered, will you be painting over the galv ? so was it max, or the landy, furtherest out of its comfort zone on a motorway... keep them episodes coming young man !
Would you mind sharing the drill locations for the galvanisation ports/vents? I am planning to do this later this year and cannot find any information on proper drilling locations. Thank you. I look forward to your next update on this project.
Not an easy task! We made no notes, just copied over each hole from one chassis to the other. I'll try to sort something out, I'll have a ponder and get back to you.
Hello again, I've now made maps of all the holes and taken lots of hi-res reference photos. Keep an eye on my website and I'll post them all there shortly.
Thanks for sharing. How about the rust inside the chassis rails? Do you think, your galvaniser left the chassis long enough in the stain? May I ask, how much it costs to get all that stuff zinc coated again.
As shown is an earlier episode I cut sections out to allow me to gritblast inside the whole of the chassis. It cost £600ish to dip, can't remember the exact price, but it's mentioned in the video.
@@maximusironthumper Hi and thanks a lot. You give me an idea about the costs of galvanising a chassis and helps to decide, welding and galvanising or buying a galvaniced chassis from Richard's. Heinz, Germany

Good tip, I've also got the cold glav coating I used on the axels, fortunately that mount seems to be the only duff bit.

Possibly all the bumping it about on/off the trailer etc knocked it into shape… either way it’s a bonus 👍🏼 can’t wait to see this go back together.

Landrovers are fantastic, if you have an engineering degree, a garage full of tools, and love getting covered in oil and rust
You really don’t need an engineering degree. But the rest is very true.
And you don’t need lots of tools, just a set of imperial spanners and a range of hammer sizes
