I’m going down a Kate Bush rabbit hole and I can never tell what the next song is going to sound like or be about.
Oof! that is a LOOOONG rabbit hole, my dude. She didn't really stick with any one thing.
Kate isn't just a singer, she's the modern version of a medieval bard. A storyteller who's songs pull you into the tale she's telling.
WOOOW!!! This is it!!
Except nobody knows what this song means so it’s hardly a story with a narrative is it?
She's neither. She's an honest to goodness fae. Everything about her from her features to her body, the way she moves, her incredible, captivating talent, she's totally one of the faerie folk. 💜
@@DeepScreenAnalysis i remember reading about the meaning of the song it has something to do with teaching in schools at the time the D on the white hat means dumb and they used to make kids wear them that’s all I remember
YES!!!
The fact that all her The Dreaming music videos feel like fever dreams is just genius
I wish Get out of my house had one
I love that she's saying, singing out loud, just want you want shriek sometimes.
It's been my anthem for years.
Love that description!
Woah...the DREAMING album music videos...have a DREAMLIKE aesthetic!!!!! GENIUS
ps: love kate bush, hate attention peddling comments
@@cronosdimitri4584 ur the only one trying to get attention with ur unnecessarily agressive comment tbh
The critics during her time in early 80s don't understand her uniqueness and being weirdo or her craziness in the album "The dreaming" but i do, and i am amazed that kate bush was never afraid to experiment no matter what critics may say to her music, i love that she's being on herself explode, no wonder why Björk is inspired by kate
She looks batshit crazy in this.
That's why we love her.
Kate is a genius, a visionary.
Kate Bush fans, we let weirdness in
Ahead of her time

What A Wild Day We Had Filming "Sat In Your Lap" In Studio 1. I Played A Minotaur and If you listen closely at 2:00 One of the Bamboo canes I was whipping through the air to make a Percussive Rhythm with Paddy Bush splintered, and so I cracked it in half across my knee in time. Kate kept it in the record - She always did have good taste.😂
PRESTON HEYMAN i heard it
Holy shit, I can't believe this comment isn't getting more attention. Fantastic!
Preston, I had always wondered how that sound was made and if it was a whip or not. Lovely to hear the story. Any more nuggets from The Dreaming sessions?
Your very lucky to work with Kate bush I love all her music next to Gary numan and Ultravox
thank you for sharing this. I love Kate, and this era in general ... so innovative; xavant garde. The creativity was off the charts - and you were part of it.
I discovered this song as I was about to become a college dropout in the 90’s. The lyrics summed up my adhd frustrations with education, but still craving success perfectly. I love how a lot of Kate songs are about emotions and stages of life that aren’t sung about much and she cranks it right up to make up for the loss. Pop poetry I guess.
Few artists in any genre are true innovators, and for Kate Bush, innovation is as natural as breathing. Her dramatic multi-vocal narratives, complex arrangements and the use of visual symbolism and costumes remind me of Bowie...it's just a feast to watch her at work.
Kate Bush is probably one of the only people I can think of who could twist and convulse wildly in a ballerina costume surrounded by jesters and minotaurs, rollerskate around wearing a white smock and a Dunce hat, shift her voice pitch and tone from high to creepily low, and still manage to come out as a class act. Every time. Thank you to the fabulous Kate for restoring my faith in originality and inspiration.
Wow, you wrote this 11 years ago! Since then you could add FKA Twigs and Billiie Eilish to that list! And - in a dress - Harry Styles!

God, I love her... her music, words and she is beautiful.
Kate Bush is eccentric, beautiful, theatrical, nerdy, cerebral, a master musician, uncompromising and unique. She's also an actual artist, like Bowie, Eno, et al., working in an avant garde tradition with strong hints of Dadaism and Expressionism. Everything about her work is imprinted with her specific touch. While she's very sensual and gorgeous she transcends gender and isn't defined by her femaleness and her body. I'm happy that she's being discovered by a brand new generation thanks to Stranger Things.
I’d say she’s very female but her art is so good both males and females and others appreciate it - as in all great art!
@@ubergeraldine Agreed 100% I was referring to how frequently she takes on both male and female personas in her songs such as "Cloudbusting" etc.
Very well said!
Totally agree
She’s very feminine and quite female.
This woman is out of this world!!!!
Absolute genius!
😮Wow, many time signatures changes: 6/8 (6/16 + 3/8), 10/8, 8/8, 4/4 🧠
Mind blowing!🤯
@zecifrazmarcozanton She's also famous for unpredictable chord progressions.
Bush also made another song that featured an irrational time signature - the usual bar being evenly split into eleven equal values - 9 of which are only played before moving onto the next bar. underrated - Definitely not everyone's cup of tea, but a groundbreaking noughties banger nonetheless. Here's to kate's genius musicality 🥂🍻
Interesting. Pulsation.
I wish she had made more albums like The Dreaming. She was at her peak of creativity and energy on that album.
I completely agree....not many others though :(
The Dreaming is definitely one of my favorite Kate Bush albums. Definitely my favorite from her early career. But I also think that her new material is better than ever.
Me too
Absolutely. THE DREAMING is her masterpiece, in my opinion, with HOUNDS OF LOVE a close second.
I remember when I first got into Kate Bush The Dreaming was the one that stood out the most for me. Never For Ever would probably be my close 2nd.
I absolutely LOVE the way Kate screams "I'M GONNA TAKE IT AAAALL!", with those backing vocals... absolute GENIUS and so cathartic!!! Gets all my stress out just listening to it!
This song has gotten me to really appreciate Kate Bush. She has the creative spirit that is really inspiring. That piano riff has been stuck in my head and I love it.
The Dreaming is my favourite kate bush album. Ive not seen this video in like about 30 years, forgot how good it is.
"All the Love" is a another gem... especially at the end, when you hear all those people say goodbye at the end...
Kate Bush and her imagination more than a thousand. Simply awesome and incomparable! 💭😊😍😍😍❤️❤️❤️👏👏👏👏
To all the zoomers who've just disovered her these past couple weeks, Running Up That Hill and Hounds of Love, while absolutely stellar, is only the tip of the iceberg. Kate Bush has one of best discographies in all of pop music with massive variety and pure originality to be found throughout. Take a song like this, which still doesn't really sound like anything else, and there'll probably be nothing else like it ever again. The Dreaming may be her "she's gone mad" album, but beneath the spikes around the edges there is some truly profound music.
I don't have words for what I've found
The Zoomers lmao 😆
I'm part pleased and part pissed off at her current success cos I know it's just a fad in this throwaway society.
She's been my favourite artist since I was 9 and I'm 44 now and this video/track in particular still blows my mind with its sheer depth and creativity! 😍
Its more the "I've discovered the fairlight" album. After hearing this album {on cassette) I was an instant fan. I even listened to the words back then, a First for me. 🙂
@@markedfour She did use the Fairlight on the previous album "Never for Ever" though.
@@markedfour I'm fairly confident the "she's gone mad album" is a phrase she has used herself to refer to it ;)
Best album she ever made. Way ahead of its time. Probably still is.
She described it as her "She's gone mad album"

If you listen to the lyrics this song says everything about the state we are in right now. Oh my word. I mean really listen. A quest for knowledge, also a quest for a fast answer, trying to discover the truth but not caring what the truth is. It’s todays internet. Truly. She really is truly brilliant. Love you Kate. Always have. Glad you have new people.
at least the PoV in the song admits to not knowing everything ("I must admit I just begin") which is probably a very good lesson for a lot of the people who are prone to making hasty conclusions and/or believing misinformation
@@Piggy_Piggerson I know. Writing all that at her age. Amazing.
When people are deliberately posting bullshit and misleading info. and nonsense it's even more difficult to find the truth. That's for sure. Most people are too stupid to distinguish, which is what they want. What Trump wants, etc.
This song is so truthful right now. No patience for knowledge or understanding.
It's a song about her own ambition, and the struggles with it, and the various deals one must or can make with the forces and principalities. Always loved the song, the album, had no idea at the time. Take care, Kate.
Ding ding dong
This video scared the hell out of me as a little kid. The imagery was so scary at the time. but it got me absolutely hooked on Kate Bush. She could make heart pounding rhythms like this, fragile melodies like “The Man With A Child In His Eyes,” and haunting beauties like “Running Up That Hill”. The breadth of her musical creativity is just astounding. Love this woman.
I was frightened/ mesmerised.
listen to "get out of my house" - she was scary
How did a 22/23-year-old write, record and produce The Dreaming? HOW?!
The best genius ever
It's called being a hard worker. A character trait many people lack these days.
Well, to be honest , most geniuses have done a particularly complicated piece by the age of 22/23. Brian Wilson, The Beatles. If someone's not capable of it at 22/23, they're generally not going to do it unless they happen to marry a genius who gives them focussed confidence in being esoteric and commited to being so.
At the time of making a demo to pass around to the companies, Kate had a catalogue of 200-plus songs. Two of the initial three chosen were written at age 12. Along with Bowie, the two singular creative geniuses of 20th century pop.
She is a genius in all senses and ways, anyone who knows her music understands this. A true prodigy from her early years to today.
Who else expects to hear ‘ok remember’ right after?
Me too xd
Yes, another right here :))
Yes!! As someone who listens to the album on repeat regularly!
Same here there goes the tenner
Definitely, one of them albums to listen to all the way through.
The Dreaming is such a weird, weird album, and I love everything about it! I'm a weirdo too, so it fits. Sat In Your Lap And Get Out Of My House are a few of my favorite songs on there!
It's creative and uncommercial not weird
@@isobeljames1328 Her "she's gone mad" album. My favourite Kate's album, my favourite album.
The opening 10 seconds are the amazing musical hook to a song I’ve ever heard.
If you’re coming from Stranger Things - welcome to the best back catalogue ever.
... and welcome to the single most gloriously bonkers but perfect video and single of her career!
EASILY.
When Bowie died, I went over his entire back catalogue, and then did the same with Siouxsie and the Banshees and then with Rush, and they each had so much to offer, but they each had some stinkers in their discographies. With Bush it's all quality stuff from start to finish (ok, Director's Cut might qualify as "non-essential", but it's not subpar by any standards).
Here's some irony for you my mom graduated in 85 She had a cassette tape I thought it was hounds of love but it apparently it's not because because this song I've been trying to find it for a long time I could only remember what it sounded like and I couldn't remember the name of it or any of the lyrics but she had this song run up that hill and army dreamers on the same cassette tape and I remember after we finished listening to running up the hill she flipped the tape over because army dreamers was directly on the other side and then this song would play after army dreamers and then should flip it back over and then we listen to army dreamers again here it is 2022And now everybody's singing running up that hill I just love the irony of that when I was a kid and I was a kid and I was telling everybody about the song everybody got a laugh at me and now everybody's got everybody's got it To number one as well as has it as ringtones it's just it's hilarious and I grew up with My mom playing it for years was along with Cloud busting by Kate Bush

She’s so beautiful and talented. No one can compare ❤
I just found out about her and these lyrics basically describe my current life. This is what it means to be a timeless artist to be able to describe people lives even before they were born because I wasn’t alive when this song was released. I am happy I found her.
Kate is a goddess, go to #rubber band girl....
Welcome to the Family lol
You have great taste.

The beauty, the madness ,the frenzy, the thirst. A song that stands above . It is hunger, envy, greed, joy, and all that is universal to our souls. Kate Bush pulls it off beautifully. What an artist.
Kate Bush has the greatest facial expressions in her videos I've ever seen!
Genius and complex. Love you Kate
Holy sh$t!
The fact this song sounds as original and fresh today as it was when it was recorded 40 years ago says everything you need to know about Kate Bush.
My dad introduced me to this song a couple years ago as my first Kate Bush song, and I still loved it ever since.
I so love this song, and the music video too. The early 80s was such a creative and innovative time in music - I'm very glad I was there (12 or 13 at the time). This is my second-favourite Kate Bush song, after Wuthering Heights.
When MTV first played this video I thought it was the oddest thing ever. The more they played it, the more I liked it...but, didn't want to admit it to anyone. Eventually I bought The Dreaming, and it is one of my most favorite albums of all times. The older I became the more I appreciated these lyrics. Here's to the outcasts, the discontent and the odd ones.
You get it.
Welcome ❤️
loved the song but the video scared me a lot. i was young though.
Yes she is a genius to see with such clarity at such a young age.
True there is a difference between book knowledge and true knowledge. This song touches on what appears to be a very personal observation that she made very young , all of her music is very personal and are windows into her psyche. Thank you Kate for all you've shared with us. To me this song tells us what is expected of us , and what we are expected to know , and how much there is to know. And how confusing it all can be. I see the esoteric symbolism that runs through this video that takes us from grade school through higher knowledge , to esoteric knowledge , and to quote Kate, "and across the universe ".
Yes, Kate's very very intelligent 😍
This song is so powerful in every sense of the word. In my opinion it's the ultimate demonstration of the genius of Kate Bush. For me it was her absolute peak as an artist. Think of anything the likes of Madonna or Cher have delivered over the years and then compare it to this... not even close. Kate blows them all out of the water!
A year or two before Madonna's first album too😎😎😎
Before "The Dreaming" no woman had created an album or music as fully realised as this. And the fact she was a mainstream artist making such a startling album just shows she is a pioneer in adapting avant garde, pagan and indigenous mythology and her whimsical creativity.
She adopted the Fairlight CMI synth and unleashed it's potential to create the odd yet organic sounds .
This was such a modern and enriched album of sonic texture and creativity, you can only compare it to Bowie 1977 to 1980 era, but she did this without outside influence of an Eno. This was her, fully aware of her capabilities. Pagan influence, and supernatural themes is the potent power that drives the album into otherwordliness.
Any female artist like Toyah, Tori Amos, Bjork and their ilk are influenced by this to such a degree, I rank this as important as Sgt Pepper or Pet Sounds.
She kept her eyes open for an amazing amount of time in that still shot! “ when I’m king”!
Been listening to Kate Bush since the 70s. We are so lucky to be able to listen and watch such mesmerising genius.
I’m a 20 year old girl and the way this song speaks to me... sometimes you so get desperate for knowledge and success and you go literally mad. She’s close to my age here so I can completely put myself in her shoes haha.
Quite simply one of , if not the most important artists of the last 50 years. Loved this in 81 and still do.
It's wonderful that more people all over the world are discovering the brilliance of Kate Bush. The message of this song is so clever!
Absolutely. Some of us have loved her since the late 70s. She insanely talented.
Kate Bush has got range: She is capable of going from the sublime to the ridiculous effortlessly.
I love how this song is avant-garde yet accessible. A very unlikely "single" but it's catchy somehow.
What a great singer, song writer and dancer, Kate your music will live for a very long time, I only wish I could go back to the 80s, life was so much easier.
The most underrated single of Kate's. Love it!
Kate is a genius. So ahead of her time and such a trail blazer. I remember seeing this video back in the day when it was first released and I remember thinking to myself, who the hell is this and where has she been all my life, what have I been missing, this is amazingly genius!! I couldn’t get enough after that. I was hooked and have been a huge fan of Kate’s ever since. If not for Kate, we wouldn’t have artist like PJ Harvey, Bjork, Tori Amos or Thom Yorke. She had a vision and it was smart and beautiful and stands the test of time.
I have boundless admiration for her 😍
Sheer genius. My favourite Kate Bush track.
35 years later and I am still blown away every time I listen to this, and remember how we went crazy when it was played in some NY clubs. This was a song for people who knew how to count so we got some space on the dance floor...
Wish I could’ve been there!!!!
6/8 then 10/8 then 8/4 then 4/4 time ...and repeat. Amazing!
The 1980s....When music videos were nightmare dream sequences
*'THRILLER'*
hahaha! SO TRUE!!!
As a young teenager I was enchanted by this song and imagery. As a 50 something, I still am. The most beautiful creature to grace pop music
She's AMAZING! God, I love this brilliant, beautiful woman!
One of the very few artists to ever chart and be presented to the public that could write a pop song where the term ‘pop song’ is a gravely unjust approximation. She always plays to the song, but it’s stretched into a shape that suits her singular vision. Unpredictable, pure, and genuine yet with great hooks, and transitions.
A text book lesson that it’s best to leave artists to be them. If you need a team of producers to write your shit than you’re a celebrity, no artist. No compromise in music!!
The entire album is amazing. Leave it open is one of my favorite tracks. I love when the drums come crashing in near the end. It sounds amazing on a good hifi system. "Harm is in us, harm in us but power to arm".
I fell in love with Kate Bush in 1985 and I'm still in love.

Just brilliant. The top 40 badly needs more songs like this. My favourite Kate Bush song if I'm pushed....
Don’t know much about Kate but this song is so original and different it’s simply gorgeous 🤔
You'll find this a theme throughout her discography. Happy hunting.
One of the best albums I have ever heard. She has so much artistic talent it’s unreal. She deserves far more recognition. Her voice is unlike any I’ve heard and is so beautiful. She holds no energy back either. I wish I could have met her for an autograph and to thank her for the inspiration on me as a musician.
Pure musical genius and originality; There is no other song by anyone that can compare to this.
My favorite beautiful song from Kate Bush is ''Wuthering Heights (P) 1977 (C) 1978. But the one I listen more often is ''Sat In Your Lap'' (P) 1981 (C) 1981 / LP (C) 1982. For my Retro Countdown of the 1981 Worldwide Hits Songs (was 7 in late 1981), so I've made a ''Retro Countdown'' in 2021 for the year 1981 and this songs was #1 (3 weeks) and was in my TOP 5 for (12 weeks). Love the energy in the song. Very surprised that it was only #11 in UK and not a bigger hit that I thought. On my all TOP 5 favorite song, this song finished at #2 of Kate Bush career songs :)
This would air on MTV in the early eighties...
I was scarcely in high school and couldn't even begin to understand/appreciate what I was seeing and hearing...It kindly freaked me out.
But forty years later, no Kate Bush rabbit hole would be complete without revisiting this chestnut...still struggling to keep up but thoroughly entertained nonetheless.
I remember taping this off the Top 40 chart rundown back in the day. It remains one of my favourite of Kate's songs, yet is rarely played. She has been a constant in my life and always will. Definitely my number 1 female artist.
A magickal time in my life to which Kate's music added something indescribable..
Kate is the greatest (and most beautiful) music artist of all time. Incomparable.
Yes, she is!
Kate's talent for making music is completely off the scale, a true one of a kind and about as pretty as a woman could possibly be.

I remember when this came out, it was so extreme, so bizarre some people thought it was proof she was losing the plot musically and professionally. Personally, once I'd got a handle on what I was hearing I thought it was fucking genius!
She's amazing. Full stop.
it took me until my 30s to realize that kate bush is a god damn genius
this song inspired me to become more studious. I was an underachiever! It took until my forties to understand the lyrics in this song, they have helped me immensely. I took from it... When I become frustrated with something challenging: to see it as a wall to climb over. I have always been very physically activate. I never thought to see learning as a challenge.
Great comment.
This video scared the shit out of me as a kid, especially the jester's face when he shakes it in the camera.
The first time I ever saw Kate Bush was in this video. The perfect introduction. I've been in love ever since.
Love our Kate: crazy, sexy, goofy, brilliant.
