1989 was really like my year for g.i. joe. I know TMNT was really coming on strong at this point, but G.I. Joe was still huge, and considering how long the line had been going at this point its really pretty unprecedented.

I loved DIC as a kid. Now, I can see the differences but I still enjoy it for it what it is.

Scoop was another favorite of mine. I used him with Chuckles to work undercover.

Dee-Jay was a favorite of mine. He got a lot of use with Space, Snow, and my Mega Marines.

89 was my last year. The highs are high but the lows are LOW.
I started with Barbeque on a school trip to France and had about 130 figures when I checked out but things like Scoop and new Deep Six were a sign of things to come and I was done. However, Night Viper and Alley Viper are huge favourites, Frag Viper too.
The origin of Snake-Eyes story from issues 89-92 cemented those Vipers in my mind and made the new Snake-Eyes costume credible (albeit disgusting: the elements stolen from three s&m torturers). That story debuted Storm Shadow v2 too. So good.
    Desperate for Night Viper Classified...

This is when I checked out on both G.I.Joe and Transformers, the figures looked totally foreign and too futuristic for my tastes, the biggest sin was turning Stalker from a badass green beret to a kayak river boat mountaineer.

I'm with you. Way too much unpainted bright, cheap plastic. The best figures in 89 feel like carry overs from 88

Alley Viper is my favorite Cobra Troop. I love 89, it would be enough if he were the only cool fig but he's got company.

I really feel like everything Hasbro was doing to try and keep kids interested in G.I. Joe was doing the exact opposite.
They were worried kids were going to get tired of playing with their toys so they needed to constantly be putting out new different versions for them to buy. But in reality we all loved the first couple years of G.I. Joe and as things got weirder and weirder we gravitated farther and farther away because it wasn’t anything like the thing we fell in love with to begin with.
Meanwhile, kids a couple years younger, who might see the G.I. Joe’s at our house could not go out and get those for themselves because those were no longer made. They should’ve established a roster of around 30 Joe’s and 30 cobra and then just cycle those in and out of the stores. Sure, do variations on the vehicles, but don’t get rid of the main characters. The goal should NOT have been to keep children interested as they got older, the goal should’ve been to keep new kids coming up buying the awesome toys that were already a hit.
Fast forward 40 years and they’ve completely missed a huge opportunity again. My 9 yo loves my old GI Joes and I love playing GI Joe with him. If we could go to Target right now and buy them in 3.75” he’d have every one! Same for the vehicles and play sets. He hates Classified. They take up too much room, don’t have many vehicles and look like dolls. Hasbro could’ve leveraged the nostalgia of an entire generation to resell everything that they sold 40 years ago. What a huge miss.
