- Five leading men made the cut for Best Actor at the 2025 Oscars: Adrien Brody (The Brutalist), Timothée Chalamet (A Complete Unknown), Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice). But who will claim victory when the envelope is opened on March 2?
After the nominations were announced, five top Oscar experts from major media outlets debated their winner predictions for Best Actor: Gold Derby's Debra Birnbaum, Variety's Clayton Davis, The Hollywood Reporter's Scott Feinberg, Deadline's Pete Hammond, and Indiewire's Anne Thompson. Ironically, I could see a parallel to what happened 22 years ago when the 2 frontrunners split the vote and Adrien Brody won - this time, Fiennes could pull off the upset, potentially.
I don’t think Fiennes has that level of passion. I see it more of a Fraser Butler repeat
Sebastian is campaigning so well, the guy is so classy, and he is well liked. I think you are actually underestimating his chances. I think Coleman is actually on the bottom. Followed by Fiennes for Conclave (which is sad because he is so deserving of an Oscar, although, sometimes he overacts). I think Sebastian is in the middle, and has an actual shot. But ultimately, as everyone points out… it is between Tim and Adrien. Coleman is about to have Michael in 2025 and he will probably hit an Oscar for that.
Personally, I hope Timothee takes it. I think it was a more demanding performance. Plus he is coming off a three film blitz that were all excellent turns for him as an actor. Wonka, Dune, and A Complete Unknown. Also, Brody already has an Oscar, which he won at 29.. same age as Chalamet. I find the “he is young and has plenty of opportunities” argument to be antithetical to the award itself. It is for Best Actor and in my opinion, that title goes to Timothee for the year, hands down. He deserves it more than Brody.
Plus, I think you underestimate the AI issue for the Brutalist a bit. I think you are right that they won’t care that AI was used in the way that it was… however… this race is very close I believe, and the knowledge that Brodys accent was cleaned up, it may give Chalamet the edge due to his live singing performance and excellent vocalizations. I think when people are voting for this category in particular, it may actually make a difference.
I'm not even rooting for Chalamet but wasn't Adrian 29 when he won Best Actor?
Anyway it's really dumb how the academy makes Men wait for their Oscars just because they are too young. Yet they award Women as young as children age. Hollywood is so fucking weird man.
They should give it to Chalamet. I have seen all the other nominated films and Adrien Brody has already played that type of character before. I also am not fond of you guys saying only Adrien carried The Brutalist. Timothée carried A Complete Unknown as well and I think very few actors could've pulled off how he embodied Bob Dylan without flatout impersonating him. I also find it very bizzare how you say Chalamet is young and can get one later. Age should not effect an actor's chances of winning if they gave the best performance out of all other nominees.
What “type” of character has Brody played before that is like his character in The Brutalist? Are you suggesting that his character in the pianist is identical simply because they are both Holocaust survivors? Are all holocaust survivors the same?
I'm both kinda shocked and happy Tim has a chance. I had no idea until today. I have nothing against Andrien. If he wins, it's cool too. But the impact of a Tim victory will be bigger, since it will be his 1st Oscar and I do think he will win one sooner or later.
This Oscar night will be pretty interesting, actually. Maybe more than last year. The movies are not bad at all compared to last year's selection. Although 24 had 3 very memorable movies (and I'm not talking about Barbie and Oppenheimer, they're both "ok good").
adrien brody won his first oscar at 29 years old. but why timothee cant get it? if oscar gave it to adrien at the young age. they should give it to to timothee too. f**k all this critics "film expert" duh
I think & hope Adrien Brody wins. It’s just a towering, powerful performance in the stronger film. He is most deserving of the category imo.
But if Timothee Chalamat wins I would be very happy for him. His age has nothing to do with it. While I do think sometimes actors pay their dues (Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t win until in his 40’s) I just think A Complete Unknown wasn’t his best work. I didn’t emotionally connect to his performance. I appreciate it more on a technical talent level.
But I have no doubt he’ll win an Oscar very soon though - he’s too good & picking the right projects not too.
Also I think A Complete Unknown will walk away empty handed on Oscars night.
"Tim is young and has plenty of opportunities" is not something to be hopeful for. It's not an argument for anything. An actor can go many, many years without even getting a nomination. Plus, Adrien already has an Oscar.
The point being: you give an Oscar to the best performance. You don't refrain from giving anything to Tim because "he might win two in the future". That's absurd, absurd, absurd. This is an even worse "argument" when Andrien, his very opponent, if you will, got his first Oscar at Tim's age!
The more I think about what that lady said, the more nonsensical and wrong it sounds.
Correct. It's completely absurd the rules Hollywood elites come up with. An actor can also pass away unexpectedly from anything. It's super silly to say "well this person can have opportunities later".
Timothee Chalamet deserves it and has never won before. His acting, singing, guitar playing, and harmonica playing are all impressive. His range of emotions and killer Bob Dylan is awesome. A Complete Unknown has been surging at the box office, overperforming for nominations everywhere, and oddly popular among old and young viewers.
What the hell are these people saying lol. I can’t take Feinberg seriously anymore after he was obnoxious about insisting that September 5 will win Best Picture for months
Pete Hammond has on Oscar trophy? behind him? what?
Timothee
I’m listening to this again. Anne is really showing contempt to the young audience & youth V condescending
Timmy can't win, he's 29, that's too young! The winner will be Adrien Brody who won his first Oscar at age 29. LOL
