Damon was in love with Katherine not only for her looks and appearance but also her personality and the way she enjoys her life making him more free to do what he wants but she knew that and manipulated him for her pleasure. He saved her when she was nearly killed. The only thing with her is that she wanted what she can't have and that was Stefan his brother. Stefan loved her but not as much as Damon did, Stefan was willing to let her die. Katherine loved Damon but she knew that he loved her unconditionally and was so scared of falling for him and start to feel human emotions just like the line she said "Humanity is a vampire's greatest weakness".
They accept their vampire side and also the consequences rather than running away from the truth.
