    My strategy is live in the western mountain state that doesn’t mess with points and just get a great OTC elk and deer tag every year.

    I can honestly say I’ve pick up tags for elk and mule deer every year for the last 19 years, since I retired from the military, and I’ve never carried points.

    I'm a young guy from the east coast and these videos confuse me. I'm trying my best to learn with the hopes of going to Wyoming, idaho, and Colorado in the years to come. I need to find a one-on-one class for this lol. It's rocket science to a whitetail hunter on the east coast.

      There's no class. As an adult-onset hunter, it takes studying. If you need help call fish and game for any state and they will be willing to help as well. Wyoming is a preference point. If you arent ready or willing to hunt it now buy preference point until you are. Idaho is OTC/Lottery so it's pretty straightforward. CO I haven't hunted yet but plan to in the next year or two. It all depends on your budget and time as well. If you're strapped for time but can save up the cash in some states Outfitters are saved tags. You can hire a guide and learn a ton then get more into draws. Eff anyone that says that's cheating my first yr mulie was guided public land and a very nice 4x4. If you don't have the cash then look to OTC and preference point buy ins. Brady is 100% on point you can absolutely get on mule deer hunts if you know some general states and diversify. I'll hunt OR, ID, poss WA this year. Planning on ID, WY, poss CO the following.

      Me too man I'm a maryland guy hunted whitetail my whole life . I'm slowly learning bit by bit. Honestly I think OTC elk is the easiest in 2nd rifle. Also Wyoming archery isn't that hard for pronghorn

    I need to get out there and try some western big game hunting. Where I live there is only whitetail and they are not even that big. The problem I have is I didn't grow up in a hunting family so I never learned the methods and strategies for big game hunting. It's damn near impossible to learn this stuff as an adult. No one shares their techniques and/or how this stuff is done. My biggest fear is killing a big game animal and then having the meat spoil because I didn't know how to clean and harvest the carcass properly. In my opinion that would be a terrible crime and I am not willing to risk it. I won't kill any big game until I have a strategy in place about what to do with the carcass once the animal is on the ground!

    Do you not bother with applying in NM? Or is it just a roll of the dice, so it doesn’t count as part of your plan?

    • @prairiewolfoutdoors
      @prairiewolfoutdoors 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I was thinking the same thing. Assuming you are a resident as well, us getting a tag is easy. With 6% draw pool for non residents and no over the counter i get why he didn't mention it. A lot of good muley units in NM.

    • @brady_j_miller
      @brady_j_miller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Zack. I have never been able to draw a tag in NM for mule deer. I've even applied for some archery only tags with decent odds and I still can't pull a tag. So that is why I didn't included this on my hunt every year plan. There's definitely a lot of opportunity in the West, and if you're a resident of certain states, you have a huge leg up! Utah is another state that I love hunting, but tags I pursue are sometimes harder to draw there, and just don't fit in my schedule each year. Plus I'm happy to wait out in Utah and fill my year to year hunts in other states while I wait my turn. But I definitely apply in pretty much every single Western state for mule deer. I have a random goal to take a mule deer in every Western state. So hopefully I can start to cross off some of these states.

      @@brady_j_miller I'm on the Insider alot Brady looking at NM for muzzleloader mule deer hunts, specifically units that GoHunt shows as great to 100% odds of drawing each year and went way out of my way to scout one of those units this year. I was hoping you were going to mention this hunt in NM in your video here and if you have found success down there - it certainly isn't getting alot of attention. Maybe that's a good thing and I should just go for it next year. Thanks.

    • @brady_j_miller
      @brady_j_miller 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Nebraska is a great state to pick up some OTC tags. There is some private land issues you'd have to navigate and plan around to find a place that actually has some decent huntable public land. I actually had plans to go to Nebraska this year to finally experience that state. But I decided to stick around the office and work on some new INSIDER enhancements we are pushing out later this year. I'm always looking for a new adventure and trying to piece to together the puzzle of learning a new state. So eventually I'll finally get to hunt mule deer in some of these other places.

    I knew that Brady would be the man with a plan for mule deer. 🦌 As he and others know by now it’s my hope to get out to Wyoming this October for what I am planning on being a 10 day combination hunt for pronghorn and mule deer 🦌. I would do pronghorn first and enjoy that experience and hopefully get fresh camp 🏕 meat 🍖 for the following mule deer 🦌 hunt. My biggest issues are access in units that 3 points for both species would get me and finding someone to go with me on the trip from West Virginia. I am still kicking myself for not having a tag 🏷 in 2019 when I went with my youngest brother and Dad before the Idaho system went crazy.
    I have 1-3 points for mule deer 🦌 in every non coastal western state. Hopefully I can make it to each one of those states someday soon. I saw that Utah general deer is easy to draw for non residents, but I know that they get a lot of pressure. Nevada I saw that the highest percentage for drawing an early archery 🏹 with 2 points is 35%.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts Brady, my brother likes mule deer 🦌 since they can take you into and beyond elk country but are much easier to pack off the mountain 🏔. Plus tags 🏷 are cheaper for the animal that is one third to one fourth the size of an elk.

      The interesting part. I love helping other hunters chase their dreams. I've always had this mentality even before I even worked for a hunting company and just shared tips and hunts I went on with friends, family or any other person who wanted to read my thoughts. If I can help one person have a great hunt, I take that as a win. Each year I talk about ways to become a better mule deer hunter and even though I do give up some of the things I've learned, I feel like I should share what I've personally learned, as a way to give back to the hunting community.
