Rescuing an Abandoned Baby Wood Duck

  • We found this little duckling alone, wet, and cold around 6 pm on Wednesday, May 27th.
We have two wood duck boxes nearby, so we were hopeful that the mother was close and would come back and find the duckling. However, the mother usually calls the babies down from the box, so it was odd that she wasn't already nearby.
The duckling was trying to crawl and hop up huge rocks, when it fell between some and got stuck. So, I moved some rocks for it, being careful to avoid touching the duckling.
Typically, the mother duck returns to the duck box in around sunset if she wasn't already there. So, we left the duckling alone until about 10:30 pm, nearly 2 hours after sunset. When we checked on him at that time, he was still where we had left him after moving the rocks. He was still soaking wet, cold, and now he was barely breathing.
Wood duck chicks do not have waterproofing on their feathers until a few weeks after hatching. For this reason, if they get wet and cold, they can easily die from cold exposure. When we decided to intervene, and brought him into our house to get dried off, warm, and fed.
We kept him overnight, and fed and watered him again in the morning. Wood ducks and other waterfowl are protected under various state and federal laws, so citizens cannot legally raise these animals. But since we hadn't seen the mother duck again, and we couldn't send this little one back out on its own, we decided to take the duckling to a wildlife rehabilitation center.
We drove him 1.5 hours to the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center in Roseville, MN. Here, he will receive the care he needs, and hopefully be release back into the wild.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------
If you find an injured or orphaned animal, call or email your nearest wildlife rehabilitation center. Here's the Wildlife Rehabilitation Center of Minnesota: wrcmn.org/

@@michaelanderson7715 Humans are predators. The duckling is lucky that one came along that would decide to help it instead of eating it for a snack.

These baby wood ducks are built to bounce. They nest high in a tree or what ever mother decides to nest in . This little guy just got a bad bounce and bounced into trouble. The male Wood Duck is by far one of the most beautiful feathered birds you will see..

Ducklings are the most adorable little creatures :) I feed the ducks at my local park - they come up to my house in the morning - this season we've seen 70-odd ducklings grow into a beautiful assortment of coloured ducks. (in previous seasons, 99% are taken by crows)

    • @em945
      @em945 2 ปีที่แล้ว

That's interesting, thank you for that info.. I thought the little wild ducklings on our farm were maybe going to crows, but mainly foxes. It makes more sense it is crows. They are not my favorite bird, no matter how intelligent. They are such bullies.
I am glad to hear you had a good crop of ducks this year.

He was probably born less than 20 hours before you found it, considering he still jad his diamond on the beak (the spike used to break the shell, who normally fall really quick once the chick is born)

Oh my, having been stuck all the time in those rocks then nothing but a predator could have set him free, a painful freedom. It's very touchy to see it has been saved by good humans. Wish one day something similar happens to me to save a duckling somewhere, I'll probably end up adopting it, it might tag along good with my cockatiel which I also saved, she goes crazy every morning if I'm not around her lol.

Number one thing you need to do is dry off the ducks because they don’t have oil on their feathers and can die very easily have hypothermia using a hair dryer on low holding in your hand and blowing it but making sure it doesn’t get too hot or too windy then wrapping it in a microfiber towel or some thing super absorbent to make sure he stays dry and warm and put him on a heating pad... if he’s shaking his cold.
Number two important thing is to get them some sugar water mine ended up loving watermelon you can give them a little Gatorade totally flat non-carbonated Sprite if you have it or just a little bit of sugar and water mainly just enough to hydrate them and give them a little bit of energy and then you can use wet dog food or cat food until you get something more suitable for Ducks that works fine but bread and crackers as bad as any vegetable is good and they love fruit too Most likely any fruits or vegetables you have in your house would be good but there’s a few that you can’t give them so just Google it before you feed him anything main thing is to get them warm and dry and a little bit of energy in them if you want to have a chance to save them
