4:00 Yes, rubber bands degrade over time and eventually melt, even at room temperature indoors.
If anyone uses rubber bands or plastic zip ties, be sure to inspect and test them frequently, so that you don't have your egg'ies fall apart on you.
Rubber bands are only good for short term usage.
I tried bundling lots of electrical cords with rubber bands and put them in a bucket and stored them away for years in air conditioning, but when I went to get them, the rubber bands had melted into the wires. This is because they break down over time, no matter what and should never be relied on for many years of use.
I've also had plastic zip-ties break over time, for bundling wires in my computer case, but it gets hot inside the computer case and they were very tiny and thin plastic zip ties.
It will cost more, but may be longer lasting to use stainless steel metal bolts or rods with a cotter-pin or something similar to keep them together.
Another option would be wooden peg with a hole through each end with cotter-pins, but as the wood changes over time, the pegs would have to be re-made to smaller.
The downside to this, is that they have to be precise in size, whereas a rubber band, will adjust to the perfect size automatically.
So I think Rubber Bands are the quickest and most practical way, but as I said, you have to keep checking them.

You didn't say why you didn't use the flat headed push pins / thumb tacks between them, unless you were saying that you don't find it necessary.
