One point I don’t think I made clear: Effortless is supposed to be about making things easier and easier until they BECOME “effortless”. But as someone who applies nearly all of these concepts already, I can assure you, that while they all make a difference, none of them make things effortless, nor are they effortless themselves. That doesn’t mean they aren’t important -they are. This book just doesn’t do the greatest job at teaching them. P.S. I found the book Atomic Habits by James Clear to be life-changing for me. I had been trying for a year to record my first TH-cam video and I felt like I was spinning my wheels. He gives great applications, examples and solutions, it was just what I needed!
🤛 I truly appreciate you giving your honest opinion - it's like you just get me and where I am. I know you said that isn't a single book you recommend to cover what this one doesn't, but can you recommend a group of books that do? And yes I'm constantly juggling multiple things that are essential and no it isn't easy. I feel like I'm in the movie Groundhog Day, constantly asking myself why isn't this easier after all this time, why haven't I figured it out yet for myself.
Great question - in this order: Triggers, The Power of Habit, Atomic Habits, 7 Highly effective Habits, Getting Things Done, and 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership. Plus the video I dod on "prioritizing when everything is important" and my entire playlist on time management tips. LOL I CAN all get easier...but I don't know about effortless yet. Ask me in a few more years maybe. lol
I enjoyed your take on this book and can see why you feel the way you do about it. I've read both Essentialism and Effortless and have a completely different take on them. Essentialism came to me too late, as I had already been a minimalist for several years and went through the process of defining what's essential to me. I do think it's great for anyone getting started with the idea of simplifying their lives. However, Effortless was the game changer for me! While you didn't see as much value in the mindset pieces of the book, that was the part I needed the most! It really helped me get creative with how I could make things in my business much easier than they were. I'm still consciously looking for ways to make my systems work even better. I agree that the book covered a lot of things and didn't dive incredibly deeply in any of it, but it's less than 250 pages and less than $10 [current Kindle price on Amazon] so I guess I just didn't expect that from it. Instead, I look at it as a thought-provoking concept that allows me to question the things I do personally without the influence of another guru telling me what to do and how to do it. I think I'm just over books that are so matter of fact in their systems. I believe Effortless is for the person who needs the mindset shifts about how difficult things have to be or not be.
Erin! Thank you - I completely appreciate your perspective. It is so valid. While I have my views on the two books, I agree with you that they both are awesome and resourceful books that can elevate your mindset and systems.
@@TaraWagner I'm glad you think so. :) I enjoy seeing/discussing how books help in different ways depending on needs or timely circumstances. It's just fascinating to me to see what people like or don't like about certain topics and ideas. I also don't think it is a matter of right or wrong, but rather insightful about where someone is when they read a certain book.
Thank you so much for this review. I appreciate your honesty and in depth approach. With your final remarks about who this book is good for, I trust you and I think I'll give it a read. It's always good to have a reminder every now and then about how to structure your life.
Very helpful review! “Essentialism” has been a big boon to me. Your take on “Effortless” gives me a good idea of what it offers. I’m inspired by the concept and firmly believe that the things that are truest to our core selves are the things that over time come about without being forced. As to your invitation to recommend a book that helps people with the practical side of getting important things done, I think “Tiny Habits” by BJ Fogg hits the mark.
Great review! Honest perfect. I also think ramping 100s of ideas without going deep on any one of those is time wasting. He should have picked only 1-2 key ideas and work them out deeply
Tara, thanks for your frankness about "Effortless" Let me suggest the EASY button. You know the EASY button, from Staples says, "That was easy" when you press it. I am trying to get this suggestion to Greg McKeown, to help him present his ideas What do you think the using the EASY button? THANKS H
@@TaraWagner yes, I get a sense of it being motivational and to self check your working habits but there is a lack of practical application nonetheless it's an OK read however I hear Essentialism is good read, I think I am going to have to check that one. It looks like that's the author's better book.
Effortless fail! From content to reading it. I liked your tips throughout tho! Can we define effortless though? I mean most things worth doing take effort. Except for our automated bodily functions, heartbeat, breathing, etc, I’m not sure what I don’t have to focus on. Maybe having a capsule wardrobe creates effortless mornings of getting dress? Doing the one dress challenge. Would that be effortless?
Good point. And maybe that’s what I wanted more of. Super practical ways to simplify the crap out of life so that my brain calories aren’t used on things like what to wear and I can reserve them for more important matters. 😂
@@othmane-mezian I agree with your statement, and I do a lot of very hard things every day and have for more than seven decades, and that often includes reading books with complex topics. That was not the issue here. The book simply missed the mark for me. Not for everyone, I am sure. But for me.

Thank you for the review. I am half way through the book and so far I am inclined to agree.
Right? It’s good stuff but I was expecting so much more! 😆

I HIGHLY recommend Essentialism but that book also came to me at just the right moment with just the right message, so it’ll always remain my bias. 😆
@@TaraWagner ok 👌 thanks
Refreshingly balanced assessment/review. So many are way too positive.
For sure! Definitely have to keep it real. Glad you enjoyed this video.

WOW--Thank you. I had such similar thoughts about this book. It took effort to finish it--- which was probably a big red flag!
😂😂😂
Know why? Because they say If you want your life to be easy you will have to do hard things
