Although application or app is a widely used term in computing, in Configuration Manager, it means something specific. Think of an application like a box. This box contains one or more sets of installation files for a software package (known as a deployment type), plus instructions on how to deploy the software.
When you deploy the application to devices, requirements decide which deployment type Configuration Manager installs on the device.

I am starting out using SCCM myself and want to do a HomeLab with it before getting a job that involves SCCM. Though for your test machine, would you say i can create one for myself using Azure VDI there or what would you recommend? And to summarize, so when you got the file to deploy out to your test machine, did you download it first from the website into your computer so you can use it for your steps here?

Application packaging consists of creating a .MSI package or modifying an existing vendor package to suit your company's needs. For example, maybe you have a vendor .MSI that requires additional settings for your company such as a serial number or server information or ODBC information. These items can be applied to the vendor .MSI via a Transform.
Essentially, a software package is a piece of software. SCCM or MECM is the delivery method used to deliver the software to the users desktops or servers.
