Ronald "Sparky" Spiers was a HELL of a soldier, and, a real combat leader. He went on to lead quite a career in the Army. Even seeing combat as an "advisor" during the Laotian Civil War in 1962. He was awarded a Silver Star, the Legion of Merit, 3 Bronze Stars, an Army Commendation Medal, and, 4 Purple Hearts.

The story about Spiers killing the prisoners is true. It was confirmed in an interview with Dick Winters. The guy doing the interview asked Dick about this, and Dick told him about it. He said that Steven Ambrose called him one day and told him they had a problem. Lawyers from Simon and Shuster called him and were worried about potential lawsuits from some of the stories that were in the book. The Spiers story was one of them, the portrayal of Nix drinking too much was another.
Dick told him not to worry about it, he would handle it. He said he wasn't worried about Nix, he knew that wouldn't be an issue, but the Spiers story was something else. Dick said he called Spiers and said 'hey Sparky, you know those rumors that were floating around, about D-Day, were they true? He said Spiers said 'oh yeah Dick, they're true'. He told Speirs about the phone call from Ambrose and the Lawyers concerns and Spiers said don't worry about it. He would write them and letter and tell them what happened. Apparently he did just that, and Dick said it was never an issue after that, because it was true, and it's all in that file folder right over there(he said pointing across the room).
The interview with Winters is out there on youtube, which is where I got this info from. I may have paraphrased a little.

@@kyleshockley1573 to a certain extent. However there are differences. Malmedy, they had the opportunity to take those soldiers back behind the lines and throw them into camps, they did not. Normandy they had absolutely no camps, no front lines, no ability to just shuttle prisoners away so they wouldn't be a danger. I wouldn't be surprised if there were non official orders telling them not to keep prisoners because it wasn't feasible. Both were black eyes on both armies. US had anther incident in Sicily if I recall as well

    • @kyleshockley1573
      @kyleshockley1573 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@fenner1986 That is a point. Though with Malmedy, even today it's not entirely clear what happened to start the shooting, whether the Americans made a break for it, if it was an order given by Peiper to execute the prisoners, etc. And that's with survivors' testimony. Mark Felton has a good video on this describing both it and another Spears-like situation at Chenogne.
It's worth noting that Malmedy was well after D-Day and Spears. Either way it's apparent that this sort of thing was always going to become a tit-for-tat situation between the two sides with the actual guys doing the fighting and dying, regardless of how it started. Especially given the character of the SS Divisions and what they were known for even then.
I'd thought about adding "in the heat of battle" in the first comment since things like this are a given whenever the State asks a person to kill. And who will hold accountable the statesmen that put those men in that situation in the first place, or who gave the orders to get rid of excess baggage? Maybe that's outside the scope of a Hollywood team of writers or directors, but I think it's f*cked how they will present and almost lionize or make sympathetic the triggerman to a mass execution. Simply because he's one of the good guys. If the POWs shot down were SMERSH counterintel officers, or IJA soldiers - who in the end had more blood and depravity on their hands than most anybody else of WWII - what would the cinematic treatment of that had been? Or if the executioner were anybody other than an American or a main character.
Decades later and we have even former Soviet soldiers (few, it's true) who speak with remorse or shame of the things they witnessed the Red Army doing, what they didn't prevent, or what they themselves did. That's their Golgotha. I don't think Hollywood or Winters do history or posterity any favors by playing off manslaughter or even premeditated murder as "Oh well, wasn't me!"

    • @badsekt0r1121
      @badsekt0r1121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

I wonder why this keeps coming up so much tho. According to the findings of German historian Peter Lieb, many Canadian and American units were given orders on D-Day to take no prisoners as it would hinder or even jeopardize their mission objectives which were crucial to the success of D-Day. This is especially true for Airborne units, they simply had no option to take prisoners, there were no POW camps, or even frontlines at that point as they were operating deep behind enemy lines.
I believe Speirs was just following those orders to the letter.

  • @benschultz1784

Many people who were aware of the situation have pointed out that Norman Dike was a fine soldier who was essentially thrust into a position of command that he was absolutely not prepared for - and his reaction is an entirely human one. But during the Battle of Foy, his falling apart was not from cowardice of incompetence, but because of the fact that he was wounded. He had been shot in the chest very early in the attack. His confused collapse and incoherent breakdown during the battle was caused by blood loss and shock. The heavy cold-weather gear he had been wearing hid the fact that he had two bleeding chest wounds from his fellow soldiers. The real situation wasn't found out until Dike had been evacuated to the nearest aide station after the invasion of Foy was over. Since the men of Easy Company never saw Dike again, they merely assumed Dike was just being Dike again.

Very nice review. I am enjoying watching you discover this amazing series. I know a lot of people have already mentioned the differences in Dike from reality to the series so I will not go into them in detail. I think they were just trying to use that character to demonstrate that not all the officers were good. Just makes you appreciate even more how good Winters and Compton were.
Interesting note on Compton, in the book that the series is based on it does not talk about him breaking down mentally. There is only a very brief mention of him being taken off the line for Trench Foot. Stephen Ambrose the author originally had it in the book but when he gave some advance copies to living members of Easy Company at the time. Everyone of them told him to take it out that he was not going to embarrass Compton like that, and if it was not removed they would stop cooperating and make him remove anything they had given him. Such respect and loyalty over 50 years later shows just how close these men were.
Recently the screenwriter for this episode talked about it in an interview. He only knew what was in the book, so he wrote and outline of the episode and showed it Compton. It was Compton himself who said "I never had Trench Foot, I cracked". The writer asked him if it was okay to use in the episode and Compton told him yes because it was the truth and he wanted the real story told. AMAZING Man!

A Luger does not have a modern "positive Safety" that actually blocks the firing pin, It has a small piece of metal that moves in a way to halt the trigger connection. He made the mistake of chambering a round and putting it in his waistband. The tight pants squeezed the Luger in an odd way and set it off. Something of a design flaw in the 1908 Luger design. The Germans already had switched to the P38 pistol. Which was why a "Luger" from WWI was a hard to find souvenir in WWII. . . Older officers did not want to switch pistols.

Band of Brothers did Lt. Dike really dirty for no reason.
He was awarded a Bronze Star in September 1944 for leading a scattered group of parachutists to defend a critical road junction for repeated and superior enemy attacks while surrounded. He was awarded a second bronze star in January 1945 for personally, in full view of the enemy, under constant fire, three wounded members of his company. During the attack on Foy (according to Easy Company man Clancy Lyall) Lt.Dike was wounded in the shoulder and unable to continue. He was taken to the rear and to a field hospital. When he recovered he was transferred to headquarters, promoted to Captain, eventually becoming aid to General Taylor. After the war he would marry, have children, earn his law degree from Yale, have several successful business ventures, serve in the Korean War, retire to Switzerland and die there in 1989.

They did Dike dirty in this episode he wasn’t nearly as incompetent or cowardly as they portrayed him to be. He earned a medal earlier in the war for his part in rallying men for a strategically important defense during the miss-drops. During the attack on Foy he was shot and wounded and lost a lot of blood which made him woozy and incoherent however with all the layers of clothing it easily wasn’t visible. He stayed in the military and fought in Korea. He may not have been the most inspiring leader but he wasn’t a bad one.

Much like the Blithe story I feel that Ambrose relayed too much on the recollections of the soldiers and did not do enough research himself, which as a historian he should have done. The way they portrayed the same situation for 2 soldiers is telling. Both Dike and Compton, in the show, suffered from shock but one was heroic and the other shown as a coward.
But in a way that makes the show good as well, because it shows human nature and how people remember things. they remember their friend with compassion and the outsider with contempt.

They were right. This one is a handful. Bastogne is something that's hard to wrap your head around, no matter how many reports, movies or tv shows you've found that try to explain it. Unless you were there, I don't think you can ever really know. Those men carried that weight for the rest of their lives and helped one another to do so.
I was raised in a military family and I've always been able to recognize a good officer. Like many others, I would follow Winters if he said we were raiding the gates of hell, and I can't imagine a military man that would feel any different. I have a similar opinion of Spiers. That man was one heck of a soldier and an extremely good battle field commander. Very interesting military career.

I think it would be fair to mention that Norman Dike was not a coward. While Band of brothers is one of the most historically accurate show about WW2, there are certain points that didn't happened or were different in real life. This is one of them.
Firsthand accounts show that Dike was not a well-liked officer during his command of Easy Company, but he was by no means the cowardly and ineffective officer that was portrayed on screen. During the attack on Foy, Easy Company trooper Clancy Lyall saw Dike get shot in his right shoulder. Omitted from the on-screen depiction, this wound inhibited Dike’s decision-making and caused him to panic. Furthermore, Dike won two Bronze Star Medals for valor earlier in the war; one in Holland for organizing a hasty defense against, “superior and repeated attacks”, and another at Bastogne where, “…he personally removed from an exposed position, in full enemy view, three wounded members of his company, while under intense small arms fire."
Keep the good videos coming :)

4:05 Nixon attended Yale, but left to join the army before he could graduate.
Speirs did shoot one of his own men. The latter was a sergeant, was drunk and belligerent and not obeying orders, and when the sergeant aimed his weapon at Speirs, Speirs shot him. It was ruled righteous self-defense.
7:00 I was always surprised that Toye and Guarniere didn't bleed out, given that their blood vessels had literally been cut in half.

I don't know if it's obvious, but you should keep in mind that any officer who fails, is failing at a very high level. These are elite soldiers. Lt. Dyke actually won a Bronze Star during the retreat in episode 4. And another in Bastone.

The toughest episode is coming up. Episode 9 is a tear jerker. Episode 7 was hard as well. FYI, the run Speirs made was much farther in real life. After you finish the series, make sure to watch "We Stand Alone, Together" the Band of Brothers documentary that features more interviews with the real soldiers of Easy Company.

Of all things in this show - they did clean Speirs up a bit - and make him more palatable for home viewing audiences. In reality, there was little ambiguity behind his actions, and he's pretty open about having executed POWs, including unconcerned with it appearing in Ambrose's book, after Winters had checked on the authors behalf.

I have viewed a couple of your reactions. Usually, young women have difficulty with the violence, gore, and reality of War. You, on the other hand, understand that reality. You seem to accept that you can't apply today's social constructs to the world as it was. You appreciate the comradeship of these men and respect them. Thanks. To run toward the bullets takes a mind-set I have never experienced. But my Father did. He was there. In the Ardennes Forest. He was part of an anti-tank gun crew. They died. He didn't. See you again.

Episode 9 is the toughest episode not just of Band of Brothers but of pretty much any TV show ever made.
Winters called Spears because the publishers of the book were worried he would sue over the rumors about him being included in the book. Spears responded that it was all true and told Winters he would write him a letter saying it was all true and sign his name to it. Everyone was afraid of German soldiers at this point in history. We needed soldiers the Germans were afraid of.

This was only a Hollywood movie. We will never know nor truly understand what these men went through. They gave everything and came home and built the greatest civilization the world has ever known. They never called themselves victims. They never asked any one for anything. They fought for the freedoms that we not only take for grated but recklessly throw away today as we cower in fear of COVID 19 and other less than lethal threats to our nation. They were real American Heroes. We should thank God every day that men such as these lived and died for us.

A while back I said 6 and 7 were among the hardest. Walking with Eugene and seeing the toll is rough. This one even more because you feel helpless as they had to have. The scene in the church, with the familiar faces fading away. Knowing they aren't coming back. It hits home just how terrible war is.
      Yes, 9 is also hard.

Dyke was done wrong by the series and book among other men. He earned a Bronze Star, and was shot in the shoulder during Foy as he was in shock from having almost his entire arm blown off, it's a case of enlisted men in a close knit bubble not seeing the full picture. Just like Albert Blythe, they thought he died and yet he didn't die and went on to fight valiantly in WW2 and later served in Korea. Or Joe Leibgott, who they thought was Jewish, but he was Roman Catholic and spoke with a thick Brooklyn accent so they figured he was Jewish lol.
