  • Orquesta Akokán performing Pan Con Tibiri at The Hamilton Live on April 10, 2024.
Pan Con Tibiri is a classic "doble sentido" (double meaning) number, literally meaning "bread with anything". But this funky mambo-pilon belies a deeper meaning, a homage to the barrios of Havana, whose people who greet the hardness of their lives with grace and humor. Singer, Kiko Ruiz, imagines this as a playful song parents might sing to their children to distract them from their lack of dietary options.
Pilón was a popular dance based on the motions of pounding sugarcane. It originated in the Cuban town of the same name. The creation of Pilón is often attributed to bandleader and singer Pacho Alonso in collaboration with percussionist/composer Enrique Bonne.
Pan Con Tibiri, off the new album Caracoles, out on Daptone Records July 12th.
