  • The origin of the word "Druid" is unclear, but the most popular opinion is that it comes from "doire", an Irish-Gaelic word for oak (often a symbol of knowledge), which also means "wisdom".
Druidism can be described as a shamanic religion, as it is based on a combination of contact with the spirit world and holistic medications to treat (and sometimes cause) disease. They were said to induce insanity in people and to be accurate soothsayers. There is a great mystery that surrounds the true history of the druids, since our knowledge is based on limited records. Druidism is believed to have formed part of Celtic and Gaul culture in Europe, with the first classical reference to them in the 2nd century BC. C. Their practices were similar to those of today's priests, connecting people to the gods, but their role was also varied and broad, acting as teachers, scientists, judges, and philosophers.
