My my, you are a legend at explaining these things, i have watched, thousands of videos about mixingin headphones and all these tools, but no any single video made it really clear, sometimes they ignore telling the basics, and even if they do, they talk too much nnecessaty stuffs. Thanks a lot, I also check a TH-cam chanel called HEADPHONES where the person tested lots of headphones and recorded the profile of each can, compared to a audio file, then play back the audio from each headphones, and hundreds of headphones tested, I need someone like you to check and see if they are accurate.
But one of headphoe test, there was A shure srh 440a was the flatest or sound closest to the original source, and that got me thinking to buy that headphone, but then confused why most people use Sennheiser HD 600 and HD650.

Thanks for that, much appreciated. Some people hate my style haha. But then no one is forcing them to watch right...
About headphones, it is a minefield, a rabbit hole, a wide and varied subject. Trying to choose the right headphones can be tricky. Luckily with the advent of tools like Morphit / SoundID we get a bit of help with this now. Obviously, there are limits. It is no use using a pair of cheap gaming headphones... Or is it? Some people use earbuds as reference.
I think the 600/650 is decent idea for that price range for mixing. But they are open back so you can't use them for tracking... (Well, you can but you have to be careful). The thing with these models is they are broadly used.
Then you look at the next level like Audeze LCD-X which are 4-5 times the cost? Then we have to think about comfort. Honestly, there is no easy answer, unless you have chance to go to a store and physically try some.
Even myself I am never 100% happy, although I use my Beyer DT880 all the time and an old pair of Sen HD265 that I grew up with.
I think it might be time to do a new video on this.
      Cheers once again. P.

Hi John, thanks ever so much. I must admit since making this video my process has changed quite drastically. Although the principle is still similar, I now tend to use Sonarworks, Sound ID. This was mainly because of the added ability to use room correction (when not using headphones) and also the emulations of other systems. I still use Canopener though. Time for an updated video I think. 🙂

Yet another very informative video, Phil. Thanks for that :)
Regarding the routing of different (headphone) plugins for comparison I also use the Cubase control room feature but with multiple monitor busses defined. Perhaps you already have thought about that and decided it wasn't useful for your workflow? But in case you haven't here is what I have done.
In the audio connections control room setup, I defined four monitor busses which are all routed to the same physical device port. Normally you can't route multiple busses to the same phycial device port, but in Cubase Preferences you can disable the Cubase control room option 'Exclusive Assignment of Monitor Channels'. With this option disabled you can now assign the same physical output to multiple monitor busses in the control room. You just can't use them at the same time but that is not a problem in this case :)
In the control room you then have four separate monitor outputs available named A, B, C and D. And each monitor can contain its own plugins.
In my case I have defined the following:
    Plugins on Monitor output A
-Gain for two purposes: to make sure the headphones plugin is not clipped but at the same time make it possible to bypass the headphones plugin without a volume change (the latter would not be possible if I would set the volume in the headphones plugin itself)
    -Waves NX Ocean Way
    -Sonarworks with headphone correction profile
    Plugins on Monitor output B
    -Gain
    -Realphones
    -Sonarworks with headphone correction profile
    Plugins on Monitor output C
    -Gain
    -Sonarworks with headphone correction profile
    Plugins on Monitor output D
-Gain (to be able to volume match it with the other monitor channels)
    -Sonarworks with speaker correction profile
I can now do an easy, and quick!, A/B/C(/D) comparison by clicking on the appropriate monitor channel. The volumes are roughly matched so I can quickly hear the differences while using Waves NX (A) vs Realphones (B) vs neither one of them (C). I can also listen how it sounds on my speakers using D.
I find this method works very well and allows for fast A/B comparisons :)

Thanks. Yup this is exactly as I have it now for the last year or so. (My workflow has changed a bit since this video). Mon A: SonarWorks Mon B: SonarWorks with emulation of Mix Cubes Mon C: No Sonarworks and Stereo flipped. Monitor D: Untouched (for OBS streams).

    • @PhilPendlebury
      @PhilPendlebury  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi, I think the interface may have changed slightly since I made this video. But the top right area is simply the colour of the interface. So, you can choose a colour that suits your viewing. It does not affect the sound. To get "less correction" from Morphit you would adjust the "Morph" amount which is a percentage at the bottom right of the interface. Thanks for watching, much appreciated.

Another great video, Phil. And right up my alley. I already have Morphit which I use for my BeyerDynamic DT770 Pro 80 Ohm headphones and Waves NX ambience plugin. However, I didn't go with the head-tracker option and after listening to your video through headphones it seems like it might be a important part of the process of mixing in headphones. Unfortunately mixing, and tracking, in headphones is what I have to do much of the time. And hearing the difference between the NX and the Abbey Studio was really nice! It seems great to have to option of listening in 2 different environments.
So, I just ordered a Waves Headtracker and the Abbey Road Studio 3 plugin. They should pay you a commission! :-)

    • @PhilPendlebury

Why would you mess about like that when you can put them in Control Room? But I fear you missed my point(s):
      1. People sometimes think they should be there on render. Which of course is not the case.
      2. People forget to render though an alternative channel.
      3. People forget to disable when they are on Master Bus.
If you look around you'll see lots of folks who say things like "Abbey Road Studio sounds great but when I added it to my rendered mix it didn't sound as good". So the reason I hammered that home is to make those folks aware (even some very prolific YT reviewers get this wrong).

In Pro Tools (and other DAW's that do not have Cubase's Control Room flexibility) you can create a new bus for Headphones only and monitor from that. Here is a discussion about from Sonorworks: www.sonarworks.com/blog/learn/creative-routing-solutions/
