Surprised to hear 'I can see for miles' flopped. Loved it from the very first hearing. Still one of may favourite songs ever. Thanks for this chance to see Pete and his dad jamming. Wow!
I love this man. I wrote him a letter back in the late 1970's, and he answered me. I have a massive photo on my wall of him, which I've never seen anywhere else, and it's the greatest concert photo I've ever seen. I bought it as a poster in 1970. Above it is an autographed guitar from him. As I writer and a poet, he inspires me daily and that poster is in my direct view as I write. Thank you, Pete. You have touched the world.
Wish my dad would have done that just once in a while...he always froze rigid whenever I tried to give him a hug,as if I was radioactive or something.😔
This interview is absolutely brilliant. Pete was incredibly candid. These days, people are so guarded mostly because everything they say will be analyzed to death on social media platforms. Thanks for posting this. I have always loved The Who. To me, they are just behind Pink Floyd in terms of what appeals to my ear. Quadrophenia is a masterpiece. I put it ahead of Tommy.
Remember this interview back in the 80s,was quite surprised at his politeness and how candid he was on various personal subjects-loved the duet with Pete and his Father at the end, they should have done that more often
The most wonderful thing about TH-cam is being able to view materials, interviews, shows, etc from decades ago featuring your favorite artists(in this case Pete Townshend) that you didnt even know existed(because in this case it aired across the pond) and even if knowing of its existence had no way or hope of ever viewing.
Such a shame, he was a great host, all interviews seem more like friends talking, rather than the almost scripted rubbish that we get these days on TV chat shows.
43 and just got into The Who. Pete always struck me as someone that scoffs at anything "American", but the more I learn about him the more I admire him and his contributions to rock music.
Pete seems to have more of a focus on music rather than appearance which I heavily admire. He can focus and not get nervous on stage. I wish I could do that. I am also highly impressed with his guitar versatility. He can play blues if he wanted to.
Always weird when I go down a youtube rabbit hole ( In this case Pete Townshend interviews ) and you come across even more being uploaded continually, like this one uploaded hours ago. Loved watching Pete jamming with his dad here. Pete's playing was on point.
I never saw Pete in this light. Between playing his guitar like that, him and his dad on stage jamming, deep discussions about life and the music scene, it's amazing. I have a new respect for Pete after seeing this. The same goes for Roger Daltrey.
Bravo. 👏👏👏👏👏. Thanks so much for sharing. This is so much better than American talk shows. Always liked Pete. But when he knocked Abbie Hoffman up side the head at Woodstock, he became my hero.
I love Pete Townshend. Aside from his artistry, always a sharp dresser for one. For a guy who was not traditionally handsome at the time, I'm glad he didn't change anything in his face. He has beautiful blue eyes with dark hair, grey now, but he's made the most of what he's got. It's just an observation because more than ever now, people are extremely critical of looks and so many resort to plastic surgery to fit a mold. If Pete had fixed his nose, he would be kind of bland. I think he looks like an emperor.
13:12 mark was unique in that its an important issue one that unifies parents with their adult children. It shows how intently Petes Father is listening to his son and likely empathizing with his son’s experiences with drugs & drink as a musician. I truly Appreciate seeing this, thanks for sharing with us all. Cheers!!
Pete may sometimes come across as arrogant, sometimes outspoken but underneath, there's a big softie I think. It's just not obvious. Shelley winters is absolutely lovely in this. A lovely and genuine personality. She was incredibly beautiful when she was young.
Never once thought of him as arrogant, ever. Always seemed very sweet and proper. And funny. Maybe his humor is misunderstood as arrogance? Idk, Must just be the American way.
@@FunkyMonk_96 Like the other guy said, he’s not arrogant. He’s confident because a certified genius. To some people, that comes off as arrogance. It’s a thin line lol “I’m so great” can be arrogant or confident. The deciding factor is, are they actually so great? And yes Pete is! Edit: Also, I’m American so it’s not a regional way of thinking. It’s just how he comes off to some people. They see him talking himself up and think he’s arrogant. They don’t realize he’s a genuine genius.
1:25 "You are the only rock band to survive intact since the 60s. Why would that be, do you think?" What a question to open with, considering that Mr. Keith Moon died in 1978! I'm amazed Mr. Townshend didn't get angry at that.
Great to see this. The odd thing about I Can See for Miles is that Pete always says it sold bugger all. But actually it got to number 10 in the charts in the UK. which in those days meant pretty big sales. i wonder if he actually forgot that or what.
Haha, he wished a nr. 1 . Alice Cooper made a lot songs from that riff! Macca did Skelter after Pete announced he made the loudest song ever. 🥂( Empty glass again)
I thought Pete was exaggerating somewhat about 'I can see for miles' - it did very well in the charts. I think it was the fact that The Who had had a series of No2 hits, so No10 felt like a low showing!

This is great! Thank you for posting. I saw that Pete has put his London house up for sale. I read that the recording studio that he helped Ronnie Wood build has been dismantled...would have loved to have seen that in pics. Pete has excellent taste in architecture...it's an absolutely gorgeous home! I forget where Pete paid tribute to his dad by quoting him by saying, "it's good as long as it swings", or something like that. Pete really does look more like his mom though.
I used to pass that house in Richmond every day on the way to work,I always thought it strange that someone so famous as Ronnie Wood or Pete would want to live in a house where any obsessive fan could just step off the pavement onto his front doorstep and hassle him.
I asked Pete about this interview when he was active on Instagram. I liked it. He seemed embarrassed. Said he was very tired after touring & not happy with it. Viewing this again, he does seem a bit tired. But, I still think it’s great. Just can’t see anything wrong. Can you?
