    Thank You, Hollie! As I sat in a cafe next to an elderly couple, very much like those in your video, that glanced over their shoulders and whispered. I felt scorn and shame, as I breastfed my 2 month old baby. When they got up to leave, I hurried to move my stroller, they stopped me and said "don't disturb the baby, we can get out, she's really enjoying the feed, isn't she?". I felt embarrassed that they had not been talking of my shameful behaviour at all! I was proud to be seen to feed my baby in this cafe! I have been helped in buses as I fed my baby, I have been shown a seat in a department store in order to feed my baby. We Are Changing! WE ARE PROUD TO FEED

    I read this poem years ago before I fell pregnant and felt moved by it. Watching it now, a mum of a 22 month old still on the boob, I'm sobbing. I don't really know why. It resonates now I guess. Very powerful. Thanks Hollie x

    This brought me to tears. Still nursing my 1.5 year old and "embarrassed" is the perfect word to describe how I feel when he asks to nurse in public... when really, our society should be embarrassed for creating a stigma surrounding the most natural and healthy thing a mother can do.
    I'll never forget when my son was just a small baby and I breastfed him on a bench in the mall right outside Victoria's Secret -- for some reason, I was getting awful, judgemental stares but all of those people were completely comfortable with the VS advertisement just feet away from me.

    People tend to forget that to feed a child is the original purpose of the breast... not to feed lust of grown men. To breastfeed is a natural process and I am glad for every mom who breastfeeds her child! Your poem is so true. And it encourages many women, to go their way.

    The lovely poem! When I was nursing, I never had problems in public. In fact, one day, I was at the mall. I don't know why I was at the mall, but my husband had gone off to shop for something and I was sitting on a bench waiting for him and it was time to feed my baby. And the bench was long enough to hold three people, but you know only two people are going to sit at it. So I was on one end, and the teenage boy was on the other end, and I nursed my son... The boy never knew what was going on. Cracked me up!

    Thank you Hollie McNish! Another brilliant poem. This happens to women in the US, too, as I'm sure you know. The health benefits of breast-feeding to both the baby and mother are extraordinary. Thank you for being proactive on so many issues of social justice, your writing is superb!

    I'm seeing alot of butt hurt men in the comments; I thought the person who started his comment with 'try being a straight white man...' was starting a joke but it turns out there are so many people who, when is comes to empathy and understanding, are very poor indeed. If I had raised a boy who turned into a man like that I would be very ashamed of both him and I.

    • @hads5279
      @hads5279 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Uh, no. Because men shouldn't be raised to lack empathy and understanding, yet thrive on anger and aggression. Society runs on misogyny and the patriarchy. The world is built to benefit (straight, white) males. And when females stand up and speak up regarding oppressive issues, men suddenly become entitled, tantrum-throwing children who think that they are suddenly being oppressed. That is no way to raise a son. Yes, I would be ashamed.

    Good on you Hollie, speaking out for everyone. Brilliant poetry. I breastfed my children in public nearly 40 years ago. Astonishingly nothing has changed in all that time!! It makes you want to cry for the sheer ignorant stupidity of it. And as you say, so much has to do with making money. Good luck darling, the world needs people like you so so badly.

      Is that Hollie's video or these idiot misogynistic trolls who are perverted and depraved? If you can't cope with normal bodily functions, of far greater benefit to the baby than any market-driven bottle formula, you should go back to kindergarten and not reemerge until you're actually adult.

      My comment was meant to be in reply to Alice Rabbit, who may or may not be ironic. She's clearly not a rabbit and may not be Alice. The idea that another woman can call breastfeeding perverted etc is deeply depressing.

    what's really sad is that it's so true but there is also bottle feeding shame and mothers staying home because of the faff of taking it all with you and then sit there feeling ashamed with looks because you are giving them powdered milk and obviously don't love your kids enough to give them what's best.
    so there is feeding shame either way. both could leave mothers stuck indoors feeling more and more alone...

    • @hads5279
      @hads5279 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      What I love about this poem is she didn't shame formula feeding, but pointed out that a woman who prefers breastfeeding shouldn't be so harshly judged and shamed to the point where she switches to bottled to avoid it. I also love that she pointed out the issue with formula feeding in areas where water is heavily polluted and kills people.
      I've definitely seen holier than thou mothers shame formula feeding mothers. One of my friends couldn't breast feed because her son was born with a tongue tie, and a mum in a message board was so rude and judgmental that my friend was crying and calling herself a horrible mother. Made me sick. I am glad there is another option for feeding our babies.

    • @suzifaye
      @suzifaye 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People can be so judgemental. People shouldn't judge but should accept others' choices. I tried so hard to breastfeed when my child was born for 3 months but I didn't have enough milk and trying to express it took an hour to get a small amount. In the end I gave up. But still I was judged sometimes by people who knew nothing about me. Live and let live!

    Love love love this! Particularly timely to see it when there has recently been an incident where gendarmes in Paris refused (very aggressively) to let a woman breastfeed in the police station when she was queuing to organise a proxy for the election (there has since been an apology from on high - after a petition - and confirmation of the right to breastfeed in public) - those officers probably had something in common with some of the seriously disturbed people commenting on here! The disconnect between omnipresent soft porn and discomfort/outrage at women breastfeeding is terrible, bravo Hollie for highlighting it! I breastfed my boys till the ages of 4 and 2 and a half, and was lucky enough to be in a rural environment where negative reactions were minimal...
