Years and years ago I had a book that discussed colors, color contrast, sharpness or softness of features (eyes, mouth, etc.), also fullness of features such as small eyes or full lips. It also had tiny cutout color chips to match to your eyes, skin, and hair. Then it talked about all over proportions and angularity and softness. It also discussed hair and skin texture. The overall idea was to understand what harmonize with your personal appearance, what would be fun contrasts, and why somethings were just meh. I wish I had that book now. So I’m really glad that you’re covering these topics. Thank you. 😊
I tend to be drawn to black and white prints. No surprise there, since I'm a Winter. I love them because they're so versatile and easily combine with pops of color. I also love polka dots, especially navy and white. And I do love fun florals. I'm a writer and creative type, so bold prints don't scare me. As I'm getting older, I'm also getting freer with my willingness to stand out. And, although I have plenty of basic shoe styles, I don't at all mind a funky print on shoes. I just got a new pair of floral/bird themed Cariuma tennis shoes I've been having fun with. (But I'm in Florida, so it fits.) Great video, Sarah! Can't wait to see that embroidered wool coat. Looks like a fun wardrobe addition.
This information was really interesting and helpful. I've always been drawn to animal prints and almost impressionistic/watercolor types of prints--although I love some geometics as well. And although a have 1 pair of pants in a geometic pattern I love and in colors I love, I rarely wear them. I guess I've always felt that I don't want to draw attention to the lower half of my body!
Great video Sarah! Thank you so much🙏😍 It may be that I have a split personality since my favorite prints are 1: Abstract organic shapes like clouds or marble, 2: Oriental flower prints like cherry blossoms. The Oriental prints leave a lot of background colour and so give a more calm impression than many other flower prints, 3: Missoni chevron pattern - I go weak every time and do have a few items from them😅 It seems like there's no common thread here, my taste is just all over the place. Anyway, I do prefer to wear glitter knit and sequins in solid colours😁🥰
Thank you ☺️ that’s the joy of personal style! Sometimes there is no explanation for it. I think as long as you know what you’re drawn to without outside influences, you’re on to a good thing!
Your coat looks stunning 😍, Sarah! Great advice- I'm a busty inverted triangle, and horizontal striped tops have never looked right on me 😂, which is a shame, as I love them xxx🥰
I’m the opposite - I’m a pear, and a Bright Spring. One of the best-looking tops on me I own has big wide cream and red stripes. But I love all the summer palette watercolour patterns that do nothing for me. LOL 🥲 xx
I'm 5'4" but not petite in frame, plus I'm a creative type. I'm an Autumn, drawn to medium to large patterns inspired by nature: leaves, florals, leopard. But I also like paisley, stripes, plaid, if they're in my palette. I thought your video was very cogent and a good reminder for those of us who are wondering about what prints work for us.
Depends on the print. Outside of graphic and band tees I’d say small to medium sized prints. I like the animal prints in the autumn palette. Paisley is a little too busy for my tastes. Small to medium polka dots are awesome as well. Small to medium stripes in either direction is good. Can pull off flannel but it’s not really my thing. That’s as big as I get for stripes. Since I’m a tall and slim hourglass I also avoid too much going on at the stomach. My favorite print so far is a peach printed dress that’s very flowy and has a defined waist.
I'm an Autumn, soft gamine body shape, 5 ft 1 and fit. I love small geometrics, polka dots and little paisleys. Vertical stripes if they're small and in various colors are fun, too.
I'm 5ft2, overweight, Autumn, and medium-to-high contrast. I love florals, arabesque patterns, leaves, paisley. I like medium-to-slightly large prints (well, medium to large for my frame); too large or too small do nothing for me. I don't do geometric prints (unless it's a repeating snowflake pattern, or like a crochet skirt I adore), and I have very few stripes (usually very subtle, tone-on-tone). I had a couple of leopard pieces when I was younger, and then realized I was more flora than fauna 😊
In terms of prints, I favour small polkadots or tiny florals because I’m petite, soft classic. Also, the print must follow my wardrobe colour palette as a true winter. Love your channel and your wisdom!
Great advice Sarah, Love your coat stunning with the bright pink collar!!..I am drawn to small floral prints but I am very careful not to do too much of that..I am finding as I am getting older monochromatic is better for me!!!..I am a winter person but I have to be careful with too high contrast!!...Sarah thank you for answering me too!!! I was so excited that you did, over here in Australia we are so far away and its nice to be acknowledged!!!!....Have you been to Adelaide ? thats my city!!!!...anyway look forward to your next video....from Margaret xo
72. Medium height. Athletic build. Deep Winter. Silver hair. My clothing is almost exclusively solid color. Since Winters can wear so much color, I have not been so attracted to prints. But I have looked good in polka dots and I always have one blue and white striped shirt. Medium sized prints work best on me. Stripes and polka dots are classics and classic with an edge or leaning boho is my style. When I make clothing, I prefer prints because they are more interesting to make. I can also put together different prints for interest. The quilts I have made have all been batik prints.
I think the larger floral prints seem to have gone out of fashion in dresses anyway and the smaller prints have taken over. It’s good to be aware of the difference prints can make to our body shape and colouring.
GREAT VIDEO!!! Just one comment about the high contrast on your jacket. I am also a winter just like your coloring, and need contrast in my garments. I sew garment, and one thing I try to include with prints is a different color contrast, as in your pink collar, and that stops the eye from wondering all over the print.
I am petite and medium boned so I keep my prints to small/medium in scale and as a warm spring with medium contrast I try to match the medium in contrast of the print.
I'm attracted to small soft florals... As a cool winter. Sigh. I need to fall for some larger scale saturated floral a out there! They must exist. Surely!
I'm very careful with vertical stripes. I have a fairly large chest and rounded hips, so vertical lines tend to distort following the rounder parts of my body in certain fabrics. That effect, I find, draws unwanted attention to my chest and hips and I feel too exposed. Horizontal lines however, hold their straight shape, so I like them better because they hide curves. I rather look a bit wider than rounder. Does that make sense or is it just in my head?
I'm drown to small or medium polka dots, funfettis, diagonal candy cane stripes, birds prints or any paisley/small floral/shapes with deep backgrounds (black, navy, burgundy). Value contrast is important for my colouring but not the most intense. I have to soften it a little bit. The scale of the print matters a lot for me (I'm petite). Too small Liberty and I look like a 5-year-old, losing my adulthood 😂
I love abstract patterns. I sew, and have made many mistakes with patterns . I realize now I need low or medium contrast patterns. Ditsy patterns and high contrast patterns don’t work for me at all.
Thank you so much for your awesome advice. How do you decide if a print will work for you when it is multicolored and there are colors from several palettes in it?

Sounds like a great book. I do think it’s missing the human element however eg our thoughts and feelings which is just as important ☺️💕

I am a Winter, high contrast, just like you. Love your videos. Just got a black and white striped scarf.
Hello fellow Winter! That scarf sounds perfect ☺️💕
A favorite scarf I have is a black with white polka dots. It's definitely a signature for me ❤

Thank you. My favorite prints are low contrast, stripes, leopard, botanical inspired. For reasons unknown, I have never liked polka dots.
Thanks for sharing!! ☺️💕

Sounds like you’ve got a great understanding of your style Susie ☺️💕
Love your black and white jacket. You made that? The pink collar is amazing with it.
Thank you so much! Yes I made it a couple of weeks ago :)

Hi Sarah, love this video. I am only 4'11 so am so aware of what patterns look like on me. When I wear prints, they are very tiny prints.
Thank you! Sounds like you know your prints ☺️💕

Love to hear that you sew Helena! I love prints for sewing because they hide a multitude 😉

I totally agree 💯☺️
Small / simple patterns, watercolour

GREAT VIDEO!!! Just one comment about the high contrast on your jacket. I am also a winter just like your coloring, and need contrast in my garments. I'm attracted to small soft florals... As a cool winter. Sigh. I need to fall for some larger scale saturated floral a out there! They must exist. Surely!
They’re out there Nicole! ☺️💕
I am always drawn to a blurry floral print 🙂
Interesting. Low contrast in that case ☺️💕
I'm very careful with vertical stripes. I have a fairly large chest and rounded hips, so vertical lines tend to distort following the rounder parts of my body in certain fabrics.

Does that make sense or is it just in my head?
It absolutely makes sense! Our bodies and style are wonderfully unique. That is why we cannot follow style 'rules' blindly :)
@sarahryanthestylecoach Thanks! I like that a lot about you: you always sugggest and explain, but never give a set off rules to follow blindly
I’m only drawn to floral prints like rococo styles 😅 I want to try stripes but it doesn’t suit my style personality for some reason 😊
Yes I think stripes might appeal to a classic whereas florals might appeal to a romantic ☺️💕

Nice! The mistakes can get expensive! Glad you know your prints ☺️💕
Thank you so much for your awesome advice.
How do you decide if a print will work for you when it is multicolored and there are colors from several palettes in it?
I like vertical stripes, animal print. I don’t look good in high contrast print. I don’t like floral.
Love this! ☺️💕
Polka dots
