  • This is a walkaround video of my1996 Land Rover Discovery V8, with custom bumpers, 2" lift and 265/75r16 BFG mud tires. I spent a lot of time rebuilding this rig and this is the culmination of that work.

    Man... I really wish my Disco (a '99 D1 SE) was white. They look fantastic in white. Mine's green, and I feel like every one you ever see on the road is green. Ha! Beautiful truck!

    Just came across this...
    When I was 16, out on a farm in Kinloss, Scotland, I got a rusted old '97 Disco V8, SE, cream leather interior LPG conversion. 300quid it was never getting on the road again. But for the year I yobbed this thing about on all the farm tracks no license at all. Cut the exhaust off and Jesus what a noise. Since then I have been besotted with the Disco, and I swear I will own ine again some day. Love watching other vids about these things. New sub from me.

    Dang, that lift really changed the perspective. When we had 265's on ours, they looked a heck of a lot wider. I actually thought these were 245's or 235's when I first saw it. Great lookin' D1!

      Haha yeah it looks like it's on stilts a little bit. Funny though when I raise it on the lift it actually looks better taller, but then I'd want bigger tires... its a bad cycle

    Nice Disco with useful and inexpensive mods. I have a barn find 98 that was sitting for 8 years when I found it. It took a lot of work, but it's back on the road and it was worth it all. Good luck with yours, cheers!

    Sweet rig. I really like what you did with the front bumper. I took the factory plastic one off of my ‘97 to fix the cracks, and also to see if I preferred it with just the metal bar. Honestly, I prefer to leave it on because it holds the side lights, and I like having the bottom height of my rover even all the way around lol

    Thanks for the content brother. I've got a white gen 1 Disco of my own. Unfortunately it's in storage jail. Been about 5-6 years. Got a backup car which was cheaper than the repairs and I've just been hit with $3,5,7+ hundred repairs ever since. I've had to get a backup car for my backup car. Been rough. Just waiting for a sponsor to pay me to get my ole Rover back in the game. Thanks for the content. Car gremlins are killing me. Nice to know someone's taking the time to put some life back into their Rover.

      The gremlins on these things are brutal. These cars are desirable because of what they stand for, what what they're built of lol. Hope you get to bring yours back to life as well, might be best to start converting over to domestic parts and engine swap it at that point. Good luck!

    Thanks for making this video, I'm humming and hawing about buying a 1997 and your video sure explains alot to a newb who wants to buy one. I drive a Tacoma right now, which is well suited for off road also. P.S. Fellow Ontarian.

    It may help you to understand the rear suspension radius arms and how they function.. The rear wheels are traveling in an arc. they are not going straight up during compression they travel up and to the rear of the vehicle. and When they travel down as the spring lengthens, the axle/wheel travels towards the front of the vehicle. An interesting tidbit is that when one wheel is compressed all the way and the other wheel on the other side of the axle is extended all the way, it will appear that the rear end is steering. This must be taken into account when wondering why you had to cut more than you thought from the rear wheel well. You notice this effect a lot more as the tire size gets larger. I swear this action, which is on both ends, makes it better offroad as the tire to surface contact is more dynamic as its tread to surface angle is changing at the same rate the more severe the terrain gets.. A simpler way to think of it is, your discovery wheel base length changes when the vehicle experiences any up and down action from the terrain where one wheel is at a different height on one side of the axle than the other side. When you lifted it you made the wheel base shorter as well. So now when it compresses the rear axle will move back at an increased rate as you are traveling in an arc. There was enough room for this rearward movement at the factory ride height/tire size because the radius arms were closer to the center of their traveling arc. You already have evidence of this ratio, because you needed only a one inch spacer for the sway bars, but you added a 2 inch lift.. sorry, I couldnt help it....take care john 94 RRC LWB

      I actually got the lift after I finished the project... Everything I did, including pulling all the suspension out 4 times and doing all the brake lines I did on my back. But it does make it easier!

    Not going to lie, your build has been an inspiration to me building my Disco over last 6 months!! I've since put on Caster Corrected Arms Front and rear with all new TF bushings and WOW did that ever help the freeway death wobble. Not that I wobbled but it was scary to drive at even 60 mph. Anyhow I Highly recommend these arms if you freeway your Disco at all! Does make for Much tighter clearance on the front drive shaft as arms Rotate the axles 3 deg. It also helped driveline vibration a bit as it lines up the pinons closer to the T-case. Anyhow yet again Thanks for the video! What else have you done to her?!?!

      @@WeekendWarriors87 Yeah I understand completely. Mine is a 10-12mpg gas pig, and taking more money away from me than my EX did. Had mine for 15 years now and been pretty reliable until I started driving it more lately. Lack of power to tow is my biggest issue, along with mpg but otherwise I'll keep my Disco running for a long time! I like to offroad her pretty hard and this ALL started getting a great deal of lift springs, down the rabibt hole I went.. Again many thanks for everything, posting the video, and all the help along the way!

    Just wondering what mechanical/fabrication history you’ve got, it’s amazing all the custom work you have done. Do you think you’d add fender flares?

      Yessir the exhaust definitely pops, it sounds even better in person! And absolutely no experience, learned from the internet and doing this project. I debated on flares, I would love to add wheel spacers to improve my turning radius which would require trimming the fenders and adding flares, but I haven't decided yet fully. If I was going that route, I would also feel the need for larger tires... which I definitely dont want to shell out for yet!

    Great video thanks for that, love that v8 burble. With regards to the bonnet/hood did you take it from a 200 tdi. Possibly explain the slight differences. Also did you install castor correction radius and trailing arms with the 2" lift?

      The hood was from another v8, the diesels are very uncommon in canada. And no I didn't use castor corrected arms, I think they might be beneficial, but I don't notice any issue and no drive ability problems, drives like I expect a 25 year old solid axle truck to drive!

    Love the exhaust setup. Need to do something similar on my 97 Disco. Would you happen to have a part number for the magnaflow muffler and hanger you installed?

      No sorry, I welded it custom. But its a 14" long oval magnaflow so just get the inlet size you need and youll be all set.

    Can I ask.. do you think you could just get away with the 2" lifted springs and shocks alone without other mods? Or would I definitely need longer break lines and what else? Thanks :)

      Only if you never leave the street. Brake lines aren't something I'd risk personally...

    Awesome Rig man, Just wanted to grab some tips from you in regards to maintaining the Disco?
    I just bought one the other day and just replaced the head gaskets and did the skimming and pressure tests as well what else could you think would be a great idea to take a look at?

      there was a great article on the landroverforums which showed a list of what to check/maintain, that would be a great place to start. Depending what shape its in, think about safety first and then mechanicals. Inspect all brake components, steering bars/ball joints, bushings, etc. Then do all fluids and mechanicals. Check over the rubber donut in your driveshaft too!

    I put a two inch lift on my '95 D1 but I ended up with about 4 inches. Most guys will never complain of having a couple extra inches, but now I have a vibration when I let of the gas pedal. Still trying to figure it out before something grenades. Other than that, my truck looks great. I've owned it for 15 years and am just starting to add upgrades and fixing things I have neglected over the years.

      Was is an HD lift? 4" IMO is too high, have you cycled the suspension to see if anything hits? That thing has got to be pretty scary to drive, I cant imagine what the radius arm angles look like at 4" lift.

      @@WeekendWarriors87 Actually, it drives just fine. Haven't cycled the suspension to see what might hit, but is in the plans. I am looking into new radius arms front and arched and extended ones for the back. Maybe it's closer to 3 inches.

      @@westernwanderer8397 Thats great that it drives well! although I would definitely do some cycling and make sure. on the extended radius rods/rear arms, you can actually make new brackets to drop down the mounting location on the frame if you are handy at welding, would be a whole lot cheaper than aftermarket stuff

      @@WeekendWarriors87 or you can get adjustable rear radius arms and get you pinion angle correct, and use a prop shaft spacer to get the drive shaft back to its proper length. many things to think about when lifting a rover. 2 ich is best if you still want it to drive safely on the freeway..

    Did they put the coils on the right sides due to one side being a bit higher depending on what side the driver sits?

      I tried swapping them to no avail. I think it sat crooked because it has been in an accident, as many of the panels on that same side do not line up and neither did the bumpers. I believe the frame may have been tweaked slightly.

      I just used crtuchfield to decide, I just chose the cheapest one but you could certainly choose nicer. Pretty sure any single DIN will work

      "Best" is relative, from factory these are way too low with too little clearance for actual use. To lift correctly there's lots involved. Thanks for watching

    Thanks for the Video man! Got a white 96 disco 2" lift 265/75r16 KO2's. Did a fair bit of trimming in the past, so far so good! Except the rear Swaybar flipping up on me. Any chance you got measurements of the fronts? How much rearword you went? Also, have you not lost the rear springs, or needed cones?! I've put hose clamps on the top of the rear springs, better than nothing right?!

      Sorry im not sure what you mean for measurements up front, how much I trimmed? also, I have had issues flexing out the rear springs, I dont have cones, I think I am going to either get cones or use limit straps. I dont think hose clamps will save you up front, the axle is heavy, I dont have issues with the front because the HD springs from the PO do not flex well up front (I dont have a heavy bumper so I needed medium duty springs).

      @@WeekendWarriors87 Thanks for the reply! I was wondering how much you moved the front sway bar to the rear. Looks like you might have re-used 1 of the holes? Also any part number for the disconnects, or did you Fab those out of bolts? I've never had issues popping springs on the front, only added the hose clamps to the rear springs as a failsafe. Cones or straps are next in line for me as well. Again thanks man, any help on measurements on moving swaybars will be of great help! Something I NEED to do wth +2" TF Med with +50mm longer shockers..

      @@Kris-jk9mq Yeah no problem, Ill try to grab a measurement tomorrow for you. I think its about 2" I moved them back and like an inch down, but ill check. Disconnects I used a bolt that I drilled a cross hole in and use a tractor pin to hold it on, otherwise I used the hardware from the sway bar. Its a shame the rear springs arent long enough, Im not a suspension expert but I dont see why this isa problem rovers have but jeeps dont, they just have longer springs instead of stiff short springs.

      @@WeekendWarriors87 Yeah I've had the rear swaybar shackles flip up and onto the springs a few times already after lifting it. Got new bushings to help but clearly i need to move the rear bar down as well like you did. While your measuring, rear was 1" down correct? Also guessing once the rear bar get disconnected THAT is when they spings pop out. I havent had an issue yet, but i chose my best 2 hose clamps per a spring on the rear. Stong little fellows, or bar is my real limit. Again, MANY thanks for your time in measuring and repling!!

      @@Kris-jk9mq Front is 2" back, 1 " down, rear is just 1" down. That kept the sway bar from contacting anything while cycling the suspension to the bump stops. Good luck!

      Nope, it came with a 2" kit when I bought it! If I were to do it again I probably would do a 2" lift and a 1" body lift and 33s. careful on a 3", I had lots of angles and stuff and as I mentioned in the video my sway bar contacted the front driveshaft, all that stuff will be worse on a 3". Most guys on the forums/internet dont actually crawl under it and fflex it out to make sure everything works well

      @@bysadebysade9666 Some say 3" is fine, but I think 2 is a good spot on these. Mine cruises the highway great, youd never even know that the angles were affected. Good luck on your build!

      on that vehicle a 2 inch is perfect unless you want to deal with all the parts and angles effected by a bigger lift. castor corrected swivel balls or corrected radius arms, the now totaly incorrect front drive shaft angle and pinion angles.. I needed double cardon joints to get the perfect driveshaft angle. When the front shaft breaks while at speed on the freeway, you will need a tow truck, as some stuff will seriously get hammered.

      Down near Windsor, and that's awesome! I love V8s but I think the diesel would have more character, especially a 5 speed.

    Nice build 👌 I have the same one but I can't get it to run 😢 anyone with knowledge on the security system ? I'd appreciate it. I'm getting a code p1621 serial data link dead fault

      I think the land rover forums would be a great place to start. Pre 95s can easily have their security system removed, after 96 its a bit more difficult. Good luck!

      You can get new doors seals easily here in South Africa. You should be able to get them from England too.

      @@AapVanDieKaap Definitely is a shame, I would have much preferred a manual. And new door seals are available, but they cost as much as the car did, so I will be leaving them as is for now
